1 Upper Hutt Business & Professional Women NEWSLETTER August 2016 Message from our President As I write this report it is snowing on the Rimutakas and the hills behind home are covered in snow. It s freezing but I hope you are all keeping warm and enjoying time with your family. We are only half way through Winter and I have daffodils out in the garden already. Many of the Club s members are away or about to depart on trips overseas. I wish you all safe travels and great weather. Over the July school break I drove up to Gisborne and around the East Cape to Whakatane, dropping down to Taupo before heading home. It was a wonderful trip, the scenery was fantastic and the people I spoke with were very hospitable and welcoming. It has been a wonderful experience to welcome so many new members to Upper Hutt over the past few months. Please take time to get to know these ladies it was wonderful to hear from Elaine Pram and Sharon Burton at our May meeting. It is only two weeks now until the Southern Regional Conference being held in Lower Hutt. I hope most of you are going to attend as it is a great chance to meet the new Federation Executive in person in a relaxed setting. The dinner on Saturday night promises to be a lot of fun with a games theme seeing that the Olympics start this weekend. Please keep 26 October free and start organising teams now for our Quiz Evening and in November we will be doing another Sileni wine fundraiser to raise funds for the school stationery project which, funds permitting, we hope to extend from three to five schools in Upper Hutt. Tell your friends and family about it now so that hopefully when the time comes we will get more orders than last year. I hope you have enjoyed hearing from our guest speakers over the past few months. Remember, if you have any subjects you would like to learn about, let me know so we can find speakers for the future. She spoke of how she and her family had settled into New Zealand life in Upper Hutt. Camila has fitted into her new life very well and enjoys her school life and participating in sport. She is hoping to take up a career as a mechanic and fix motor bikes and has spent time with Angela s husband Max in his shop learning the tricks of the trade. Her parents have found it harder to settle and to learn the English langue. 4 Our fundraising towards a study grant has been completed. Article in our local paper the Upper Hutt Leader and also in the Hutt News July Upper Hutt resident Tara Quinney has had her continuing studies made that much easier. A teacher at St Bernard s College, Quinney was presented with a $1000 scholarship from the Upper Hutt Business and Professional Women s Club at a function last month. Fashion parades were held to raise funds for the scholarship which was advertised and then interviews carried out president Sally Kean said. The women were all outstanding candidates in the chosen career paths, However, Tara stood out in her interview and with her passion for her carer and future aspiration. Quinney, a director of Religious Studies at St Bernard's in Lower Hutt, intends to put the money towards study for a Masters in Education Leadership and Management at the Unitec Institute of Technology. I have been studying part time for my Masters 1 for two years and the fees are so expensive at $1800 a paper, she said. Having only finished paying off my student loan last year for degrees in Social Work and History that I completed over 10 years ago another loan is just not an option. This has helped me so much in being able to pay part of one more papers before embarking on my thesis, getting me just that one step closer to completion. Quinney said. My dream is to be a high school principal and with this study I know I will eventually get there. Quinney was unaware of the local BPW before learning about the scholarship. I have now joined as I also would love to be part of a place that values and supports the betterment of women in society. Upper Hutt BPW NZ Newsletter August
