Hostesses for the meeting will be Karen Caldwell, Anne Lamb and Jalynn McDonald. Please RSVP to your Social Committee contact person so that the Culinary Arts students will have an accurate count from which to plan. Kathryn Parker will give the invocation and Jessica Hamilton will present the devotion. The coordinators are Kathryn Waters and members of the Social Committee and Jessica Hamilton and Linda Truitt who lead the Educational Excellence Committee. Very special guests will be our presenter, Dr. June Atkinson, N.C. Superintendent of Public Instruction and DKG member and Eta State President, Patricia Taylor. Come out for good company, good food and an informative morning. Mission Statement The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Spirited Temple Teens entertained with a variety of vocal and instrumental music. (December meeting with Gamma Sigma) Promotes professional and personal growth Of women educators and excellence in education.

2 Delta Rho News Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Delta Rho Chapter/Sanford, NC/Region VI Volume 10 Issue 3 January/ February, 2014 President s Message The death of Mary Latham Foster Waters on New Year s Day has left a void in our chapter. Mary loved DKG dearly and, even in her absence, still rallies us with the familiar charge, Onward, tis our sisters need us! Mary was the sister of Emily Lucas and aunt of Catherine Crook, both Delta Rho members. Likewise, we mournfully acknowledge the death of Mr. Ebenezer Sam Adams, Kathryn Parker s father who passed away in December and Karen Kershner s father, Col. (Ret.) Clark L. Kershner, who passed January 3. We offer our condolences to these Delta Rho sisters and their families. December s joint meeting/bazaar with Gamma Sigma was another great success. Thank you for your hard work, donations and purchases. I also applaud Gamma Sigma s Jane McPhaul for securing such a grand facility for us and on short notice at that! It was wonderful to have valet parking, too - especially since it was a rainy day. Thank you, too, for your financial support of the DKG objectives through your donations to Coins for Causes. Following the Feb 1 chapter meeting, the next big event on tap is our annual Beginning Life with Books Spelling Bee. No doubt, the teams are already practicing and after last year s big upset (new champions!), I m sure it will be on and popping! at this year s Bee. Begin now thinking about what you will prepare for the foods table and plan to bring lots! The crowd seems to grow larger each year. This year, the Eta State Convention will be in Greenville. You really develop a brand new appreciation for DKG when you attend this annual meeting. In her recent New Year s message to members, Eta State President Pat Taylor lists the top ten reasons Eta State members will want to celebrate 2014 and they re all about the Eta State Convention. This year marks Eta State s eightieth birthday which the Convention will celebrate in grand style. Hope you ll put the Eta State Convention on your calendar even if you can only stay one day. 3 Delta Rho News Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Delta Rho Chapter/Sanford, NC/Region VI Volume 10 Issue 3 January/ February, 2014 Tribute to Mary Waters Delta Rho Chapter remembers Mary Latham Foster Waters as an outstanding educator, avid Delta Kappa Gamma member and servant of mankind. As an art teacher, Mary touched the lives of countless children before retiring from Lee County Schools. She was involved in several community art programs including the Lee County Arts Council. Mary s artistic talents were evident in her numerous artistic works and crafts, often treasured gifts and keepsakes to family and friends. DKG was at the core of Mary Latham s very being and she gave her best to the organization. When she was no longer able to attend chapter meetings, Delta Kappa Gamma was still in her heart and thoughts. Her husband, Don Waters, said Mary thought she would be able to attend the joint December meeting of Delta Rho and Gamma Sigma. She had made several items for the bazaar and wanted to make sure the items got there. However, it was about this time that Mary began experiencing many complications and soon after lost her battle to her illness. On January 1, 2014, Mary passed away at Duke University Hospital. Mary was a past president and vice-president of Delta Rho Chapter, served on various committees within the chapter throughout her long term membership, and was chair of the Scholarship Committee at the time of her death. Box 245, Lillington NC Member News Congratulations to Wendy Bryant- Motley -- National Board certified In Early Childhood/Middle School Art. Wendy is the only Art teacher in Lee County to be National Board certified. Congratulations to Beth Hart Two daughters and sons-inlaw started a North Carolina based charity, DreamOn3, that focuses on children with serious health problems. 5 Volume 10, Issue 3 Delta Rho Committees page 5 Social Committee Read All About It Thanks to all of you who so promptly respond with a YES/NO when your social committee contact person s or telephones you, asking for your intent to attend an upcoming Delta Rho meeting!!! For each catered meal, the social committee has a deadline to give the caterer confirming the number of persons to be served. We need a correct headcount for each meeting by being mindful of being good stewards of our chapter resources. Next Meeting: February 1, 2014; Saturday, 9:00 AM; First Calvary Baptist Church. Kathryn Waters, Chair Educational Excellence Committee Updates Info from the EEC: At the February meeting, each member will be given baskets to use for our Beginning Teacher Support activity (school supplies) to bring back to the April meeting. The following committee chairs should complete the Biennial reports and send to the appropriate Eta State committee chair by February 1, 2014: President. Necrology, Communications & Publicity, finance, Membership, Educational Excellence, Scholarship, and World Fellowship. The reports can be found on the DKG website under forms. Our February meeting will have Dr. June Atkinson as our speaker. Also, Eta State President Pat Taylor will also be a special guest. Make sure you attend this meeting. Linda Truitt, Co - Chair Literacy Committee Project Fundraising Beginning Life With Books Spelling Bee Things are well underway for the 15 th Annual Beginning Life With Books Spelling Bee on MondayMarc24. The Civic Center is reserved with the necessary deposit. As usual, First Calvary Baptist Church sent in their registration fee at the end of December. The Tramway spellers have paid for two teams and made a down payment on the third. We will, of course, count on our regular line up of teams to take part. Continued on page 5

Now s the time for you to round up a new team, to gather a group representing a missing piece of the Sanford population. How about a neighborhood team? A book club? A zumba class? Surprise us! There s plenty of time to think about the roll you d like to play in the bee and the food you ll provide, but be absolutely sure you have the right date reserved: Monday, March 24. The Project Fundraising Committee was in charge of the successful bazaar that raised funds to support our Recruitment Grant. In the spring we will be able to give a $ grant for post - secondary education to a young lady graduating from a high school in Lee County. Thank-you Delta Rho and Gamma Sigma members for bringing lots of great items for shopping. Beth Hart, Chair First Year teacher Mallory Nickel s Lee Early College Earth and Environental Science Class was featured in the Sanford Herald A3 Sunday, January 19, The students had completed a study of the importance of sustaining the environment. At the end of the study, they had a sustainability fair featuring their projects.

7 Eta State News page 7 President Pat s Message The Power of One Recently, I have been thinking about the positive difference that one person can make in another person s life. President Patricia Taylor s message this month deals with the many ways that one person can make a difference. She cites several examples she s learned first- hand about the ways many individual Delta Kappa Gamma members are helping another or providing leadership. She echoes the words of International President Dr. Beverly Helms ---- it s the power of one! President Pat emphasizes that one person can make a difference and encourages each of us to share our power of one and spread the good news that in Delta Kappa Gamma, we are learning from each other and supporting each other every day. Read President Pat s complete message on the Eta State website at DKG Membership By: Rhonda Carter, Beta Theta President Eta State Membership Committee Member Many chapters are dealing with the issues of how to retain chapter members and how to keep them involved. I would like to emphasize some of the points in the article The Power of One written by International President Dr. Beverly Helms. Dr. Helms quoted Edward Everett Hale as saying, I am only one, but I am me. I cannot do everything, but I can do something and I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can. This quote really hit home with me. In today s busy world, people of all ages and especially women, often feel that they just don t have enough time to get everything done. According to Mr. hale, we have to accept the fact that we can t do it all, but we can do something. This is also true with Delta Kappa Gamma. Our members are involved in family, career, church and community. They give of themselves in so many ways. This is why they were recognized by other Delta Kappa Gamma sisters as being outstanding women educators and were invited to join our society. With the demands placed on us from all directions, we may often feel guilty when we are not able to attend every chapter meeting or participate in every chapter activity. Sometimes this guilt leads members to resign from their chapter. But, as Edward Hale said,.i will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. So..Attend a meeting. Send a card to a fellow sister. We can have a positive impact through the Power of One

8 Delta Kappa Gamma International page 8 World Fellowship World Fellowship began in 1946 as a project to aid women in war torn countries. To date 858 women from over 117 countries have received fellowships to enable them to pursue advanced study in the United States and Canada. Currently there are 33 fellows. Go to Delta Kappa Gamma website Fellowship to see the women, their countries and their areas of study. World Arts and Humanities There is a new thing coming DKG Gallery of Fine Arts. The last date for submitting work for this cycle is February 1. There s time to submit your entry. Go to for more information and entry form.
