1 DEAF LINE SEPTEMBER, 2014 LIHEAP Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program The LIHEAP/PIPP Program for senior citizens and people with disabilities starts in September for income eligible individuals. Both programs are administered by CEDA and provide assistance for gas and electric bills. Before you call for an appointment, please check that you have all the following documents listed below. You will not be able to apply if you do not have the correct documents. **Note: LIHEAP payments are made directly to the utility companies. Documents Required: Original Social Security cards for all household members Proof of all household income within 30 days from application date: SSA, SSI, SSDI, wages, unemployment, cash assistance, child support, pensions, etc. ***Must have updated Social Security Award Letter showing the year Current Nicor and Com Ed bills Current public aid medical card/cards (if applicable) Current lease/subsidized housing (if applicable) Maximum Income Levels (30 days): 1 person: $1,459 2 people: $1,966 3 people: $2,474 4 people: $2,981 5 people: $3,489 6 people: $3,996 Please call the disability services department at V, VP, or TTY for more information or to schedule an appointment.

2 Field Trip: 360 Chicago (formerly John Hancock Observatory) When: Wednesday, September 10, 2014 Time: 10:30 a.m. (be there by 10:15 a.m.) Where: 875 N. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL. NEW - Thrilling & New: TILT Feature (First of its kind in the world!) In addition, you will see the beautiful, panoramic view of Chicago from the Observatory. You can learn about the city s history, architecture, natural scenery, and culture by touching the new interactive touch screens. After that, there is a café on the same floor where you can eat and enjoy the amazing floor-toceiling views (optional). Cost: $15 (admission to Observatory only) if 20 people or more; $4 TILT experience. If you want both, the cost is $19. 3 IPAD SUPPORT GROUP We will have ipad Support Group for the Deaf on two days only, Tuesday, September 23rd & Wednesday, November 19th, from 10 a.m. to noon and at Schaumburg Township in Hoffman Estates, IL. The purpose is to share any new technology, learn new things from other people, ask questions from others and have fun socializing. Bring your ipad. It is limited to 12 people. JOB FAIR If you are a job seeker with a disability, a senior or veteran with Technical Skills, come to the Job Fair sponsored by Motorola, Inc. in cooperation with Schaumburg and Palatine Townships and other northwest suburban townships. Date: Tuesday, September 9, 2014 Time: 1 to 4 p.m. Location: Schaumburg Township, One Illinois Blvd., Hoffman Estates, IL All company representatives will be available on-site the entire time to assist job seekers during the fair. A sign language interpreter will be provided. For more information, call V. DEAFNATION EXPO DeafNation Expo will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Harper College, Building M, Wellness & Sports Center, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. There will be exhibits of both national and local vendors and businesses with a wide range of products and services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late Deafened, and Deaf-Blind people. In addition, there will be entertainment and workshops. Admission is free, but to avoid a long line, sign up online to register: If you have no computer access, you can come to the Township and Sarita Phadke will help you or you can use the computers at your local library. DEAF RUSSIA SHOW The World Deaf Magicians Festival will have their fundraising event - Deaf Russia Show, on Saturday, September 13, 2014, 7 p.m., at Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox Avenue, Chicago, IL. Deaf Russians will show some of the their dances and will encourage you to participate. You will also learn Russian Sign Language. In addition, there will be food, drinks and music. Cost: $12 (adults); $10 (children 17 years and under). The cost includes show, food, drinks, dessert, and much more. SECRETARY OF STATE - SUPER SENIORS PROGRAM This event will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Schaumburg Township, Hoffman Estates, IL. Seniors can renew their Driver s License/State ID card. They can take a Rules of the Road review class as well as get their vehicle stickers. Stay tuned for details soon. 4 UPCOMING EVENTS Chicago Hearing Society (CHS) will host a fundraising event, A Night at Lagunitas Brewery, on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Lagunitas Brewery, 1843 S. Washtenaw Avenue, Chicago, IL. Tickets: $60 per person before September 1st and after September 1st or at the door, it is $75. The ticket includes hand-crafted beers, an appetizer buffet, live band, brewery catwalk, games, etc. There will be ASL interpreters during the whole event. The Chicago Catholic Ephpheta (CCE) & International Catholic Deaf Association - US will host a 37th Annual Luncheon - Oktoberfest, on Sunday, October 5, 2014, 11 a.m., at Victoria Beau Jolie, 9950 W. Lawrence, Schiller Park, IL. There will be a cash bar, family-style European meal, cash raffles, raffle prizes, and much more. The cost is $40 per person, but after September 21st, $45 per person (cash only). No refunds. The Catholic Office of the Deaf will host their 10th Anniversary Annual Fundraising event - A Day at the Races, on Saturday, October 25, 2014, 12 to 6 p.m., at Hawthorns Race Course, 3501 S. Laramie Avenue, Stickney, IL. There will be a buffet lunch, live racing programs, raffles & auctions, new prizewinning games, clubhouse admission, and much more. The Kimball Hill Family Deaf Institute will host its 22nd Annual DeaFest on October 31 & November 1, Chairperson: Debby Sampson Committee Members: Jason Altmann, Jan Coleman, Lori Eshoo, Lori Fiscus, Terrie Ortiz, Marcie Sacks-Botto, Susan Teplinsky & Stephanie Wootten-Austin Friday, October 31st: 18 th Annual Deaf High School Academic Bowl, 10 a.m. 2 p.m., Building J Theater (park in lot 5). Several high schools will compete in the mental-sharpening competition, covering Art/ Literature, Deaf Studies, Entertainment, Math, Technology, Science and Social Studies. The defending champion is Indiana School for the Deaf and the runner up is Hinsdale South High School. Free admission. Friday, October 31st: Presentation TBA, 7 10 p.m., at Building J Theater (park in lot 5). Free admission. Saturday, November 1st: DeafNation Expo, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Building M Gym (park in lot 1). This expo is the foremost touring trade show for, by, and about Deaf people. They provide exhibitions and entertainment around the United States at no cost to the public. The Deaf magicians from all over the world will come together to perform magic featuring stage illusions, comedy magic, micro magic, etc. Admission: TBA Saturday, November 1st: New ASL Film: Beyond the Embers: Vol.1, 8-10 p.m., Building J Theater (park in lot 5). Co-Hosted by Harper College Deaf Institute and Chicagoland Deaf Seniors. It will be shown in ASL & English subtitles. Haunted 5K EVENT KODA Illinois will host their fundraising event: Haunted 5K - Run/Walk For Your Life on October 19, 2014, at Lippold Park, 851 W. Route 176, Crystal Lake, IL. The registration starts at 7 a.m. and run/walk starts at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $25 including t-shirt. Proceeds will go to KODA (Kids of Deaf Adults) Camp. This allows KODAs to bond and share unique experiences of growing up in a Deaf household. They are fluent in ASL and familiar with Deaf Culture. The deadline is September 20th. In addition, patrons will have a special opportunity to meet and talk with Deaf artists. 9 CHICAGO WALK4HEARING The Chicago ALDA (Association of Late Deafened Adults) is participating in the HLAA (Hearing Loss Association of Chicago) Walk4Hearing for the fourth year. This event will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at Lincoln Park, Chicago. It is a 3-mile and selfpaced stroll through the park with incredible views of the park, lake, and Chicago s skyline as well as old and new friends to meet, food to eat, and photos. For more information or to register/donate, visit or ITAC PROGRAM Our ITAC Selection Center is available for Amplified phone, CapTel phone, and TTY viewing or testing. ITAC s program distributes FREE phones and TTYs to any Illinois resident with a certified hearing loss, and local residential phone service. Visit for more information. SHIP PROGRAM The Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) offers free individual counseling services at local sites throughout Illinois. There are trained volunteers who can assist with various Medicare issues. There are several SHIP counselors at Schaumburg Township who can assist you in any way. Sarita Phadke is one of the SHIP counselors. For an appointment, call V, VP or TTY. SHIP is not affiliated with any insurance company. SHIP counselors do not sell or solicit any type of insurance.
