By all accounts, the 2009 Kick-Off was a big Success! The location at the Doubletree was wonderful, the food was delicious, and the band was terrific. Information coming at the March Captains meeting. On-Line On-line Committee Leads will be available at all Captains Meetings to help with on-line issues or questions. Message from Accounting: It is important to know your complete team Captains name when turning in money Captains you can set up fundraising by team or individual and money can be turned in either way Please organize and count your money before coming to Accounting minimize coins as much as possible Raffle ticket stubs should be turned in raffle ticket money Accounting cannot update your total online but team captains or a team member can Money can be entered online for individuals or teams Forms are available from Accounting for cash donation receipts these are strictly for cash (not check, raffle tickets, etc) ACS will mail receipts to those who donate using checks

3 Fundraising Watch for a new list of fundraising ideas online. The list will also be available at the March Captains Meeting. Some initial ideas: Use the friends and family option online for fundraising Raffle Tickets Raffle tickets will be available soon. Teams can pick up 40 tickets at a time at all Team Captains meetings. (Remember to turn in the stub with money collected for raffle tickets.) Copies are also available at every Captains Meeting. LOOKING FOR MORE TEAMS TO RELAY! Teams of up to 15 members are asked to raise a minimum of $100 per person. A team packet will be provided to the captain and team members. Captains Meetings are held monthly from Feb. through June to share ideas and bank your fundraising money. Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It will claim an estimated 2,750 men and women in Illinois this year alone. About 7,250 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer this year in Illinois. Many colon cancer deaths can be prevented. Screening tests can find polyps, which are tiny growths that can become cancerous. Removing polyps early can prevent cancer. Screening tests also can find colon cancer early, when there may not be any symptoms and when treatment can be most effective. Colon cancer can develop with no symptoms at first. While early colon cancer often may have no symptoms, sometimes symptoms do occur. Symptoms to watch for include blood in or on the stool, a change in bowel habits, stools that are narrower than usual, general stomach discomfort, frequent gas pains, or weight loss. If you have any of these symptoms, discuss them with your doctor. Only he or she can determine the cause of the symptoms. Who is at risk? Both men and women are at risk for colon cancer. The disease is most common among people aged 50 and older and the risk increases with age. A family history of colon cancer or colon polyps also increases the risk of developing colon cancer. There are steps you can take. If you are age 50 or older and have never been screened, start now. Screening is the best way to find polyps before they become cancerous, or to find an early cancer, when treatment can be most effective. Talk with your doctor or health care professional. Talk with your doctor about the screening options that are right for you. There are several screening tests from which you and your doctor can choose. Find out about insurance coverage of colon cancer screening. Check with your health insurance provider to determine your colon cancer screening benefits. If you are 50 or older and are covered by Medicare, you may be eligible to receive colon cancer screening benefits. If you are uninsured, you may be eligible for free or low-cost screenings through your local community health center or local public health department.

5 Youth Summer High School Research Program for Juniors The American Cancer Society, Illinois Division offers an integrated Summer Research Program designed for high school students in their junior year (Class of 2010). The major objective of the program is to introduce students to scientific cancer research. This program will help students develop their own philosophy in biophysics, biochemistry, immunology, and pharmacology, as well as gain an understanding of cancer and its impact on Illinois residents. ELIGIBILITY Current junior standing (member of the Class of 2010) Demonstrates strong ability in math and science Interested in pursuing a career in science or medicine Minimum GPA of 3.0 in core subjects Legally eligible to work in the United States Frequently Asked Questions 1. How is the program defined? The American Cancer Society, Illinois Division offers an integrated Summer Research Program designed for high school students in their junior year. What is the criteria for a student to apply to the Program? What does a completed application consist of? The Application Form Transcripts Two Letters of Recommendation-at least one from a teacher Essay (300 word maximum) 4. How many students will be selected? 25 students from across the state of Illinois Hurry deadline approaching quickly!

6 5. What is the duration of the Program? Eight weeks (June to mid-august) Regular work hours (eight hours per weekday) Five days a week 6. Is there a stipend? Yes, a total stipend of $2000 will be issued for the 8 week program 7. Does the American Cancer Society reimburse for transportation? No 8. Can students from any high school in the state apply? Students living in Illinois may apply but there are geographical restraints throughout the state. A large amount of ACS funded researchers are based in the Metropolitan Chicagoland Area. The Program does not provide housing such that students should live within 30 miles of a major academic medical center. 9. Who can I contact for more information?
