1 PROBE President s Message Fall 2011 As the new year begins, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Shannon Voss. I graduated from BCTC and have been a dental hygienist for three years. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from UK in Human Nutrition and I m currently employed in the office of Dr. Smith and Stahr, PSC, in Lexington. I served as Treasurer for BGDDHA the past two years and I am honored to serve as President in the coming year. I am looking forward to a great year with the Association. The BGDDHA Board and I have been working very hard to plan a successful year. We are not only looking forward to working closely with the students, but also providing interesting continuing education courses. We would love to have new members join the association; we work better with more people it spreads out the responsibilities and there is strength in numbers. 2 Gauze and Laws: Updates from the Legislative Committee --Donna Fogle and Tonia Socha-Mower We feel that one of the biggest benefits of participating in our professional association is being informed and being able to shape the future of Dental Hygiene. The following are some recent RDH advancements and points of interest as a result of the association s membership: As you know from the elections, RDHs are in the process of obtaining a second representative on the KY Board of Dentistry. However, the Governor has not yet appointed the second RDH to the BOD. KY BOD alumna, Diane Embry, RDH, is participating in the election for the Dental Hygiene Representative position on American Association of Dental Boards. She has asked for support from the KY Board of Dentistry. Of course, 201 KAR 8:562 Section 14, the Emergency regulations that state a licensed RDH may perform laser debridements with advanced training, are now in effect. Details about the training requirements are on the KY BOD website, KDHA has decided not to pursue the Public Health RDH regulations at this time and to abide by the current statue, KRS: (8). The current statute addresses many of the same issues as the Public Health RDH regulations. Therefore, in an effort to get other regulations passed, the decision was made to reconsider pursuing Public Health regulations in the future. The Emergency Regulations, E-regs, or expire in September The Dental Hygienist regulations are expected to be presented at the Aug 15 meeting in Frankfort. A friendly reminder to make sure your contact and/or name change information is updated with the KY BOD. Historically, important information, such as audit information, is sent out by the BOD and a number of RDHs were unreachable. BCTC Dental Hygiene Clinic Renovations The renovation of the dental hygiene clinic at BCTC is moving along. Thanks to all the dentists and hygienists who have donated to the cause! We are planning a huge open house on September 29th from 5:30-7:30 at the clinic. Hopefully everything in Phase 1 of the project will be finished by then. All donors and alumni are invited to attend. 3 Ashley Nunn District V Student Representative to ADHA "I decided to apply for Student Delegate/ Student Alternate Delegate because I thought it would be a good career choice to be involved with the ADHA. I wanted to have the knowledge of what was going on in my profession and to voice my opinions and concerns if the time came. But after attending CLL at the 88 th Annual Session, I learned a great deal about how much more it meant to be involved with ADHA. I met past, present and, I m sure, future presidents of the ADHA. I met members of ADHA who work everyday to make this a great career and who care about the Hygienists they are working for and with and, of course, oral healthcare! I met women and me who have been practicing Dental Hygiene for longer than I ve been alive and I m striving to one day, even know half of what they know. The friends that I met there I hope to have for a lifetime. I know people now from almost every state and I will have them to talk to and motivate me throughout my life and career. They will be a great resource for me, my employer and my patients, which is what networking is all about! While attending this year s annual session as Student Delegate, I had the opportunity to participate in our state and district meetings, as well as our annual House of Delegates. At these meetings, I learned about the topics of concern in our profession and was able to ask questions and even voice my opinions about them. Then, at the House of Delegates I was able to cast my vote on behalf of our district as a student! Being a Student Delegate also allowed me to attend the Student Mega Issues Forum where we discussed topics important to Dental Hygiene Students. The issues were topics being discussed by the ADHA now that could affect us and future Dental Hygiene students, so it gave us a chance to voice our opinions and listen to the ideas and opinions of other students. I also was able to attend Are you Smarter than Team Esther ; a trivia game where we played on teams with other students and allowed us to show what we ve learned and at the end we were able to actually meet Esther Wilkins, she was wonderful! Annual Session expanded my positive view of Dental Hygiene as a career. It gave me encouragement and made me excited to start school and finish as a Registered Dental Hygienist. I hope that I can and will provide a good name for Dental Hygienists by being the best that I can by staying involved and knowing all that I can about the field. I m thankful to have had the opportunity to go to Annual Session this year because of all that I learned and all that I will as I continue to go in the future! I ve learned that this career is more than cleaning teeth, it s about making a difference in the lives of our patients and I m learning that it is also making a difference in me! "

Bluegrass District Dental Hygienists Association Outstanding Dental Hygienist Award BGDDHA is now accepting nominations for the outstanding dental hygienist award. The nominees are selected according to the following criteria: 1. Maintain a current license to practice dental hygiene. 2. Hold current memberships in ADHA, KYDHA and BGDDHA. 3. Demonstrate evidence of active involvement in ADHA, KYDHA and/or BGDDHA. 4. Exhibit evidence of leadership and advancement of the dental hygiene profession. S. Provide evidence of a minimum of three (3) years of professional dental hygiene experience (clinical, educational. research, sales). 1. Demonstrate evidence of lifelong learning. 2. Provide evidence of community involvement. Please include a short narrative explaining why you feel your nominee qualifies for this award and a copy of their resume or CV.
