1 Louisiana Dental Hygienists Association Winter PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The LDHA s Board of Trustees has been busy working on our upcoming 2015 Annual Session. It will be held at The Hilton Garden Inn, 2015 Old Minden Road, Bossier City, Louisiana on March 6-7, Please mark your calendar!! A total of thirteen continuing educational hours will be offered this weekend and twelve of them are clinical hours. A special thanks to Tracy Jordan our 2015 Annual Session Chair, Kim Bourgeois who has been working with our vendors and Christy Wilson our Newsletter/Website Editor. I am AMAZED at how effortlessly they make it look. We have some very interesting speakers presenting as well as many vendors and some non dental vendors to check out at Annual Session. Also, each component is selling raffle tickets to win a free registration to our two day 2015 Annual Session. Please spread the word about our raffle. There will be a winner from each component!!! How great is that? You can also plan to participate in the Silent Auction which benefits the ADHA IOH. There are always great items to bid on. This year the Northeast Component and the Alexandria Component of the LDHA have begun again. I am very excited for this growth. I hope in the future the Lake Charles component will begin again as well! Louisiana was the only state in our district to participate in ADHA s Membership Campaign. A big thanks to Daisy Poole our Treasurer and Debbi Mitchell our Executive Secretary for compiling all the information the ADHA requested in order to participate. ADHA will be doing ALL of the mailings for us. WOW!! Membership has been one of my main goals as your president. Please encourage others to become members of ADHA. We ALL need to come together as hygienists to become a STRONGER organization. This is so that OUR organization can fight for US! I cannot begin to tell you how much I have learned from this journey. But I can tell you how touched I have been by all the hygienists I have met and worked with. The Board of Trustees has been a great support to me. I have enjoyed reading the s that I have received from all the hygienists this year. Thank you for allowing me to be your president. THANK YOU ALL!!! Terri Linzay, RDH - President, LDHA SILENT AUCTION Friday, March 6th, at the LDHA Annual Session, we will be hosting a silent auction to raise money for the ADHA Institute for Oral Health (IOH). Increasingly, the development and structure of biofilm and the self-protective mechanisms associated with biofilm have been understood. The concept of good and bad biofilm has also evolved. The development of microbial loads, competing and synergistic biofilm components play a role in their maturation and pathogenesis. Biofilm communication, microbial resistance and recent developments in biofilm science and diagnostics will also be addressed. Following a review of current data, the course will focus on the management of biofilm including mechanical therapies and chemotherapeutics that disrupt and/or reduce biofilm, as well as those that alter biofilm as an alternate strategy and new technologies will be provided during this seminar. 10 a.m. 12 p.m. Speakers: Dr. Trey Carlton & Dr. Courtney Richter CE Hours: 2 Clinical Hours Title: Respecting Physiology: Understanding Your Role in Patients Lives Hygienists do not simply treat teeth. They treat patients. As health care providers, hygienists should be able to recognize specific "flags" in a patient's mouth and health history, as well as changes in anatomy and physiology as they relate to a poor quality of life/overall health. Daily Headaches; Facial, Neck and Back pain; Migraines, Attention Deficit Disorders and Sleep Breathing Disorders affect millions of Americans. With proper education and screening techniques, dental team members (specifically the Dental Hygienists) can actually change lives. This presentation will help attendees identify signs and symptoms of larger health issues that are so often missed during routine evaluations. It will help hygienists put the "puzzle pieces" together to show the total body response to occlusal or breathing instability as well as direct them towards the best treatment options that are available. Specifically, the presenters will educate the audience about the importance of proper airway assessments on both pediatric and adult patients, how to screen for occlusal disease, show how to recognize the mouth's relationship to head and neck pain, and finally, comfortably understand when and how to refer for treatment. Drs. Richter and Carlton will show how advances in science and technology have given rise to new treatment modalities for developmental problems, Temporomandibular Disorders, facial Pain, severe occlusal instability and sleep breathing disorders. Most importantly, the attendees will leave with knowledge of how, with proper patient education, prevention of these diseases is possible. And you can earn 1 more CE hour by visiting all of the sponsor booths and turning in your signed card. 3

5 This year ADHA has adopted a new Strategic Plan. 1. Core Ideology: Lead the transformation of the dental hygiene profession to improve the public s oral and overall health. 2. Vision Statement: Dental hygienists are integrated into the healthcare delivery system as essential primary care providers to expand access to oral health care. 3. Values: Service, Collaboration, Quality, Community, Lifelong learning, Ethics. How will ADHA achieve this strategic plan? 1. Education: Strengthen collaborative partnerships to transform the formal education of dental hygiene professionals. Expand professional development opportunities for lifelong learners. Build stakeholder knowledge of the profession. 2. Alliances: Expand efforts to fund research to support dental hygiene integration within the healthcare system. Increase strategic partnerships with other provider organizations. Increase organized dental hygiene involvement in the development of new workforce models. 3. Advocacy: Target and support states with active legislation that support our mission. Educate states of all the ADHA legislative resources. Maximize representation with our national partners. Maximize the ability of dental hygienists to take advantage of opportunities in more integrated health systems After ADHA annual session this year I realized we can all do our part to help ADHA meet the goals of the new strategic plan even at a local level. Be more diverse in our local CE s by remembering the mouth and body connection. We need to continue to educate ourselves outside the mouth as well as in the mouth. We need to make sure we call the state board to make sure all our continuing education courses are acceptable. We need to stay connected to our local hygiene schools. Connect with our new students and teach them the importance of being a member of ADHA. Being a member gives us strength for our profession to grow. Support our Legislation Day! Though at times we may have no legislative activity, there will be years in which LDHA needs to advocate for certain bills to be passed. It s important to have a united front and make connections with the people who can help us get there. Legislation Day is an easy and fun day and it can help us achieve our professional goals just by spreading the word of what a hygienist is. Lastly, stay connected! This is one of the most vital ways our profession can grow. We can stay connected by websites and Facebook with national, state and local levels. We can also share information state to state! I realize all states have their own state laws in the hygiene community but we can share ideas with states that are pushing the profession forward! 5
