Well before sunrise volunteers were busy setting up the transition area for the 35 athletes who were due to arrive in the early morning hours. At 8 a.m. the swim heats began with the head timer signaling the start of the race. Over the next three hours, 35 men and women ages 24 to 68 would swim 500 meters or yards, bike 16 miles of hilly country roads and run 3.1 miles along McKinley Street and Stanley Avenue. All who began would finish the event this year under beautiful skies. The YMCA would like to congratulate Billy Dentler, the overall male winner, with a time of 1:22:34 and Audrey List, the overall female winner, with a time of 1:31:10. The YMCA would also like to thank and congratulate all of those who participated in and completed this test of endurance. Finally, it should not be overlooked that this race would not have been successful were it not for the more than 15 volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to assist with this event. Thanks to each of you for your support of the YMCA and these athletes.

6 MAGIC AND MORALITY On October 12th, 13th and 14th, Illusionist and Youth Speaker David Corn donated three Magic & Morality shows to the YMCA After School Programs at Fayetteville, Scotland and the YMCA (including the After School Teen Club). David s program is based out of Houston, Texas. He is visiting Chambersburg and decided to reach out to see if he could help emphasize the Y s core values by presenting for our children. During his show, David captured the children s attention with various magic tricks and used those opportunities to weave in lessons about patience, obeying authority and respect. A total of 125 children thoroughly enjoyed the shows, and the Y was happy to partner with a group that works to emphasize the values the Y holds dear. 7 TRICK - OR - TREATING SAFETY TIPS Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat. Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house. Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation. Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses. Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit welllit houses. Don't stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers. Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flameresistant costumes. Courtesty of the Centers for Disease Control HELP SUPPLY A BASIC NEED The Chambersburg YMCA is collecting long sleeve t-shirts to donate to our Sam s Program participants. Please help the Y and the community by donating shirts that are CASD Dress Code Compliant (striped or solid, please no logos). Please donate shirts by October 25 th
8 TRAINING WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH ELLEN POE Personal Trainer As part of the personal training staff, I am pleased to say that I am very excited about continuing my fitness career here at the Chambersburg YMCA. Fitness has always been second nature to me. I enjoy the many different avenues and connections it allows. As with most things in life, I believe the process of fitness teaches us much more about who we are or can be than just about lifting weights. My formal fitness career began roughly 6 years ago, as I took a position of graduate assistant for the strength and conditioning department for Frostburg State University. This position allowed me to design strength and conditioning programs for division III athletic teams, primarily Women s Basketball, Softball, Men s Soccer and Cheerleading. This position really solidified my passion for fitness as a career. Following FSU, I worked as a personal trainer within a private health club, training clients that ranged in age and fitness levels. The differences between each of my personal clients allowed me to really learn how to incorporate progressions and regressions all while pushing each individual on their fitness goals. Though my life is heavily influenced by fitness and athletics, I do enjoy other blessings of every day happenings. My large and connected family keeps me busy, especially with 8 nieces and nephews. Lucy, my active dog, is another type of adventure I thoroughly love. As an avid sports fan, I enjoy keeping up to date on the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Redskins, Washington Spirit and several college basketball teams. My career aspiration is to be a well-round fitness and strength professional, who challenges athletes and individuals to reach the goals they have set. I aim to be a mentor and to help them become successful in all their fitness endeavors. I am thrilled to have this opportunity at your YMCA. GRANT SMITH Personal Trainer My name is Grant Smith; I am a newly hired Personal Trainer to the Chambersburg YMCA fitness team. I have over 6 years of experience training people of all ages of which three years have been certified through W.I.T.S. I have a passion for fitness and athletics and my goal is to help you obtain yours. Exercise is a journey and I want to assist you in the right direction to achieve your ultimate success. I completed my two year degree at Hagerstown Community College, obtaining my A.S. in Health and Physical Education as well as a Letter in Fitness. Currently I am attending Shippensburg University, completing my Bachelor s Degree in Psychology with a double minor in Coaching and Exercise Science. If I were to continue my education, I would pursue my Masters in Sport Psychology. During my time at the University, I have been a leader on the Track and Field team. I am currently the record holder in the shot put for the indoor and outdoor seasons, as well as the Hammer throw outdoors. God has blessed me during the last 3 years with my throwing career as well as my personal life. God has blessed me with 2 NJCAA National Championships in the Shot put, 2 Division two shot put All-American Honors, 4 PSAC men s shot put Champion awards, one PSAC men s Hammer Throw Champion award and PSAC Field MVP 2015 award. In my personal life He has blessed me with my wife, Liz, in December of As a trainer I specialize in training athletes of all ages. My goal in life is to own a gym, which is located just outside of a major city, and train inner city athletes and get them to college and away from the city life. My athletic goals are to make the 2020 USA Olympic team and World Championships teams in years to come.
9 A NEW WORKOUT PARTNER Maintaining a Healthy Pregnancy In the past, women were urged to avoid or cut down in physical activity while pregnant. Today we know differently, not only is it okay but it has positive benefits. Exercising during pregnancy can help relieve stress, fight gestational diabetes and may help you have an easier pregnancy and delivery. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), as well as the American Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (ASOG), recommends that normally healthy pregnant women may continue an already-established exercise regimen. Here at the YMCA we have a few individuals that are continuing their exercise through pregnancy; Melissa Seiders, Sarah Wilson and Cassie Kennedy. Exercise is restricted for some individuals and precautions should be taken as the mother progresses through her trimesters, but if you confirm with your doctor and listen to your body, you and your new workout partner will gain rewards through exercise in your pregnancy. INCLUSION: IT S FOR EVERYONE The Chambersburg YMCA is proud to partner with Healthways Prime, Healthways Silver Sneakers and ASH Silver & Fit insurance programs. HERE FOR OUR COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS FOR HEALTHY LIVING For more information and to find out if you are eligible for any of these programs, please call the phone number on the back of your insurance card.
