2 The Benefits of Rowing Are you taking part in our June rowing challenge? If so, you are not only in the running for a prize, you should be seeing improvements in your fitness and stamina. The rowing machine works out several major muscle groups and also gets your heart pumping and lungs working. Below is a summary of just a few of the benefits of including the rowing machine in your workout plan. Rowers exercise the rhomboids in the shoulders, trapezins in the upper back, and lats in the lower back. One of the best rowing machine benefits is the workout for your lower body. The main muscles targeted are your quads, but your calves and glutes will also feel the burn. A rowing machine is an effective way to raise your heart rate and increase your oxygen intake making it an effective cardio workout. Using a rowing machine can be a great option for those who are unable to perform weight-bearing exercises. The motion of rowing is natural and low impact and places minimal stress on the joints. 3 Biggest Morning Tea Thank you to all YMCA Epping staff and members who participated and contributed to our biggest morning teas! We raised almost $200 for Cancer research. Member Morning Tea Please join us after your KinderGym class or workout on Monday 26 th June (10.00am-12.00noon) for our delicious and free member s morning tea! Foam Pit Makeover The foam pit in gym 1 will be out of action from Monday 3 July to Saturday 8 July. Classed will run as normal during that period but there will be no access to foam pit. Learn to Play Holidays Learn to Play will be on holidays from Monday 3 rd July, returning on Tuesday 18 th July. Lilli Pilli Street We have been informed by Parramatta Council that Lilli Pilli Street will be closed for at least three days in the first week of the school holidays (1-8 July). During this period please allow extra time to find parking. There will be pedestrian access. Vacation Care Bookings for Vacation Care are now being taken online. Please visit or call for more details. Phone Scam Warning Please be aware of a phone scam targeting migrants. Callers are stating that they are from the Department of Immigration & Border Protection and are asking for payment so Australian visas are not cancelled. This department DOES NOT ask for payments over the phone. Do not volunteer your details or pay money. Get equipped to get fit at YMCA Epping! We have a great range of active wear as well as quality Morgan boxing gloves or pads for only $25 each or get the set for $40. And what about a handy zipper workout towel for your keys, phone and membership card only $18. During the month we were very fortunate to have our stadium floor re-surfaced. The job was carried out by The Whiteley Group using a new product called Sport Kote PC Floor System. This meant that the stadium was only out of action for 1 full day. We are sure you ll agree that it looks great!

4 Adult Gym Since the beginning of 2017 a small group of men and women have been meeting each Monday morning for adult gymnastics. These classes are a fun and very different way to get fit, says one participant. The classes are really challenging and most of us are able to do things that we never thought we could! Another great outcome of this program is that the fees collected from this class have been donated to YMCA NSW s Brightside program. Brightside is a free fitness program that gives people living with mental health issues the opportunity to enhance their physical health, wellbeing and social engagement. The Monday Adult Gym group donated $1,530 to this program. Congratulations Kathryn YMCA Epping coach Kathryn Ramsay (pictured front centre) recently competed in the 2017 Australian National Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne. As a member of the NSW Level 10 team she took home a bronze and individually she placed 4th on the vault, 6th on the beam and 12 th overall! Chocolate fundraiser Thank you to everyone who participated in our chocolate fundraiser. We raised a fabulous $5,700! This means that we will no longer have to swelter in summer or shiver the winter as we will be able to get our air conditioning fixed.

5 Benefits of Badminton Our Learn to Play sessions are not only a great environment where children can learn to kick, pass and serve, they also benefit greatly from the skills they learn in each sport. Below are just some of the benefit of badminton. Physical Aspect Running, jumping, lunging, overhead reaching. During a 1 hour social game of Badminton, you can burn approximately 250 calories. Social Aspects Team work and sportsmanship. It s a great sport to meet new people. Increased muscle tone Fantastic sport to strengthen both the upper and lower body muscles. Skills can be transferred into other sports Skills like speed, agility, strength, fast reflexes, and strategy. Why not come down and trial our Learn to Play Badminton class on Friday afternoons from 4pm 5pm. Open to children of all levels, from ages 5years to 12 years old. 6 End of Term Games Reminder to all of our Learn to Play members, the week of 26th June 30th June is the last week of term. This week will be games week where will play variety of different games during your regular class time. Be prepared for a fun filled hour! Learn to Play classes will start back on the 17th July Farewell Adam This month we have farewelled long time YMCA gymnastics coach, coordinator, and all round legend Adam Rose. Adam began working at the Y 2000 as a gymnastics instructor at YMCA St Ives and then took on the role Gymnastics Coordinator for YMCA Epping and St Ives in During his time with the Y Adam has been responsible developing for numerous staff and students. His passion and dedication for coaching has resulted in a number of gymnasts competing at national level. Adam is leaving to open his own gym with his wife Maegan. We wish them every success for the future!
