2 ABOUT US Established in 1998, the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) is an alliance of 17 leading mental health care and service organizations, representing health care providers as well as persons and families living with mental health issues. CAMIMH s strength is that it brings together an incredibly wide array of the diverse Canadian mental health community. It is uniquely placed to speak for a broad range of mental health stakeholders in Canada. CAMIMH strives to educate Canadians to end the stigma associated with mental illness through its two annual campaigns.

4 CAMIMH S CAMPAIGNS The Champions of Mental Health Awards is one of Canada s premiere mental health campaigns. Each year, this national campaign recognizes exceptional thought-leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the field of mental health in Canada. The awards gala is accompanied by a national media and public awareness campaign. There is a national open nomination process that runs from January to February. The growing body of Champions alumni represents some of the best advocates for mental health in Canada. This impressive scope of nominees provides CAMIMH with a unique position to spread the conversation about mental illness into every region across Canada. Award winners are chosen in March and are flown to Ottawa in May to accept their award alongside dignitarians and the mental health community. This campaign gives our partners national coverage at the event and in all the communication materials leading up to and following the event. CAMIMH honours a diverse group of Champions each year in the following categories: Sharon Johnston Champion of Mental Health Award for Youth Media Workplace Mental Health Community Organization Community Individual Parliamentarian Innovation Researcher or Clinician

5 PAST CHAMPIONS OF MENTAL HEALTH: Dr. HEATHER STUART Research Dr. Stuart works to describe and understand the experience of stigma from the other side - from the perspective of people who have a mental illness and their families. In February 2012, Dr. Stuart became the first Bell Mental Health and Anti-Stigma Research Chair. Celina is an advocate for the mental health and addictions community, working with the Civic Action organization, and speaking at events from high schools and universities to CTV s Power Play and CBC s Power and Politics. She is vocal about her own personal experience with mental illness and is passionate about bringing awareness and education on mental health issues to marginalized communities. CELINA CAESAR-CHAVANNES Parliamentarian MARY WALSH Media An accomplished actress, comedian, and political satirist, Mary Walsh has been entertaining Canadians for more than 20 years. By sharing her own struggles, Walsh has reduced the stigma associated with mental illness and addiction and has raised awareness about the need for increased support for people living with mental illness.

6 CAMIMH S CAMPAIGNS Mental Illness Awareness Week is a national public awareness and advocacy campaign held throughout the first week of October. Leading up to Mental Illness Awareness Week, through a national nomination campaign, CAMIMH selects individuals (referred to as Faces) who are living in recovery from mental illness. These individuals represent the Alliance and act as spokespeople for all Canadians living with mental illness. CAMIMH s Faces put a name and a face to various mental mental illnesses and show Canadians that with treatment, and support, they can live productive and fulfilling lives. In preparation for Mental Illness Awareness Week, CAMIMH produces profile videos of each individual Face. These videos are then premiered on Paliament Hill in front of parliamentarians, guests, and our partners. Partners logos get featured at the end of each profile video which reaches hundreds of thousands of Canadians each year. CAMIMH also produces posters and postcards of the Faces which lists all of our partners at the bottom of each material. These materials are free to the public and distributed to hundreds of corporate and non-profit organizations across Canada. This initiative is extremely successful and we distribute hundreds of thousands of materials each year.

7 PAST FACES OF MENTAL ILLNESS: DEXTER NYUURNIBE For Dexter, talking about mental health was never something that was openly discussed. Having grown up living in various countries with a single father, he found himself repeatedly as someone who didn t fit in because of what he looked like. That, along with a traumatic incident at a young age would follow him into university. Dexter s mental health struggle came to its peak when he tried ending his life in his 3rd year of school. Being diagnosed with depression and facing homelessness, Dexter wondered why no one talked about mental health in his community. This would lead him to disclosing his battle through the school newspaper. Since then, Dexter has helped organize awareness events, presented a Tedx talk, spoken at summits, universities and high schools and shared his story at a session of the World Bank and WHO in Washington D.C. RCMP Constable Peter Neily was involved in a fatal shooting while on the job in Surrey B.C. in 2011 that had serious lingering emotional effects. Peter was suffering silently with post-traumatic stress related to an operational stress injury. After many years of self-stigmatisation, Peter had a breakthrough moment during Mental Illness Awareness Week He decided to take a brave step and share his story with his RCMP colleagues through a video. This resulted in an incredible outpouring of support from his colleagues, many of whom opened up about their own struggles with mental illness. Seeing the positive impact it had, Peter is no longer apologetic of his story and the video has since been released publicly so those outside the force can learn from Peter s experiences. Today, Peter continues to share his experience with posttraumatic stress on and off the job with the intention of reaching out to the community and helping others who struggle. PETER NEILY JACK SADDLEBACK Jack is a Cree two-spirit transgender man. Born a biological female, he came to understand that his inner identity didn t match his outer experience. As a gender-queer child, Jack struggled with constant bullying. Jack s mental health deteriorated throughout his teenage years resulting in a severe depression and ultimately a suicide attempt at 15. Jack s road to recovery has been challenging, dealing with stigma, discrimination, and especially a lack of adequate services in rural Alberta. Jack s appreciation for his family s devotion pushed him to apply for the Mental Health Commission of Canada s Youth Council. As the former University of Saskatchewan Students Union s Pride Centre Coordinator, and the current USSU Vice President of Student Affairs, Jack is a strong leader for mental health. Jack has also helped to create safe-space for queer people within First Nations cultural ceremonies by establishing gender-neutral sweats and pipe-ceremonies on campus. Jack s culture plays a huge role in his well-being.
