THE COMPASS CARMINE IACULLO, GRAND KNIGHT SPRING 2010 A MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Worthy Brothers All, As the Columbian year winds down, I am happy to say that as your Grand Knight it has been a very rewarding time! I want to say thank you to all of our members and friends who have made this year a big success so far! We have accomplished so many things this year including; Columbus Day Social (co-hosted with Livingston UNICO), Blood Drive/Pancake Breakfast, Food Drive, Beefsteak Dinner, Lenten Fish Fry and Pasta Nights just to name a few. We also hosted many parties including; Underprivileged Children's Christmas Party. Member Christmas Party/Raffle, Nun s Appreciation Dinner, New Year s Eve Party, 1/2 Way to St. Patrick s Day and Carnevale. We also brought back two of our longstanding traditions of a Memorial Mass and May Crowning Mass at our council home. When I first accepted the honor of serving as your Grand Knight, I asked members to get involved, I am pleased to see those of you who have come out to help with so many events. Please keep in mind that we have many more events coming up and appreciate the help of those running them and the support of our members in attending. Remember, this is not MY council, it is OUR council. So I remind you that all of your help and support is important and appreciated. Looking forward to the Columbian Year, I decided to run for a second term. I feel that there are many more things that we can accomplish together. Please remember that during the months of July and August, we only have one council meeting on the third Tuesday of each month. We are also seeking a new Membership Chairman to take over for Tom DeNigris, Deputy Grand Knight. I am also seeking a chairman for our annual Nun s Appreciation Dinner and a Public Relations chairman. If you are interested in filling these roles, please let me know as soon as possible. They only way our council will grow is if YOU get involved, so please attend meetings and let me know what you think. I would love to hear your ideas regarding events that we should have or projects that we should get involved in. I especially want to thank those brothers who helped out with bartending, serving, setting up and cleaning up. You guys did a Awards Night On Saturday evening June 26, 2010, we will hold our annual yeomen's job, thank you! awards night beginning at 7pm at our Council Hall. We will St. Patrick s Day Sandwiches be handing out awards in the following categories: On Wednesday, March 17, 2010 we sold our corned beef Community Service sandwiches at our council. The event was well attended and Religious we raised over $2500 for the building. I wish to thank Brother Vince Guariglia, PGK and his crew for cooking and Knight of the Year serving the delicious corned beef sandwiches and pea soup. I We will also have several organizations to make presentations also wish to thank the bartending staff of Brothers Ernie and to receive donations from your Council. It will also be Guiles and Matt Ladolcetta for keeping everybody happy at our Super 50/50 drawing. If you have not purchased your the bar! tickets, please send them in as soon as possible. If you need Carnevale/St. Valentines Day Celebration more tickets, please contact Brother Mike Lenzi, PGK at We held our Carnevale/St. Valentines Day celebration on Saturday February 13, The event was well attended Annual Golf Outing and we raised over $1000 for our charitable endeavors. Once Our annual golf outing will take place the morning of June again, I wish to thank Brother Vince Guariglia, PGK for cooking the delicious food that was served and for all of his efforts 28, 2010 beginning at 9am at the East Orange Golf Course in Millburn. The cost is $115 per golfer which includes a dinner in organizing the event. All of our events take a great deal of and cocktail hour back at the Council. We all must do a better job to support and The Knights of Columbus Motorcycle Ministry is organizing a strengthen our Council! Poker Run to benefit the NJ Special Olympics. The event will be held on Saturday June 12, 2010 (rain or shine). The cost is May Crowning Mass $20 per rider and $15 per passenger. Registration starts at We celebrated our May Crowning Mass on May 8, :30am, Kickstands up at 11am. The ride will start at the Our Worthy Chaplain, Fr. Chris Isinta celebrated the Mass at Vince Lombardi Council #6552, 872 Leonardville Rd in Leonardo, NJ and end at St. Andrew Council #5088, 109 Mor- gave out two $500 donations to the following seminarians; our council and we have about 40 people attend. 3 CARMINE IACULLO, GRAND KNIGHT PAGE 3 Columbian Association News: Capital Campaign The Columbian Association and Council 3533 wish to gratefully thank all those individuals who have so far made donations to the Capital Fund Drive which began late in February. As of May 19, 2010 we have received generous donations from 64 individuals totaling just under $5700 (an average of almost $90 per donation). Donations have ranged from $5 to $500. However, when put in perspective, 64 donations is not really a great amount considering our council has about 350 registered members. Members still wishing to make a donation are requested to do so by June 30. Checks should be made out to "Columbian Association of Livingston" and mailed to the Association Treasurer, Matt Ladolcetta, 5 No. Cedar Pkwy, Livingston, NJ Any questions, please contact Matt by (mjladolcetta@verizon.net) or phone ( ). Our Council Hall Currently, Our Council Hall is not open except for meeting nights, rentals, degrees, district meetings and social functions. It would be great to have it open on a regular basis like Friday nights and to have the bar staffed by volunteer bartenders and to offer a bar menu so our brothers, relatives and friends could stop in and have a drink or a light snack after work. If you are interested in opening and staffing the bar on a Friday night, please let me know. We will need at least 4 members to staff the hall on a regular basis, I don t want to have just 1 member staffing the hall every week. Currently, we rent the hall to the St. James Jacobite Syrian Orthodox church every Sunday and a Karate School every Thursday and have two Landscaper Groups meet once a month to offset to costs of insurance and maintenance. Remember, this is OUR council and it will not be around much longer unless we have OUR members support OUR council. New Business: Brothers, We just came back from the NJ State Convention in Wildwood which was held May 13-16, We had a number of brothers attend the convention and we hosted the hospitality suite this year. When I started my tenure as Grand Knight, one of my goals was to go down to Wildwood and receive an award like so many others councils due in the state of NJ. I am proud to say that this year, my brothers and our council did not disappoint. We received an award for donating over $1000 to Respect Life Activities. I just want to say congratulations to all of you brothers that made this possible! We have exemplified the degree of CHARITY by donating to these worthy causes. Next year will give us another shot at winning more awards! I also want to acknowledge our fellow brother, Advocate and District Deputy, Richard Rafanello, ESQ, PGK. for making the circle of honor for being one of the hardest working District Deputies in the Newark Archdiocese! When you see Rich, please congratulate him on this honor. Kidney Donor Needed Gloria Jean Guariglia, niece of PGK Vince Guariglia is in need of a kidney. Her blood type is O Positive. Help Wanted We are looking for brothers who have skills in the following areas: Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Painting, Landscaping, Roofing, Tree Removal and General Maintenance. We have various needs at the Carmine Iacullo, Grand Knight council and we need volunteers to help us out with these projects.
