1 March 2015 The Knightly News of Columbus Council 9168 St. Luke Catholic Community Smyrna, Tennessee Dear Brother and Families, Officers GRAND KNIGHT Charles Logsdon DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT Allen Potts CHANCELLOR Pete Verhoeven WARDEN Ralph Fuller RECORDER Patrick Fitzgerald FINANCIAL SECRETARY Bill Elliott TREASURER Frank Speer LECTURER Leonard Persinger ADVOCATE Tom Crafton INSIDE GUARD Ray Hafner OUTSIDE GUARD Daniel Douglas TRUSTEE, ONE YEAR Leonard Persinger TRUSTEE, TWO YEAR Barry Nichols TRUSTEE, THREE YEAR Barrett Jones CHAPLAIN Father Jacob Dio My thanks to all the Brothers and their families who joined Father for the praying of the of Our Mother during Lent to date. There are still a few more opportunities before the end of Lent. Thanks also to the Brothers and families who had been a part of the Meatless meals, and who have participated in the the on the Fridays of Lent to date. It means a lot to Father and our Church community to see us practice our faith, especially in preparation for our Lord s suffering on the and Resurrection. The time we give is small compared to what Jesus gave us. Remember last month I asked if you were tired of cold, rain, ice and snow. Guess what, we have gotten to enjoy more of the beautiful weather that God has given us. I pray that each of us are thankful for what God gives us. For the month of March, our Family of the Month is the Craig Bernhoft family. Craig, Shauntel, Dani Drew, and Jasmine Nicole are very active in our Parish and our community. The Bernhoft family has given much during this month because of the issue encountered at our last event at LP Field. Aside from the stress arising from the situation that the entire family had to endure, Craig lost time from work and money as a result of being a dedicated servant and Brother of this Council. The Bernhoft family is an excellent example of Christian faith and service to our Church, our Council, and our community. We are truly blessed to have them as a part of our of Columbus family. For the month of March, our Knight of the Month is Mike Rupnik for his outstanding service to our Council. Mike has been helping with our Suppers, attending our Rosaries and the the. Mike attends our meetings and offers comments on pending business. Mike has helped the Council with our community activities. Mike attends regularly. Mike has always been there for us when he has been available proving that a good knight is a Brother who makes an effort as time allows. We are truly blessed to have his dedicated service and to call him a Brother Knight. Please keep Father Jacob in your prayers that he will continue to be a dedicated servant of the Lord and our Parish. Let us also keep all our sick and distressed family members and especially Bishop Choby in our prayers. Vivat Jesus! Charles Logsdon Grand Knight Council 9168 Fraternal Benefits News Since our founding in 1882, the primary mission of the of Columbus has been to protect families from the financial ruin caused by the death of the breadwinner. Allow our Field Agent to make an appointment to review your current situation and show you some of the many wonderful products the of Columbus can offer you and your family members to help meet retirement needs, and financial needs in times of family member loss, whether spouse or children. Our Servicing Field Agent is Curt Simmons. To call him and schedule an appointment dial: or
2 See the attached calendars below for Council and Parish related events of interest to Brother. 1 st Degree Exemplification Our next tentative First Degree is scheduled for March 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. as a second make up for our February degree that was canceled because of ice and frigid weather. Titans Season IS Finished!!! The 2014 season is in the books. Although not a good season for the Titans, it was a good season for our Council. Hopefully the Titans will rebuild, and the 2015 season will be better. We have to start thinking about staffing our concession stand this next season, and help will be needed. We encourage members and adult family members to get trained (if not already) and help us out by volunteering to work a game or two throughout the season. For more information about training and working the Titans games contact Alan Stanley by calling or by at apstanley@bellsouth.net. St. Luke s Free Films Brad Schepisi is conducting a free film night at St. Luke s each month. Watch the Church bulletin for the next feature, date and time. Support of Veteran s in Local VA Hospitals The have setup in the Social Hall a box to collect items to be donated to our disabled veterans who are in our local VA Hospitals. There is a list of items that are needed attached to the box. There are a lot of our veterans who have no family at all and no means of getting just the basic hygiene items. If you are able to help, please drop off your items in the Narthex. If you have large items to donate or want to volunteer some of your time at the VA Hospitals, for more information you can contact Vic Finch, at Tootsie Roll MR Drive Brother Walter Koth, our MR Director reported that our Council raised an additional $ at our MR Drives at Walmart and Kroger in January, $ at the Smyrna High Football and Basketball games, $ at Smyrna Rescue, $34.00 at Gil s Ace Hardware, and $ and $ at es for a total of $ along with a total of 230 man hours to date in our MR Drives. Walter indicated we had an upcoming Drive at Kmart (an April Saturday TBD) and three more Smyrna Rescue ham breakfast drives before we finish out this year. With a little luck, we hope to have raised around a total of $ This promises to be our best MR Drive year in a long time. Walter and I thank everyone who has given time to help the Special Citizens of our Community and State. Do you golf? Can you field a team to participate in the Tennessee Insurance Agency Seminarian Fund Raiser Golf Outing? Do you have a company that would like to sponsor a hole?
