Dear Zotias, Advocacy is the focus of this issue of The Zotia. We hear alot about service, but advocacy is also vitally importat to our work to improve the lives of wome ad girls worldwide. What is advocacy? Simply put, advocacy is expressig support for a cause. Advocacy should be ad is apart of everythig we do at the iteratioal ad local levels. Yes, we support projects iteratioally through cotributios to the Zota Iteratioal Foudatio; however, each of these projects also has a advocacy compoet. For example, i Rwada, commuity mobilizatio campaigs are beig used to raise awareess of the issue of violece agaist wome ad girls i a effort to prevet further icideces of violece while at the same time victims of violece receive the ecessary care via Oe Stop Ceters. I Liberia, fistula survivors traied as advocates are essetial to prevet additioal cases of obstetric fistula ad ecourage wome already livig with a fistula to seek treatmet. We also egage i advocacy whe we promote our educatioal programs. We ecourage wome to pursue their educatioal ad professioal goals i traditioally male-domiated fields, thereby icreasig the umber of wome i these fields. We recogize youg wome for their demostrated leadership skills ad civic cotributios; ad, i doig so, we ecourage them to become active citizes ad to cotiue to seek out leadership positios as they grow. With the support of Zota Iteratioal ad the US Fud for UNICEF (Zota has doated US$2.1 millio sice 2008), Rwada is o track to achieve the first HIV-free geeratio by 2015 a icredible accomplishmet! I additio to our iteratioal service projects i Rwada ad Liberia, we are supportig three projects to raise awareess ad prevet violece agaist wome ad girls i Hoduras, Samoa ad 12 coutries i Africa ad Asia. Advocacy is essetial to the success of all three of these projects ad to esurig log-term trasformatioal chage i addressig the issue of violece agaist wome ad girls i these coutries. Elimiatio of violece agaist wome ad girls i all its forms was also the theme of this year s CSW i New York i March, which Iatteded alog with 34 other Zotias from aroud the world. Durig this two-week coferece, more tha 6,000 wome ad me from aroud the globe came together i New York to raise awareess of the issue of violece agaist wome ad girls ad discuss real-world solutios to prevet ad ed geder-based violece i all its forms. Some of the recurrig themes heard throughout the NGO parallel evets that took place durig CSW were the special eeds of adolescet girls, child marriage, huma traffickig, ad the role of me ad boys i edig violece agaist wome ad girls. Although Agreed Coclusios were fially reached at the close of CSW57, the difficult discussios leadig up to those coclusios illustrated the challeges ad dissetig voices we face i workig to ed geder-based violece aroud the world. The issue of sexual ad reproductive rights was especially cotetious; however, i the ed, 131 coutries reached cosesus o a 17-page documet that sets global stadards for actio to prevet ad ed violece agaist wome ad girls. MATERNAL MORTALITY MDG Target: Reduce by three quarters, betwee 1990 ad 2015, the materal mortality ratio. Sice 1990, the materal mortality ratio has bee cut i half; however, itisstill far from the Milleium Developmet Goal target for The materal mortality ratio i developig regios is still 15 times higher tha i the developed world with sub-sahara Africa ad Souther Asia accoutig for 85 percet of materal deaths worldwide. These two regios are also the same areas with the lowest umber of births atteded by a skilled health professioal. Access to ateatal care has icreased, yet almost half of all pregat wome still do ot receive care with the recommeded frequecy. At the ZI Board Meetig i February 2002 the followig defiitio of advocacy was adopted: Advocacy is the expressio of support for or oppositio to a cause, argumet or proposal. Advocacy may iclude ifluecig laws, legislatio or attitudes. Advocacy was fudametal to Zota from the very begiig, iflueced as Zota was by a legacy of wome s struggles i the past. With its birthplace i the State of New York, Zota s foudig members were coscious of a log history of brigig wome s issues ito the public area. As far back as 1848, New York had bee host to the world s first wome s rights covetio at Seeca Falls. Callig for wome s ulimited suffrage, the covetio body demaded wome s equal status uder the law, i marriage, i educatio, ad i the professios (A History of Zota Iteratioal , page 2). By the 1930 s ad 1940 s world peace had become the sigle most importat issue for Zota s members; ad, i 1936, Zota was defiitely committed to the movemet for iteratioal peace. She helped develop the cocepts of the UN Iteratioal Wome s Year ad the Iteratioal Decade for Wome. These cocepts led to a series of UN World Cofereces for Wome. As a result of her visio, Helvi helped ulock the door to global commuicatio for wome ad the power iheret i such commuicatio. Wome bega to uderstad their true value i the home ad workplace, their rights as huma beigs, ad the importace of educatio, good health, materal welfare, ad beig a voice for sustaiable huma developmet (A History of Zota Iteratioal , page 28). Zota s focus o the issue of violece agaist wome was highlighted by the Zota Iteratioal Summit o Violece Agaist Wome held i Washigto, DC i Atteded by iterested me ad wome from all parts of the world, it looked at the causes, costs ad cosequeces of violece agaist wome, ad came up with possible solutios. Not oly did the Summit put Zota s ame firmly o the map as a iteratioal voice o the issue, it resulted i the formatio of our o-goig ZISVAW program. Zota took iformatio from ZISVAW to the Fourth World Coferece o Wome held i Beijig, Chia, i September To astadig-room audiece, ZI Presidet Folake Solake SAN (PIP ) preseted her Zota Ope Letter to the Wome of the World o the importace of cooperatio i advacig the status of wome worldwide across cultures, across atios, across geders, ad toward uiversal peace (A History of Zota Iteratioal ,page 37). This was advocacy at the highest level. I the last 10 years, advocacy has emerged as oe of the two official meas by which we accomplish our missio, which ow reads workig together to advace the status wome worldwide through service ad advocacy. Visioary iteratioal presidets ad iteratioal boardmembers have emphasized that Zota svoice resoates best through well-focused service ad advocacy. From , Legislative Awareess & Advocacy (LAA) was a Zota Iteratioal subcommittee alog with 7other subcommittees uder the large umbrella of the Status of Wome Service Committee. The, i 2008, iteratioal committees were restructured, ad Iteratioal LAA became a full committee. Subsequet amedmet to the ZI Bylaws aliged the orgaizatioal structure ofdistricts ad clubs so that advocacy is ow oe of three required committees at the club ad district levels. Today, better commuicatio tools are allowig us to begi to further itegrate Zota s iteratioal advocacy with district ad club efforts. This historical perspective helps us to see some ogoig themes ad challeges for Zota advocacy. 1. The major issues ad challeges for wome have ot chaged sigificatly i all this time. 2. Zota Iteratioal has bee asmall, but effective advocate i iteratioal forums. 3. Some Zota clubs ad districts have leveraged impressive outcomes, ad some still struggle to see how advocacy fits for them. Let us examie each of the above themes separately. Issues &challeges for wome Wage iequity, glass ceiligs, coutless forms of violece agaist wome, heavily female proportios of disease, illiteracy, poverty, as well as iequitable ad puitive laws is t it amazig how ureletig these problems are?! It was the first ever Advocacy Forum orgaised o a district level. This Advocacy Forum, titled UNITE Agaist Domestic Violece NOW, was iitiated by District 17 Goveror Wiie Teoh ad orgaized by the District Advocacy Chair, DrMarily Aletaja, with the full support of the District Board ad a17-member strog Orgaizig Committee led by the Area Directors of Areas 1 ad 5. Guided ad ecouraged by ZI Advocacy Represetative Paulie Ng, the Orgaizig Committee put together aprogram to facilitate a exchage of views o four areas to stop domestic violece, amely awareess, educatio, solutios ad legislatio.
