The 17 SDGs, also called the Global Goals for sustaiable developmet, ad their 169 idicators, seek to chage the course of the 21st cetury, addressig key challeges such as poverty, iequality, ad violece agaist wome. The goals will guide world leaders ad the global commuity as we govermets, NGOs ad private corporatios work together to realize the huma rights of all people, eradicate poverty ad protect our plaet for future geeratios. 5 The Post-2015 Ageda ad the Sustaiable Developmet Goals (SDGs) Mary Lou Shippe participates i itergovermetal egotiatios o the post-2015 developmet ageda i New York THEUNSUMMITTOADOPTTHEPOST 2015 DEVELOPMENT AGENDA HAS ALREADY CONCLUDED AND THE AGREED DOCUMENT WASPRODUCEDINNEWYORK ON THE 3RD OF AUGUST AT 6:25 PM. The 2030 Ageda for Sustaiable Developmet promises to be a trasformative ageda, to achieve equal rights ad empower wome, to elimiate the tyray of poverty, to heal ad secure our plaet. For all members of the UN Committee, ad especially for UN Committee Chairma Leslie Wright, the time ad eergy commitmet was arduous. The NY team of Zota Iteratioal s UN Committee participated itesively i the itergovermetal egotiatios (IGNs) held for 1-2 weeks each moth from Jauary to July util the fial documet was ready. Sudays before the IGNs were reserved for WMG strategy sessios ad coferece calls. It is the largest Zota Committee, with 16 members, divided ito four teams: New York at UN Headquarters; Geeva at the UN Office i Geeva; Viea at the UN office i Viea; ad Paris at UNESCO. The Committee has developed a coordiated pla for the bieium, which each team is followig. Each team also has a leader, who coordiates the work of the team. But the major chage i the work itself has bee to reach out to our district committee chairme through a series of coferece calls that bega i April. Subjects have icluded Beijig+20, the Post-2015 Developmet Ageda, the work of the Viea team o traffickig ad illegal activity, huma rights, ad violece agaist wome. Zota s impact has bee much more sigificat because of the chage i the work itself: more emphasis o meetig ad workig with decisio-makers, i.e. Ambassadors ad Natioal Missios. Team members meet with govermet represetatives from the coutries where we have fuded projects, with represetatives i coutries where our Board members reside, ad with other iterested parties that relate to our work. 7 VIENNA Igeborg Geyer heads the team i Viea with team members, Barbara Devi, Evelie Hejlek ad Eva-Maria Kodek-Werba. The team moitors the UN s work o traffickig ad illegal activities. I additio, Barbara coducted a study of the Istabul Covetio, ow i effect via the Coucil of Europe, ad the Palermo Protocol, which is used extesively by orgaizatios fightig huma traffickig. Both are available o the ZI website. PARIS The Paris team, headed by Ursula Bouchard, icludes Jaie N Daiye, Moique Veret, ad Jacquelie Besard. While the work at UNESCO is chagig, the Paris team is becomig acquaited with the rest of the UN work as well. COP21 will be held i Paris it is expected to be the largest meetig of govermets ever held to address climate chage ad the Paris team will be there. Their job is to get UNESCO back o track to address wome s issues! GENEVA WE ARE PRIMARILY LOOKING FOR MEMBERS WITH EXPERTISE IN: Ecoomy Statistics Geder Eviromet Medicie Educatio Sciece Techology & Iovatio Simoe Ovart (Geeva) was just elected as Presidet of the NGO Committee o the Status of Wome i Geeva. I November 2014, she co-chaired a highly successful meetig of NGOs just prior to the Europea ad North America Regioal Meetig o Beijig +20. I this ew post, which she holds as a represetative of ZI, she will be resposible for brigig the cocers of all NGOs together to commuicate with govermet officials ad agecy persoel about mutual cocers for all NGO members. Els Va Wickel, ewly appoited i Geeva, recetly atteded the Iteratioal Labour Coferece, which addressed a umber of issues for ZI. For example, there is a higher employmet of me versus wome, because wome make up the majority of upaid family labour ad o-stadard forms of labour, with a geder pay gap that remais 20 percet or higher. 8 BRIDGING BORDERS: Zota e-clubs Go Global Chagig demographics ad icreasig demads o people s time are challegig membership orgaizatios, like Zota, to recruit ad retai members. I 2012, i respose to these challeges, the Zota Iteratioal Covetio approved e-clubs as a alterative to the traditioal club model. The goal was to expad membership opportuities for idividuals who reside i geographic areas where o Zota clubs exist ad to eable busy or trasiet professioals to joi Zota or maitai their Zota membership eve as their persoal circumstaces chage. Sice the, seve e-clubs have chartered o four cotiets with more i formatio. We asked the existig e-clubs to share some isights ito the successes ad challeges they have faced as they lear to do Zota busiess ad egage i service ad advocacy outside the traditioal club model. ZONTA INTERNATIONAL S FIRST E-CLUB: ZONTA E-CLUB OF URUGUAY 1 (REGION SOUTH AMERICA) Fouded by a group of frieds ad family members, the Zota e-club of Uruguay 1 was the first e-club to charter i Zota Iteratioal. The club is still growig with a focus o youg people who are more comfortable with Iteret commuicatios, social etworkig, virtual meetigs ad webiars. The club coducts its meetigs oce a moth via Facebook, which has also prove to be a useful tool for membership recruitmet. All Zota busiess is coducted i Spaish. Like a traditioal Zota club, service ad advocacy are still a essetial part of the e-club s activities. The club has implemeted a umber of projects, icludig a campaig to prevet huma traffickig, which has utilized the Iteret, commuity outreach, workshops, cofereces ad a media campaig. As part of the Zota Says NO to Violece agaist Wome campaig, the club developed ad hosted a trek ru with orage ribbos ad a poster campaig for elemetary ad secodary schools for the Iteratioal Day for the Elimiatio of Violece Agaist Wome. 8 THE ZONTIAN NOVEMBER 2015

Naturally, we also meet face-to-face, but officially oly twice a year. FIRST EUROPEAN ZONTA E-CLUB ESTABLISHED IN FINLAND I Jue 2015, the first Europea e-club was established i Filad. The club curretly has 21 members represetig various professios from differet parts of Filad; however, members from other coutries are welcome to joi as well. Membership recruitmet is ot tied to a specific time or place but happes primarily via social media ad the web. Meetigs are held o the Adobe Coect platform, which is both robust ad easy to use. The system has to be pleasat to use so that meetigs ad their cotet create a rich experiece for all the participats, says Erja Lidholm, Vice Presidet for Zota e-club of Filad. Lidholm says the club is plaig to ivite guest speakers for mothly meetigs, icludig members of parliamet as well as specialists ad experts i differet areas. The club has its ow Facebook page where people ca follow activities ad uses Twitter ad WordPress. A ewsletter, icludig topics discussed i meetigs, recordigs ad other curret ews from Filad ad elsewhere, is published ad distributed mothly. We ca reach each other quickly sice the issues ca be distributed olie, ad if ecessary, eve durig the holidays which ormally teds to be a quiet period for the traditioal clubs. Social media also helps our members get to kow each other i a deeper way buildig upo our group cohesio, says Tarja Hopeakagas, the ew Presidet of Zota e-club of Filad. Face-to-face workshops, orgaized durig the sprig ad autum, decide o strategy ad aual plas ad select the board ad other officers of the club. All other activities take place olie ad via social media. ZONTAE-CLUBOFSILICONVALLEY: TACKLING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE To covey the serious missio of Zota while havig fu, the Zota e-club of Silico Valley ivites members to serve ad advocate through ejoyable club activities. Two prime examples are the club s popular summer Burger Beefit ad its PASS It O football party challege. Everyoe likes a summer afteroo spet relaxig with frieds. The e-club of Silico Valley s aual Burger Beefit is a low cost ad big fu way to raise fuds for the club s scholarships ad favorite oprofits. Members show up casual i shorts ad t-shirts with their families ad eighbors ad spread the word about Zota's missio ad projects. The respose from attedees has bee very geerous. The club s ewest project, timed to coicide with the Natioal Football League (NFL) seaso ad to peak with the Super Bowl i February 2016, is the club s "PASS it o" campaig. The club will make, promote ad sell its ow Football Party Advocacy Pack to other Zota districts ad Zota clubs to make it easy ad fu to advocate agaist domestic violece ad huma traffickig ofte associated with professioal sports. The goal is to challege Zotias to post their views o ad through social media etworks. The key is to be parters i advocacy while still havig fu. The club s football party pack cotais iformatioal hadouts, a specially imprited foam football, "how to" guides for social media eophytes ad eve sack recipes. With its recruitmet efforts goig well, the club is focused o retetio ad is keepig members egaged by ivolvig them i committees ad delegatig specific tasks related to each member s professio. As a ewly charted club, the club has decided to prioritize ad focus o service ad advocacy projects directly aliged to the goals of District 17. For its very first service project, the club will joi its SOM clubs, the Zota Club of Madaluyog Sa Jua ad the Zota Club of Madaluyoug, for a symposium o teeage pregacy ad early marriage. They are also explorig a opportuity to collaborate with Keds Philippies for a ew campaig, Ladies First, ad will actively participate ad cotribute to the Zota Says NO to Violece agaist Wome Walk, which will be held i Maila. ZONTAE-CLUBOFUSA1 The Zota e-club of USA 1 foud that persoal recruitmet is still the best ad most reliable method for recruitig ew members. Club members start by ivitig someoe to LIKE the e-club s page o Facebook. Sice the club posts updates 3-4 times a week, the prospect gets to see pictures ad updates from ZI, Zota Says NO to Violece agaist Wome, the UN ad other wome s orgaizatios. After a few moths of observatios, the club ivites a prospective member to sit i o oe of its virtual meetigs. There they get to "meet" other members ad liste to a preseter o a topic relevat to Zota's missio. Aother successful membership recruitmet tool is hoorig someoe o Iteratioal Wome's Day with a virtual Yellow Rose. The omiatios are doe i February, ad members are asked to make a doatio to the e-club s scholarship fud whe omiatig someoe. The e-club has received omiatios from aroud the U.S. ad raised close to US$500 this year. Retetio is all about ivolvemet. The more ivolved, the more likely the perso will reew. New club members are asked to give a short presetatio o a topic of iterest to them. For example, the club has a accomplished pilot ad author, who spoke durig Amelia Earhart Moth, while aother member who traveled to Nepal ad worked with a ati-traffickig orgaizatio spoke about her trip while educatig the club members o the situatio of girls i Nepal. 11 Highlights Highlights from Aroud the Zota World DISTRICT 1 This bieium, District 1 has dedicated time, fuds ad resources to proactively icrease membership. The Lieuteat Goveror, Area Directors ad I are makig frequet visits to clubs. We recetly held our first biaual presidet s retreat for curret ad icomig club presidets. This day of traiig focuses o topics such as coflict resolutio, protocol, commuicatio, root cause aalysis, ad utilizig the vast resources available o the District ad Zota Iteratioal websites. DISTRICT 2 District 2 started the bieium with covictio, commitmet ad courage. Board members, district committee chairme, club presidets ad treasurers set the toe by steppig up to commuicatio, educatio ad leadership with a retreat i August 2014 ad rejuveated their commitmet at sprig area workshops. We are proud of the may service projects completed by our clubs. Advocacy was at our district's forefrot with our visit to the UN ad our clubs 16 Days of Activism activities. As we cotiue with Covictio, Commitmet ad Courage, our future looks bright with a ew Aubur Z Club ad a ispirig district coferece. DISTRICT 3 I March, District 3 welcomed Zotias from aroud the world to New York City for UN ad NGO meetigs o wome's 1 4 educatio, health, rights ad justice durig the Commissio o the Status of Wome. District 3 has three clubs i formatio ad two additioal clubs poised to lauch formatio activities, ad we look forward to several club charter ceremoies i The District 3 website was completely refreshed this sprig. DISTRICT 4 District 4 is very proud of our members dedicatio as they Focus Forward with Covictio, Commitmet ad Courage. The Board ad committee chairme set the toe from the September retreat to the three area workshops. Our visit to the UN i November, followed by the 16 Days of Activism, set the advocacy path for the District. Iteratioal Wome s Day/Rose Day programs were also a highlight. From ispirig speakers to Meetig o the Bridge, District 4 Zotias were at the forefrot. We are also proud that the District Advocacy/Service Poster Project has bee lauched. Our advocacy committee has distributed several domestic violece tools icludig a call to actio challegig the NFL to take a stroger stad, audio PSAs ad videos, Zota Says NO billboards, a film trailer for the documetary The Hutig Groud, a positio paper ad a webiar. I am so proud of District 5 ad I look forward to seeig what we will do i the comig moths. DISTRICT 6 District 6 clubs empower wome through impactful missio-focused programs ad parterships that create icreased commuity visibility. Dr. Kimberly Eico Smith, a co-ivestigator ad deputy project scietist for the groudbreakig New Horizos Pluto fly-by missio, is a former Amelia Earhart Fellow. I light of the attetio she ad her team have received, we thought it a good time to catch up with the NASA astrophysicist. Whatorwhofirstispiredyoutowat to become ivolved i aerospace? It was ever ay specific perso who ispired me to get ivolved i aerospace. I had always, as far back as I ca remember, bee a curious learer, watig to kow everythig about the world aroud me. I asked may questios ad do recall may times whe teachers got tired of me askig questios. I remaied persistet watig to lear, ad my best teachers were those who foud creative ways to keep my "ethusiasm for learig" egaged. Most treasured of all, were three teachers whose ecouragemet got me through some self-doubt times: seveth grade, high school sophomore year, ad secod year udergraduate. My childhood dream was to become a astroaut, ad it is a goal I still strive for today. To me, a astroaut is the embodimet of scietist, egieer, explorer, ambassador, teacher-all professios I admire. To be hoest, with the exceptio of my latest space project, the New Horizos Pluto fly-by missio, I still am maily the oe or "oe of two" wome i a room. Ivited wome speakers at cofereces are still very much a miority. I am though highly ecouraged that I am seeig more wome at the professioal cofereces, i graduate studet ad postdoctoral positios, ad hearig about arragemets for family eeds, which i 1997, were pretty o-existet. We still have a log way to go with how we go about beig more iclusive i our work, for ot just wome, but others from differet experiece bases, ages, cultural backgrouds, disabilities, etc. Our choice of laguage ca ofte be exclusive. I immediately see words like "maed space exploratio" ad "umaed spacecraft" ad feel excluded. Why ot "huma spaceflight" ad "robotic spacecraft"? I still ofte am addressed i a group with "Getleme, let's..." ad our laguage is predomiately "he" i coversatio. We also eed to ot perpetuate stereotypical imagery i our coversatios ad photos. Just recetly, with regards to wome specifically i the sciece ad egieerig workforce, we've see examples o social media with #GirlsWithToys ad #distractiglysexy as resposes to iappropriate commets made by two male seior scietists. These remid us that eve today, wome i the scieces & egieerig fields work i eviromets where they are ot valued first for their skills ad cotributios. It is our laguage that shapes us. Whe we pay more attetio to what we say ad use iclusive laguage, we ca be creatig opportuities ad collaboratios istead of isultig, bullyig, ad ostracizig others. As a scietist, what has bee your greatest achievemet or advacemet withi your career? A few years ago I played a part i a iovative missio to study the Moo as part of a grader visio to retur to the Moo someday with more robotic ad huma explorers. The missio ot oly chaged a scietific uderstadig of the moo, but also eabled a differet way to desig ad execute a space missio, the latter I wish we were doig more today. The missio was called the Luar Crater Observatio ad Sesig Satellite (LCROSS, for short). I had bee so used to the way we desig oe-off uique space missios to push sciece boudaries that I had ot eve thought about dedicated smaller scoped oes to address specific key questios as part of a larger sciece ad exploratio visio. We do eed both kids of missios as they address differet eeds. The results from the successful LCROSS missio told us there is water i the form of water ice o the moo ad that, scietifically, told us about somethig ew i the history of our solar system. LCROSS showed how ot oly how sciece eables exploratio, but how exploratio ehaces sciece, as LCROSS had bee fuded primarily with a exploratio goal: could humas live sustaiably o the moo someday? My part was small but ifluetial as I created a ew way to develop a scietific payload based o modified commercial off the shelf (COTS) parts. This allowed a lower cost, ad equally importat, shorter developmet cycle, to get a space missio built i uder two years, usig the latest i techology. With my previous experiece o custom-built oe-of-a-kid spacecraft, I would ot have evisioed turig the space missio cocept process o its head ad goig about it i a differet maer. 20 THE ZONTIAN NOVEMBER 2015
