1 28th Annual Child Welfare Workshop Tuesday, April 19, :15 am Our Children, Our Community (7:15 am - 8:15 am Registration Check-in, Continental Breakfast, Exhibits & Networking) Hager Hall Convention & Event Center 901 Dual Highway, Hagerstown, MD The 2016 Child Welfare Workshop Planning Committee is very proud to once again offer an outstanding selection of topics specifically designed to provide practical, meaningful and current information about the welfare of our youth to individuals who work with Our Children in Our Community. This year s agenda will provide a total of ten different topics to choose from. The Workshop will provide a certificate of completion for five educational hours and continuing education credits for the professionals listed below for those who attend the full workshop. Continuing Education Credits Note: To receive a certificate of completion and continuing education credits, attendees must be on time and attend 100% of the program. Partial credit will not be awarded. Maryland Social Workers: Brook Lane is an approved sponsor of the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners for continuing education credits for licensed social workers in Maryland. Brook Lane is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. Program will provide 5.0 credit hours of Category I continuing education; partial credit will not be awarded. Maryland Psychologists: The Maryland State Board of Examiners for Psychologists will accept CE hours provided by Brook Lane, an approved CE sponsor of the MD Board of Social Work Examiners. Program will provide 5.0 credit hours; partial credit will not be awarded. Counselors/Therapists: Brook Lane Health Services has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP #5452. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Brook Lane is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. This program will provide 5 clock hours; partial credit will not be awarded. Other Disciplines seeking documentation of contact hours for submission of CEUs as an individual: A certificate of completion noting five educational/contact hours will be provided to those who attend 100% of the program. Gillece, PhD., is the project director for SAMHSA s National Center for Trauma-Informed Care (NCTIC). She works across agencies and promotes the use of trauma informed care in multiple settings including mental health, substance abuse, adult and juvenile justice and homeless services. She has over 30 years of experience working in behavioral health, the last 17 years have been dedicated to trauma. Define trauma-informed care; Discuss the connection between childhood trauma and adverse physical and behavioral outcomes; Discuss how the trauma-informed approach to care benefits the individual; Implement a trauma-informed approach in working with children and adolescents. Choosing Sessions Following the General Session you will have the opportunity to choose from a number of topics within three different Sessions (see right). Make your selections on the Workshop Registration Form. Choose carefully to avoid duplicating topics. Using Play Therapy Techniques to Reach Kids Terri Lancaster, MA, NCC, LCPC, RPT-S, is the outpatient program manager at The Mental Health Center of Western Maryland. She is a registered play therapist-supervisor and an active member of the Association for Play Therapy. She has over 20 years of experience working with children, families and community mental health. Outline the overall objectives of play therapy; Discuss four basic play therapy skills for working with children; Use basic play therapy techniques to help children build a better sense of self; Evaluate outcomes for particular play therapy techniques. Jim Robison is a member of the Hagerstown Police Department (HPD) and is currently assigned to the Washington County Narcotics Task Force. He has been a police officer for 21 years and has worked as a member of the patrol division, Street Crime Unit and served as supervisor for the HPD s Street Crime Unit from Sgt. Robison has been a member of the Narcotics Task Force since Note: This session does not Name some of the common synthetic drugs being abused locally; meet NBCC s criteria for CE Outline behavioral indicators of synthetic drug use; credit for counselors. Discuss the physical signs and symptoms of synthetic drug use; Develop educational strategies to help prevent the use of synthetic drugs among children/ Foster Care Through the Eyes of a Teen Tammie Campher, LCSW-C, is a child welfare supervisor with Washington County DSS. She has over 20 years of experience in the family services field, the last five as a Family Finder where she assists youth in foster care to identify and reconnect with their families in an effort to develop and strengthen lifelong connections. Stephanie Paul, BA is an independent living coordinator for Washington County DSS. Stephanie collaborates with foster care staff, community service providers, local businesses and families to build a supportive network for foster youth transitioning into adulthood. Discuss the unique mental health and juvenile justice challenges experienced by teens in foster care; Identify intervention strategies for improved problem-solving and coping skills for youth in foster care; Explain the mental health challenges related to rebuilding relationships with biological parents/siblings; Learn strategies to help youth with the process of transitioning from foster care to adulthood. Children and Adolescents of Substance Abusing Parents Donna Fogle, LCSW-C, is an outpatient therapist at Brook Lane s North Village location. She has over 28 years of experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders, 13 of those working with teens as a program coordinator at Catoctin Summit Adolescent Program (CSAP). She is a member of the Integrated Systems of Care subcommittee of the Washington Co. Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council. Explain the impact of parental substance abuse on children/adolescents; Outline the biological, psychological, behavioral, and social consequences of alcohol/drug exposure; Use effective interventions to help children/adolescents of substance abusing parents cope; Discuss treatment options to help children/adolescents of substance abusing parents. The Neurological Impact of Trauma on the Developing Brain Brian R. Sims, MD, is a psychiatrist and the senior director of medical and behavioral health for the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors. Dr. Sims is also a consultant for the National Center for Trauma-Informed Care. He has a particular interest in the neurological impact of trauma on the developing brain. Discuss the effects of maltreatment on the stress response system; Explain the impact of trauma and abuse on brain development; Discuss how early trauma often correlates with adult dysfunction; Use a trauma-informed approach in working with children/adolescents.
5 Child Welfare Workshop Agenda - Tuesday, April 19, 2016 Expressive Therapy: Drawing Stronger Crystal Ballroom Myers Berkeley Track F Track K Track H Track M Track J Julie Wood Merchant, MA, LCPAT, ATR-BC, is a licensed clinical professional art therapist and a registered and board certified art therapist with over 30 years of experience in the field of behavioral health. She is founder and director of Kids Like Us, a group counseling program for youth adversely impacted by the substance use disorder of a parent/caregiver or close family member. This no-cost program focuses on building resiliency, self-worth, coping skills, social skills, and preventing substance abuse for children grades 4 8. Discuss the impact of parental/caregiver substance use disorders on the biological, psychological and social experiences of children; Discuss how the use of art therapy and group counseling can help increase protective factors in children; Utilize expressive art to facilitate healing and recovery. Behind Closed Doors: Intimate Partner Violence and its Effect on Children Courtney Dowding, LCSW and Jamie Harrison, LGSW are therapists with Citizens Assisting and Sheltering the Abused, Inc. (CASA), a private, non-profit organization that provides professional support services to people who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault/abuse, and rape. Both Courtney and Jamie provide counseling services to adult individuals who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Discuss the emotional and psychological effects of family violence on child development; Identify behavioral indicators of potential violence in the home; Employ at least two appropriate interventions for the child impacted by family violence. Child Maltreatment: A Case Study in Intervention Michael Smith, LCSW-C, clinical manager, Meritus Behavioral Health Services Barbara Shevokas, LCSW-C, child welfare supervisor, Washington County Department of Social Services Tawnya Hurley, LCPC, program manager, child/adolescent services, Potomac Case Management, Inc. Describe the initial evaluation process for possible child abuse and neglect; Outline key functions of the investigation process; Explain factors that influence decision-making with possible child abuse/neglect cases; Describe the concept of a family-friendly approach to treatment; Discuss the benefits of multidisciplinary teams in the assessment process; Develop strategies for responding to varying types of child abuse and neglect. Crystal Ballroom Track O Keeping Clinical, Ethical & Legal Balance When Working with Children J. Emmet Burke, PhD, JD, is the clinical director and admitting psychologist at Brook Lane where he is responsible for the admission, evaluation and supervision of treatment of children & adolescents. He holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Catholic University & a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law. Session will provide 1.25 hours of CE credit Explain the legal rights of minors and the legal rights of parents; in ethics, law & Differentiate between legal custody, legal guardianship and physical custody; professional conduct Discuss joint legal custody and the treatment of children/adolescents; Develop risk management strategies to limit malpractice and licensing board liability.
