2 MOOSE TALES Page 3 September has been a tough month Brothers. Our Circle has been broken and we will honor our departed brother Bill Hines on October 14th. Hurricane Irma had some of you on the run, and some of us hunkering down trying to make our families feel as safe as we could. Some had to deal with no power and prayed for things that we take for granted like hot showers.. The district meet had to be cancelled for the first time in my memory. There were many empty seats at the State Convention and lots of stories about lodges being damaged but I'm glad some of my brothers and I were able to attend a couple of meetings in spite of being storm weary. But guess what??? We survived! We survived because we are united in fraternity and we were able to assist our members and families in need bye offering each other social, moral, and physical support I stand moose proud of our lodge and you should all be proud of yourselves!! I encourage you to keep the faith that better times are ahead and remember to support your Lodge, Mooseheart, Moosehaven, and our community. A big thank you to the Moose Lodge for providing shelter for all of our Moose members during hurricane Irma. Thanks to everyone who brought in food for our members during this time of need. It s great to know our Lodge supports our members. Thank you, Lynn Hall for cooking the monthly Women of the Moose meal for September. On October 14, 2017 there is a Celebration of Life for Bill Hines. A donation of food would be appreciated. Signup sheet is on the board at our Lodge. It is always sad when we lose a member. October 27, 2017 is our Halloween party. There will be a costume contest, 50/50, Chinese Treat or Trick auction, and many other activities. The Women of the Moose will provide a meal of goulash, salad and bread from 6 8 pm. Come join us for this fun night! The T-shirt s have arrived! The men s are grey and the ladies are pink, the cost is $15.00 (that includes tax). Support our Lodge and get one today! Thank you Gibby Fletcher Senior Regent God bless Mooseheart Fraternally,. 5 MOOSE TALES Page 5 Mooseheart Enter to Learn. True stories of two families paths to Mooseheart. 5 Teri grew up with a troubled single mother and several half-siblings. Her mother, Rita, was mean and neglected her basic needs. As a teenager, Teri began a part-time job to earn her own money and Rita became involved with one of Teri s teenage co-workers. Teri fell for this co-worker too, and they conceived a child. News of the pregnancy led to a fight and when the dust cleared, Teri and her siblings were placed in foster care. Eddie was born to Teri while in foster care. By the time of Eddie s birth the child s father was no longer in the picture. Only 17, Teri was a single mother. While in foster care, Teri developed some key relationships with caring adults who mentored her and she proved to be a very successful retail employee. By the time Eddie was 4, Teri had her own apartment and adopted two of her younger siblings. Teri married a professional man and moved across country with her children to join him and his daughter. The demands of a blended family took it toll on the young marriage, and as things declined, she received news she was pregnant again. The pressures of a failing marriage, four children and a pregnancy proved to be overwhelming for Teri, who aborted the pregnancy. Bitterness set in on Teri who grew hatful and aggressive towards her husband. As the marriage ended, Teri began partying with friends, and found herself homeless. After several other moves, a family that had befriended her during her years in foster care helped Teri get back on her feet and told her about Mooseheart. Teri s youngest child, Eddie, is now a welcome member of the Mooseheart community...leave to Serve After a messy divorce shattered his family, Bernd found himself emotionally and physically exhausted as he single-handedly tended to the care of fur growing boys. Although he earned a good living, the demands of his business left his sons lacking the supervision they needed on a daily basis. With the eldest brother on his way to college, Bernd searched for opportunities and learned about Mooseheart. On August 15, 2008, 15 year-old Jordan Holler arrived at Mooseheart with his two younger brothers, Jordan recalls that the move from Colorado to Mooseheart was quite a culture shock. Growing up in rural surroundings, and having very little exposure to people from other backgrounds and cultures, Jordan was nervous about making fiends. Jordan s anxiety dissipated as he immersed in Mooseheart life. Before long Jordan was involved in Mooseheart sports and excelled as an academic standout. Looking back, Jordan insists that his most enjoyable times at Mooseheart were campus visits from the dedicated Moose members on occasions like Wisconsin Tree Lighting and other state sponsored days. After graduation in 2011, Jordan made the choice to pursue medicine as his career. Jordan utilized his Mooseheart scholarship and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology from the University of Illinois. He is employed as a research assistance at his alma matter. He maintains weekly involvement in a free clinic to serve individuals who do not have health insurance. In his application to medical school Jordan said, Mooseheart s staff dedicated their lives to helping children, advocating for us in our most critical time of need. There, I was given my first access to health care, from vaccinations to knee surgery. Over time, my class mates and the staff became an extension of my family. While we all came from different cultural backgrounds, we shared a common upbringing. Reflecting back, the care I received at Mooseheart ultimately compelled me to pursue a career in medicine. Moreover, I was inspired to become a physician who can one day treat patients similar to my former classmates, my younger self, and others who do not who do not have access to quality healthcare. This fall, Jordan will take his huge heart to the West Coast and the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, where he will pursue his passion to serve the underserved through medicine.

9 MOOSE TALES Page 8 THE NEW MOOSE EXPERIENCE Two years ago in Nashville, Moose International launched the beginnings of The New Moose Experience, an as-yet undefined project that would look to engage the next generation of families and individuals with whom we have had limited success in attracting as members. This year in St. Louis, that vision was more refined, yet not quite ready to be introduced to the membership as additional details needed to be solidified. An exciting program had emerged from a myriad of initial proposals, but there was a tremendous amount of research, testing and planning still needed to make it a reality. I want to share with you an excerpt about this new experience from my message to those in attendance at the St. Louis Convention The hardest thing for you and me to grasp is that it will not have anything to do with your Lodge or Chapter. This is something completely innovative, yet has Moose DNA threaded through it. This new Moose experience will be under the Umbrella of our organization. It s lifeblood will be Moose. And realizing that Millennials, as a whole, are just not interested in joining Lodges, this experience has to be different. And it will be different. It will be a new brand that has Moose at its foundation. Just as the lodges are the experience that is hallmark and preference of all of us in this hall. This new Moose experience for Millennials will be their unique way of coming together. And the timing is right. Millennial families are seeking a way to come together. A way to come together that compliments and supports their unique lifestyles that blend work play learning and giving into a singular day to day, even hour to hour life as a integral and supportive community. This investment into the future of our Moose organization, our fraternal mission and into the lives of future generations is something that only Moose can own. It is three distinct lines of business under one roof, meeting the needs of Millennial parents, today s child and our local communities. In this New Moose Experience you will find 1. A state-of-the-art flexible workspace environment available to independent workers and small businesses that desire a flexible and convenient workplace for themselves and/or their employees. Our hospitalityfirst focus generates a dynamic and creative work environment that brings leaders and innovators together under one roof. 2. A unique Moose-branded, flexible learning-oriented childcare experience designed to accommodate the variable schedules of parents while delivering a high-quality early childhood education experience that instills the values Moose cares about and are found at Mooseheart caring for others in need, social responsibility, and community contribution. 3. A comfortable, casual social space with intentionally family-focused food and beverage. Serving highquality, healthy foods at all parts of the day that meet the needs of today s modern family. Whether the need is for a quick-serve breakfast, a more relaxed lunch or a ready-made family dinner to take home, we have it covered. 4. To compliment all three lines of business, Tommy Moose will lead our development of Kid Citizens. A space where children and their parents live out their values through service programs and initiatives that benefit the local community and raise funds for Mooseheart. This is just a brief description of the program. For additional information about the New Moose Experience please refer to the following documents: New Moose Experience Overview and our FAQ Sheet. This is truly an exciting time to be a Moose! We are expanding our network and setting ourselves up to be positive community influencers for centuries to come. In addition, we are opening up another avenue of financial support for our children at Mooseheart. Thank you in advance for your continued support and the dedication you provide our Fraternity. Without you, we would not be in position to invest in such an ambitious program that looks out long-term for the future of our fraternal mission. I hope you ll agree that for the longevity of the organization, this additional path makes sense and contains just the right amount of Lodgic to succeed! Sincerely and fraternally, Scott D. Hart Director General 9
