Approval of last meeting minutes - Dale Linda asked for clarification of Item 4 regarding the motions and votes on membership. She also moved that the names of board members be included on all votes. Motion seconded by Gary and approved unanimously. Minutes approved as revised with names of members voting for and against the motions in Item Treasurer's Report - Gretchen No change from last month s report. Gretchen stated that she will prepare an updated report as soon as she receives the bank statement. 3. Adopt-A-Park Committee - Linda The City has posted an Adopt-A-Park sign at Los Altos. Team Virgie cleaned the park last month. Team Linda will do so in March, and will repair the loose fence on the east side. Linda has requested that the east wall be painted to make it look better, and volunteered her team to do the work if the City provides the paint. Approval has not yet been received. 4. Venues Committee - Gary A meeting has been scheduled for all venue coordinators, and board members if interested, at Los Duranes on March 10 at 12:30 pm to go over areas of difficulty and try to work out solutions. New/expanded venues: On the East side, Roosevelt will be open mornings during the summer, with Hoover as back-up for days. On the West side, Los Duranes is opening on Monday evenings from 6-7:45 pm starting March 2. Negotiations are under way for LBJ Middle School for days (not summer); they would like people to volunteer to teach pickleball to kids after school. South Valley Community Center may be available for one court after junior high wrestling program. Ray Padilla is working with Barelas Community Center for 3 courts, 2 days a week from 9-11 or Mesa Verde Community Center is open to discussion. Another possible location for outdoor courts is Columbus Park, 2 courts with lights. is ongoing about adding 2 more outdoor courts at Hoffman Park. 5. Participation Numbers for January - Larry Venue coordinators send <60 and 60+ attendance numbers to Virgie and Rosalie for reporting to Senior Affairs. There was discussion regarding reporting of attendance at outdoor venues where there are no venue coordinators. It was suggested to ask people who play at various parks, including Los Altos, to send numbers to Virgie and Rosalie for reporting. Another suggestion from the audience was that we develop a smart phone app that individuals could use to report their attendance. Page1

Permanent Courts Linda and Larry Linda and Larry have a meeting scheduled with Councilor Don Harris on Tuesday, February 24 regarding the permanent pickleball courts. 7. March Tournament - Gary A general has gone out to announce the March Tournament. Singles will be held on March 27, and all doubles (men s, women s and mixed) will be on the 28 th. This is the qualifying tournament for the NM Senior Games. Mo and Randy Wright, Belinda and Shirley Johnson will be running the tournament. The NM Games will be held the 3 rd week of September. The Board will work on getting a Tournament Committee together. Linda prepared a list of survey respondents who volunteered to help with tournaments. Gary will give the list to Mo and Randy for followup. Action Items Person Responsible Deadline Give list of potential volunteers to Mo and Randy for follow-up Gary Feb Logo Contest - Linda The logo contest opened at the end of January and closed on February submissions were received from 12 people. Linda will send all submissions to Dale for distribution to the Board for review prior to voting at the next meeting. Action Items Person Responsible Deadline Send all submissions to Dale Linda ASAP Dale prepare submissions for review and send to Larry Dale Feb New Business Drill Sessions at RG Sanchez - Linda 10. Budget - Larry Linda scheduled 2 experimental drill sessions on Wednesday mornings at Raymond G Sanchez Center. 15 people showed up for the Feb 18 session, along with 2 walk-ins who stayed to watch. Linda learned to limit the sessions to participants. Participants enjoyed the sessions. It was noted that these sessions must be open to anyone at any skill level. Requests have come in for evening and weekend drill sessions, and one specific request for drills before the March tournament. It was suggested that distributions include suggestion that people share the information with friends who do not have . Volunteers are needed to run other drill sessions, as Linda travels to tournaments and is not always available. Ray P. indicated that he had volunteered to help when the Linda s concept was first announced, and reiterated his offer. Linda thanked him but said her drills were not the same as his training, and she was looking for others to volunteer. It was suggested that Linda train these volunteer drill instructors or In order to do club business, Larry asked the Board project costs and revenues for the year. Gretchen will head a committee to work out a budget. One question that came up was if people want to participant in specific events, should the club pay for the event or the participants? Larry indicated that dues are designed so people who pay get something for those monies. 11. Balls/Equipment Inventory and Current Needs Gary has done an inventory of current club property (attached to these minutes). The Club will supply outdoor balls for Paradise Hills and for Los Altos on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am noon. Gretchen will buy 15 dozen outdoor balls at $18 per dozen from Onix Sports, to be delivered to Larry. An advisory committee member will try to get signage for Los Altos on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am noon as Club times. At other times, players will use their own balls. Page2

3 ABQ Pickleball Club February, 2015 Minutes 14. Process for requesting funds - Larry Can Board members make expenditures without asking the Board for money? If so, how much? Linda moved that Board members be allowed to request reimbursement for up to $50 without going through the Board in advance. Larry seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Examples of expenditures by Board members: Drills continue with other interested instructors and have a separate supply of balls for drills. Need 16 balls per courts; these do not have to be pristine. Ladders now structured with different partners for each game, with each player s results recorded individually to determine final ranking. Might want to have prizes for top places. If a community member wants to do an event or propose an expenditure, they should present a budget with income and expenses to the Board in advance. 15. Open Question: If you got 108 surveys back, why did you go out and talk to people? Larry wanted to get a handle on what people think. He wants to be known in the community and let people know he is a working President who wants to grow pickleball in the Albuquerque area. He did a presentation at City Council, s met with Parks & Rec., etc. This all led to council commitment to pickleball and permanent courts. Adline noted that people want to play for recreation and exercise and want to feel welcome no matter their skill level. How is this all going to be coordinated? Larry notes that last year he had feedback from Los Altos that some people didn t feel welcome or felt intimidated. He organized a committee to help people feel welcome and help beginners to learn. Paradise Hills has 3 nets set up for beginner, intermediate and advanced players. Larry asked Linda Martellaro if it is working. She says the competitive court is nice, but sometimes people try to play on the 3.5 court and are not welcomed or allowed. Will the meeting with Don Harris tomorrow include asking what expenses might be asked from the Club for the new courts? Linda indicated that the bond money to come in will only be used to answer the drainage issue. Parks & Rec suggested we lobby our legislators for funds called outlying funds which requires a special complicated form as well as members writing to their representatives to vote for the outlying funds. Larry has heard from other clubs that their cities build the courts and the clubs contribure toward maintenance. If we start building a slush fund or kitty, we could participate in these things later on. Jim F. suggested our budget committee contact other clubs to see what issues the experience during periods of growth and how they handle them. Scott H. expressed some confusion concerning the references in the bylaws to membership, voting membership, etc. How do people get to be members if they don t pay dues? Dale pointed out that the bylaws require the Board to determine the dues for each year, but do not specify any amount, so the dues could be $0 or $20 or anything. At the last meeting, this Board voted 5-2 to have $0 dues at this time. John Brenna asked, What is this Board trying to do? Why should anyone want to be a member of this club? What do they get out of it? He suggests that once we figure it out, we should market the answer to the community, and people will want to be part of it. Larry indicated that some benefits would be: a) a sense of belonging, wanting to be part of it, helping it grow; they re in it for fun. b) social events, drill sessions. C) putting on our own events, etc. to help bring money into the city. John indicates he already gets all he wants for free and for the Department of Senior Affairs membership. When asked what benefits he would want from the club, he did not enumerate anything. Gary indicated that a large part of what the club provides for players is places to play and equipment to play with. It was suggested that the Board should continually let people know what the club has been doing and what it has accomplished. Scott D. and John B. stated that in order for us to be a club, people must have skin in the game. In other words, without dues there is no club. At this point, the meeting spun out of control. Those who want the club to be dues-paying continued to push their agenda despite the majority vote of the Board not to require dues at this time.
