2 Welcome to the third edition of The Jubilee Gazette. We are pleased to update you on the progress and successes of The Jubilee Academy this Spring term. We have: in-depth student news with pieces from students themselves; we have special messages from members of staff; and an update on important information and dates for next term. Students have settled well during a busy term of mock examinations. Our Out of Hours programme, offering students a variety of different activities, has seen a dramatic increase in student participation. We have had a successful Open Day in which our student ambassadors conducted themselves in an extremely professional manner, making us very proud. As well as our Open Day, we have hosted a successful Parent s Evening, Parental Workshops and a Drama theatre trip. 3 Student news Out of hours programme In January we introduced a loyalty scheme whereby students collect a stamp for every Out of Hours session they attend. This has been really successful and increased sign up for all of our sessions. Students have been enjoying the different sessions, including table tennis, Fifa games and Zumba. Parents evening Thank you to all those who attended our Parent s Evening on 12 th February. We really enjoy meeting with parents and discussing the children s progress and development. Thank you for all your feedback from our questionnaires too. Please see a snapshot below. Students who collected the most loyalty stamps were entered into a draw for a rewards trip. Well done to winners: Elhem, Josh, Keenan, Chloe, Zaki, Miki, Ashley, Hussein, Emma and Philip. The rewards trip is planned for after the Easter Holidays. 4 Open Day On 29 th January we hosted an Open Day. It was a great success and our Student Ambassadors did a fantastic job in promoting the school. The BTEC Performing Arts students performed a short piece - part improvised, part scripted performance on the theme of insomnia - that they have been working on in class. Our Year 11 Executive Ambassador, Philip Denu, gave our guests a powerful insight into his personal journey through education and how The Jubilee Academy is supporting him, as well as opening up opportunities beyond life at TJA. They were joined for the evening performance by KS3 student Joshua Spicer. The students used Sarah Kane 4.48 Psychosis as their stimulus. All students rose to the challenge and represented the school fantastically well. Well done to, Zaki Clarke (Year 11), Emma Taylor (Year 11), Chaney Doherty (Year 11), Chanice Clarke (Year 11) and Joshua Spicer (Year 9). TJA students had plenty of work on display for our guests to look at to appreciate the progress students are making. Emma Taylor (Year 11) presented the recent dress design that she produced in Textiles and shared her next steps, which will be to send products to Uganda for a children s charity. 4

5 Comic Relief Non Uniform Day On Friday 13 th March we supported Comic Relief with a non-uniform/ wear Red Nose Day. All the students really enjoyed it and we would like to thank you for your support. We raised 54 for Comic Relief. 6 Preparing for opportunities Year 11 students took part in our Preparing for Opportunities Day on Thursday 19 th March. Students dressed smartly and prepared for their interviews which were held with a representative from Harrow College and Groundwork. The day was a real success and provided students with a great opportunity to learn more about and prepare for interviews in the future. We were very pleased with how students conducted themselves. Woman in black theatre trip On the 17 th March, Year 11 Drama students enjoyed a visit to the theatre to watch The Woman in Black as part of their GCSE studies. Watching a live theatre production is a great learning experience which all the students really enjoyed. 6

7 GCSE Textiles Projects We are really proud of the work students have produced for their GSCE Textiles. Well done to Jimmy, Jordan, Chloe, Chanice and Aleks. Personal Exercise Programmes Our KS4 PE groups are currently completing their Personal Exercise Programmes. They have been monitoring their performance over a number of different methods of training such as circuit, interval and fartlek training. I m really impressed with how intense our PE groups have been working. Completing a Personal Exercise Programme is not easy. Our PE students will not only feel the benefit of their physical development from the six week programme but will experience improvement in their mental toughness too. 8 online safety guidance As a parent you ll know how important the Internet is to young people. They use it to learn, play, socialise and express themselves in all types of ways. This may be through sharing photos and videos, blogging and gaming. The technology children use in their daily lives can seem daunting. You might worry about the risks they can face online, such as bullying, contact from strangers, as well as the possibility of access to inappropriate or illegal content. To help them stay safe, it s important that you understand how your child uses the internet. See our simple checklist below, to protect them and decrease the risks: * Ask your child to show you the sites they use by doing so, your child is including you in their online life and social activity. Show an interest and take note of the names of their favourite sites. You can then re-visit them. * Ask your child to set their profile settings to private Social networking sites, such as Facebook, are used by children to share information, photos and just about everything they do! Encourage your child to set their privacy settings to private. They need to think about the information they post online as it could be copied and pasted anywhere, without their permission. * Ask your child about their online friends we know that people lie online about who they are and may create fake identities. It is very important children understand this. * Have you set appropriate parental controls on your child s computer, mobile and games console? Filters on computers and mobiles can prevent your child from viewing inappropriate and possibly illegal content. You can activate and change levels depending on your child s age and abilities. They can be free and easy to install. Call your service provider who will be happy to assist, or visit CEOP s parents' site for further information. * You know where to get help if you are concerned about your child s online safety The CEOP Safety Centre The CEOP Safety Centre provides access to a range of services. If you are concerned that an adult has made inappropriate contact with your child, you can report this directly to CEOP. You can also find help if you think your child is being bullied, or if you ve come across something on the internet which you think may be illegal. Ground Work Mentoring Sexual Health and Relationship Services Talk it out Counselling service Substance Misuse Support EIS & Ignite Stop Smoking Cessation Programme Exam Information Workshop On Thursday 19th March we held a session for all parents/carers who have children taking GCSE exams at The Jubilee Academy this summer. The workshop provided essential information, advice and guidance around exam timetables, revision techniques, resources and support. In addition to after school sessions, we are also running Easter Booster sessions on the 30 th & 31 st April. See our website for more details; /school-information/calendar/ Substance Misuse Workshop On Thursday 26th February guests from (ASK drugs and alcohol team) helped us to deliver an Awareness Workshop on Substance Misuse. The workshop aimed to equip parents/carers with the skills to spot the signs and symptoms of substance misuse, as well as highlight the dangers and consequences of substance misuse. Study Skills Study Skills sessions are helping students with exam preparation, covering studying techniques, time management, memory techniques and goal setting. Work experience Year 10 students will be experiencing life at work from Monday 8 th June 2015 Friday 12 th June. Examination dates External examinations for Year 11 will start on Monday 11 th May 2015 and run until Friday 22 nd May. Then begin again after half term on Monday 4 th June and run until Tuesday 16 th June All students sitting exams have received a personalised examination timetable. We recommend that you read and discuss the examination information with your son/daughter and ensure it is displayed prominently at home. 10
