1 North East River Yacht Club At The Peake of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone Member Newsletter February COMMODORE S REPORT Can you believe it? It s February already and only two months to go before we start tearing off the covers and preparing for our 2013 boating season! We just completed our inside workday for the club by painting the Commodore s Dining Room. What a team effort! I can t say thank you enough to all of the members who contributed their time, material and talent to make this more than a hoped for improvement. If you think the club looks better, let us know and be sure to say thanks to Vice Commodore Rick Hanson and Judy Murray for spear-heading this task together with the house committee. This has made a huge difference in the appearance of our clubhouse, which I am sure you will all appreciate. It will also help to bring in more outside functions. Weddings and events are profitable and help balance our books. If there is anyone you know who would like to book an event, please see April Conway or Suzanne Braun regarding bookings. As we move into the month of February, we can only hope for slightly warmer weather. As I write this article, it s been down to 11 degrees outside. It just makes me wish for the warm weather, the wind through the trees at the club, the club events and for summertime to come! It will be here sooner than you think. The February calendar is jam packed with events for our members. Whether it s the Dinner Theater, Birthday Anniversary Night, Three Sheets To The Wind or our Happy Hours, it s always a good time to visit your club to have fun. And, remember, if you have the opportunity to bring a friend, please do. This all helps the club. Your Board of Governors has been working hard to make the club a continued success. We ve spent long hours during our board meetings discussing ways to increase membership and best manage the club. Increasing our membership numbers will help make our finances so much easier to deal with. So, if you have a prospective member that you think would like to learn more about joining, have them contact Judy Murray. As many of you already know, I m always open to suggestions and ideas. I value your input and want to hear what you have to say. So, please contact me if you have something you want to discuss or suggest. And, I ll see you at the club! Commodore Mark Coffman

4 FROM THE VICE The House Committee, John & Judy Murray, Sue Hanson and I and members of NERYC got together and started the NERYC To Do List. Saturday, January 26 th we had an awesome turnout of members who came to the club and diligently worked all day putting a face lift on the Commodores Ballroom! It looks spectacular! I want to thank our Commodore, Mark Coffman for bringing the Dunkin Donuts and working hard painting the trim, and to the following members who also worked non-stop all day: John Cottage, Jon Fowler, Joanne Veater, Charles Paris, Cindy Hoffman, George & Suzanne Braun, Dailey & Jessica Tipton, Bob Gamble, Alex Reed Razzook, Bob Brechter, Ceil Keenan, Susan Andrews, Phil Gravatt and Bill Doyle -thank you for all your hard work. I appreciate your TIME & HELP! There are still numerous projects to be done at NERYC. I d like to accomplish a couple more projects before everyone gets too busy and has to start working on their boats. If you re interested in being part of the House & Garden Committee, please let me know, and Opening Day Weekend is just 14 weeks away. As we move closer to spring we will start to work on a few outdoor projects. One of which will be to make our picnic area more appealing and user friendly. One critical item that we will need to address is our lack of decent picnic tables. We would like to purchase new tables, but before we do I would like to see if anyone has a picnic table in their backyard they would like to donate. We will also welcome cash donations that we can put towards the purchase of a few new ones. Thanks and see everyone at the club in the very near future. Come check out the new paint job. V/C Rick Hanson FROM THE REAR The Calendar is now updated for 2013 and was uploaded to the website on December 10 th. It is a total of 13 calendars in one. Each one of the calendars can be turned on and off. This allows members to view only the types of events that interest them. There is also an agenda option that puts the calendar into a list format. Each Calendar is also color coded. If you click on an event, a detailed description of the event will pop up. The calendar is updated as changes are made and an goes out on the yahoo group informing the membership of these changes. Be sure to contact me with any additions/deletions/comments/ suggestions at Braun53@verizon.net. Don t forget to check out the calendar for some great events this month! January s birthday night was even more successful than December s. Casey Coleman was excellent as usual keeping everyone up dancing and singing till late. The restaurant was full for dinner. The 50/50 raised $180 with Kathy Wile winning the $90 pot. Congratulations Kathy! Special Thanks to David & Susan Andrews for their line dancing! After careful thought, there will be entertainment on February Birthday on Friday, Feb 8 th. We will be doing a Trivia Theme and we will have a DJ leading that effort with dancing in between. DON T FORGET the ship s store will be open for your pre-season purchases! MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Birthday night in March has been moved to the FIRST to avoid conflicts with other events. Live entertainment is confirmed for that evening. April Birthday night is confirmed with Carla DiGiacomo of Queen Green Band. She comes highly recommended as a real party starter and keeps people up dancing all night! I have Keith & Friends confirmed for the Margaritaville party. Updates to further entertainment bookings will be shared via and subsequent Waterlines. Keep your eyes open for new items in the Ship s Store. George & I met with a representative of the Larry Beck Company and we have some exciting samples coming in. We re continuing to refine the website offerings and the questionnaire will be out this week. PLEASE be sure to complete it so we can have the items you want in stock! The store will be open for your purchases this Saturday for the Murder Mystery and on February s birthday night. If I m not at the club, April will be happy to assist with your purchase. PLEASE make reservations for dinner any time you plan to come down. It really helps the restaurant be prepared. to serve you properly. Hope to see you all at the club for the amazing events this winter. R/C Suzanne Braun 4

7 FROM THE FLEET First, a hearty Welcome to the New Members of the club! I trust that everyone is staying warm during the deep winter doldrums freeze. As your Fleet Captain, I am happy to report that there are only 3 months left until our 2013 boating season begins! Since November, I have been acclimating to the Fleet Captain position. Besides attending our monthly Board of Governor meetings t and a couple Management Team meetings the last 3 months, I have talked to several folks familiar with operations of the club. Through meetings and discussion, I have developed a nice overview of our club s operation, infrastructure and financial model. One key observation that stands out is that our club is an operation whose inner workings are managed by a small paid staff and largely by a talented group of dedicated volunteers from many different backgrounds. Directly we, as members, all benefit from the contributions of this group. As we move into our new boating season, you will find many things in order at the club and this all happens through the hard work of volunteers, many times behind the scenes. If you do have opportunity, I d ask that you pass along a simple thanks to volunteers you visibly see or know are doing or have done something to make our club a better place. Because the work often is a thankless job I m sure it would be appreciated. More importantly, I d also ask that if you have a talent that can help support our club in any way to please share it and help where you can. Fundamentally, our club s success is highly dependent upon a healthy member base, slip holders, and volunteers who take care of many areas to help make it a success! On the Fleet front, I ve assessed our member fleet to better understand our club demographics, I ve continued planning for our Shakedown Cruise to Havre De Grace and the event at Bruce & Barbi Taylor s, and I ve continued researching options for our Memorial Day Cruise. Finally, January 27th, I, along with Rear Commodore Suzanne Braun and husband & George (Past Commodore 2006), Commodore Mark Coffman and my wife Cindy, represented NERYC at the Yacht Clubs of Maryland Fleet Captain s meeting and dinner at the Red Eye Yacht Club on Middle River (more on this in our next Waterline). Some 21 of 34 clubs attended the meeting and shared information on their upcoming events. On our fleet demographics I ve found that of our 133 current full members, there are 98 member owned boats located not only in our marina but other locations on the Chesapeake Bay. Of our total member owned boats, 34% are power and 66% are sail and boat lengths range in size from 18 to boats are under 34 and 24 over 34. Also, within our membership rolls, there are 67 youth members among us with a majority of them in the year old range. Backgrounds of our membership include Attorney s, Consultants of various type, professional Tradesman of various types, Insurance and Financial professionals, Technical professionals, Marketing professionals, Nurses, Pharmacists, Musicians, Salesman, and retirees to name a few. So what does this data say? Well, it says simply that we are a diverse population of members who share a common bond being part the sport of yachting. Our club objective as stated in the By Laws really captures the essence of why we exist: The object of the Club shall be to encourage the sport of yachting, to promote the science of seamanship and navigation, to provide a suitable Clubhouse, Anchorage and Piers for the use of its boating members and to provide facilities for the recreation and social activities of all its members, both boaters and non-boaters. This simple sentence really captures why we exist as a club. From the Fleet Captain perspective, my objective is to ensure our Cruise program is attractive to all members of our club and I will do my best to ensure that it is. I will be the first to say that do not have silver bullet answers in developing a program given our diverse backgrounds. I will say, however, that I will continuously seek inputs and feedback and I will make adjustments along the way as necessary to ensure it is a vibrant, evolving program that is attractive to all members throughout the season. With this in mind, our early 2013 cruise plans are shaping up quite nicely. We will kick off the boating season with the Shakedown Cruise the weekend of April 27th to Havre De Grace with a social gathering at Bruce and Barbi Taylor s beautiful home overlooking the Susquehanna River. The Shakedown Cruise will help work out the winter kinks and help get our boats ready for the following weekend, May 4th, our Opening Day. And 3 weeks later, our first big cruise will be our Memorial Day Cruise, May 25th 27th, which will be a cruise across the Bay up the Sassafras River to one of the Georgetown basin marinas. My hope is that this cruise will get a large number of our Fleet out to enjoy this event. Please mark your calendars and look for more information and RSVP s for the cruising events in the upcoming weeks. FC Bob Gamble 7

9 FROM THE RACE COURSE Its time to beat the February doldrums with a trip to NERYC for our annual Three Sheets to the Wind event. Every year this is a popular club gathering enjoyed by all, and whether you are a sailor, power boater, a boat-free social member or Junior, the camaraderie at this event is unmatched. This year we re all in for a very special treat. One of our members, Eden Shand, who is a native of the warm and festive island of Trinidad, has developed an authentic menu that Chef Brandon will be preparing for us to enjoy a wonderful feast right from the Port of Spain. After dinner, we ll join together to participate in some spirited competition with the Raingutter Regatta. It s a great way to put a lot of hot air to use, and support our Junior Sailing program at NERYC. The proceeds from the race entry fees are one of our major fundraisers for the year. Speaking of Junior Sailing, our 2013 Camp program is now open for registrations on-line at We ve got another terrific, funfilled season planned for our Junior sailors. The sessions fill up fast, so sign-up soon. Also, our 2013 Camp brochure has been printed, and copies are in the foyer. Pick up a few and pass them along to anyone you know who might be interested in attending our fantastic summer program. Its fun, confidence building and boosts the vibrant environment of our club so please help us spread the word about our program. Our 2013 racing schedule for keelboats is about firmed up, the CBYRA Greenbook is going to press, and a customized schedule document is being prepared and will be distributed soon so everyone will be up to date on all the opportunities we have to look forward to for racing in our region during the coming season. So for now, finish up those items on the honey-do list and other wintertime projects, because we ll all be out on the water again before you know it. See you on February 16th 6:00pm for the Three Sheets to the Wind Event! FROM MEMBERSHIP Brrrrrrrrrr! It may be cold outside but it s warm inside! Apparently, the word is out that North East River Yacht Club is the perfect place to come in out of the cold and surround yourself with good friends. This month let s welcome back a former member, Dailey and Jessica Tipton from West Chester, with their children Nate and Leah. Many of you will remember their sailboat Blofish. She s returning in her new form to our marina this spring. We re delighted to have them back with us. We have received three other new members: one full, one winter, and one Junior membership. We are processing their paperwork to make it official. Look out for more details on them in our next Waterline. Kudos to our Membership Committee who are gathering suggestions of nearby Pennsylvania, Delaware and area business locations that are happy to display our color brochures. If you have a suggested spot you pass by on your day to day travels, let us know. We d be glad to provide you with brochures to drop off. If you haven t heard yet we re collecting testimonials for the club website. If you can give us a sentence or two about why NERYC is such a special place, I hope you ll me with it at judy.murray@prufoxroach.com Don t forget to like NERYC on Facebook! Best regards! See you at the club. Judy Murray Membership Chair Mike Wagner Program Chair 9
