In Roman times, March named after the Roman God of War (Mars) was the traditional beginning of war. Like our Roman ancestors, we are preparing for a war except this one is against snow, ice and rising water. Instead of the weapons the Romans used, we are arming ourselves with shovels, high rubber boots and sand. But like war, it will be a mess. There will be rain, rising water and MUD. And of course, the little surprises, those things we have left out or not gotten to in the late fall that are still there, hidden under the beautiful snow banks. We don t need to worry about gardens yet, some of us cannot find our front steps. If we are hoping for a quick melt we would be disregarding the grief that will be served on our low lying members who are praying that the flood plain will remain a plain and not a river. Any harbingers of spring have not appeared as our conditions will not support them. Robins, snow drops, crocuses are something for further down the road like late April or May. The groundhog who predicted an early spring has gone back into his hole to await a later spring and feels no shame after his prediction. After all, we yanked him out from his hole before he was ready. Hope he keeps his head above the water. We are a lucky group because we have Interest groups still thriving on indoor or snowy outdoor activities. We have excellent speakers for our meetings including Kaye Leslie, speaking on Living with Blindness, Steve Dengler who flew around the world in a helicopter, Brock Godfrey speaking on Cyber Fraud and our own Jim Miller talking about his trip on a tramp steamer. You are not going to want to miss any of these. Our Social Committee seems to anticipate our need for indoor fun. On March 28th, we return to That Little Place by the Lights which is a favorite for dinner before attending Mamma Mia at the Algonquin Theatre. I cannot think of a better way to say Goodbye to March. In April we have the popular and free Potluck and Games night. This one is too much fun to miss. Sue Burger, President Interested in what Probus Canada is up to? 2 Huntsville Lakes Probus Club Newsletter Issue: Mar/Apr 2019 Page 2 Our March Guest Speaker Kaye Leslie Kaye has worked in the field of Human Resources for the past 35 years. She has worked in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors and has designed and delivered workshops in Managing Change, E f f e c t i v e C o m m u n i c a t i o n a n d Accommodating Employees In The Workplace across Canada and the United States. Kaye has a zest for learning and believes in continuous learning. She recently completed her Masters degree at York University in Disability Studies. Kaye was born with a condition that resulted in a 98% loss of vision and she has developed a personal and professional interest in disability and human rights. When Kaye is not doing volunteer work, she can be found cross country skiing, swimming and water skiing, sailing and was an avid scuba diver for over 20 years. Kaye found that the best way for her to manage and deal with her disability was through humour. She has been known to participate in stand-up comedy shows at Yuk-Yuks and Second City in Toronto. Kaye also enjoys travel, cooking and entertaining, reading and theater. She also has an interest in writing and she and her brother co-authored a chapter for a text book that has been published and is being used by schools of social work in Canada and the United states. The subject of this chapter was Sensory Loss and Seniors. Kaye acquired her first guide dog named Ultra at 30 years of age and has never looked back. She is now working with her guide dog Storm and retired from Scotiabank a year ago. Kaye and Storm have recently moved from Toronto to Huntsville and are delighted to be closer to family and nature.
3 Huntsville Lakes Probus Club Newsletter Issue: Mar/Apr 2019 Page 3 MEMBERSHIP Our Club s seventh year is off to a great start as evidenced by the popularity of social events and the various special interest groups. Our membership is presently at its limit of 175. We have a Waiting List which at present has twenty-eight names on it. Requests for membership will still be received and names placed on our Waiting List. In the course of the year, it is likely that space for new members will become available due to members changing circumstances such as a move away from the area. When this happens, the next in line on the Waiting list will be contacted. Membership tab at the top of the Home page. For further details, click on the Please remember to wear your name badge at Probus events, especially at the monthly meetings. This makes greeting other members easy.
