Teachers wishing to participate in CAMTA events, such as SAT and the Keel Competition, must pay by the November deadline. From the Vice President I love the start of a new school year. Maybe it s all the school supplies displayed in the stores or the thought of a fresh start that motivates me. This year is no exception. During the summer, I spend a great deal of time thinking about my goals for the approaching musical year. What do I want to accomplish with each student? How can I keep my teaching relevant and interesting? Pondering even further, I ask myself what do CAMTA members need? I came to the conclusion that this year would be a year well spent if we talked shop. Our theme for this year is Let s Talk Shop. We will have very few guest presenters and more round table discussions of relevant topics such as: Group lessons/activities Sightreading methods and strategies Surviving the winter slump Creating a summer income I hope that you ll join me at our monthly meetings for these lively discussions. We learn best by being together and brainstorming. Some of my best teaching tips and strategies have come from my colleagues. CAMTA is a we group. We need each other. We learn best from each other. We challenge each other to be the best teacher we can be. I hope you ll become part of the we this year. I look forward to seeing you on September 9:30 a.m. at Marshall Music for our first meeting. Carol Ivkovich, CAMTA Vice President Jean Hull Teacher Grant Jean Hull was passionate about continuing our education as teachers. If you wish to apply for this grant to attend the MMTA State Conference in Novi, October 7-9, please return your application to Gail Lytle Lira. (See next page for the application.) Gail will also have more copies at the September meeting if you do not get a chance to complete it. 2

4 Other Notes: The SAT Piano Handbook is available online at michiganmusicteachers.org. Please bring a copy of the SAT Handbook Printing Release Form (also on the MMTA website) when attempting to make copies of the handbook at a copy center. A CAMTA Student Opportunities Brochure is now available! This is the perfect handout to give your new piano students, making them aware of all the events CAMTA offers. Please contact Carol Ivkovich at carol_ivkovich@yahoo.com to request brochures. Advanced Registration for the Fall MMTA Conference (October 7-9), is due September 10th. For more information, visit michiganmusicteachers.org. Welcome New CAMTA members! Angela Biedenbender Hyun Cho Ya-Ja Chuang Jeanne D. Fangboner Joseph Henig Megan Higle Linda E. Jones Jeff Kinsey Greater Lansing Music Festival Dear CAMTA Members, I hope everyone had a joyful and relaxing summer! We all wish it could last longer, but as the calendar turns to August, the new school year is gearing up, and most of you are probably busy getting ready for the return of students to your studios. In the newsletter before summer, I mentioned The Greater Lansing Piano Festival will become The Greater Lansing Music Festival, or GLMF. It s official now! The GLMF for 2018 will be on Saturday, November 10 at Faith Lutheran Church in Okemos starting at 10AM. I believe this is the only non- competitive music festival in the area, and now it s open to all instruments. The participants just need to perform one piece. (String, woodwind, and vocal performers would need to perform with piano accompanists unless the composition is specifically composed for solo unaccompanied.) Classical music is preferred but not a must. To encourage all students and their dedicated teachers who participate in this festival, FJH Publishing will send 40 new-release pieces and a discount code for further shopping on their website. Piano Safari will donate free music to participants, and teachers will receive a goody bag of books from FJH. For non-piano students, each will receive a $10 Marshall Music gift card. The registration fee is $20 for each CAMTA member student and $25 for non-camta members. The registration form will be on CAMTA s website, and the deadline is October 27. I hope you ll encourage your students to participate in the new Greater Lansing Music Festival this year! After all, making music is a wonderful thing! If you have any question regarding the GLMF, please contact me or Carol Ivkovich. Matthias Chang, Greater Lansing Music Festival Co-chair President s Greeting Continued from Page 1 Keel Competition, Incentive Awards program, SAT Achievement information, Outreach Recitals How to find your niche Whether you attend the September session or not, be assured that we are interested in connecting with you and answering any questions you may have. Please use the contact information given in this newsletter to follow up with questions to any Board member or committee chair. CAMTA will host the State Conference in October, With the many talents of our 40+ members, we will assist our state organization to enjoy a great experience here in Lansing. Alix Jenkins, CAMTA President 4

5 If you will not be at the September 11th CAMTA Meeting, please fill this survey out and return it to Joan Wierzba by . This survey will also sent in by attachment in a Word Document for ease of Copy and Pasting. Music Outreach Survey 1. Student Recital at Nursing Home: Do we want it annually? or biannually? Suggestions for Nursing Home: Volunteer (refreshments or set-up?) Yes or No 2. "Make Music Day": This is a new event that was introduced. It is an international event to encourage music to be brought out to the public free. Many cities in Europe and across the US have musicians playing in the streets on June 21, which is the day designated. This past June 21, arrangements were made with Reeder Piano, who brought a piano to Lansing Mall. Marshall Music lent a keyboard for us to use at the Meridian Mall. At both locations, students and teachers played from 5:00-7:00pm. Do we want to do this June 21, 2019? Do we have other members interested in participating? 3. "Make Music Day" and playing in the malls may help the malls as well as our name, CAMTA, by being in the public eye. Would members consider a similar winter event in November or January? Would you like to help Verna and I with co-chairing the "Make Music Day" in the Winter or in June? Joan 5

6 CAMTA Meeting Minutes May 8, 2018 Marshall Music The meeting was called to order at 9:50 am by president, Alix Jenkins. New member, Joe Henig, was introduced. The March minutes were approved by the board. President s report: Alix thanked the membership committee for their work over the past year. We had nine new members this year and they contacted each one and made sure they had a yearbook. They also created a new pamphlet to inform people of CAMTA programs. She also thanked all the committee members for their work over the past year. The position of corresponding secretary has been filled by Heather Vedder. She will be in charge of the newsletter. CAMTA will be participating in Make Music Day on June 21. It is sponsored by NAMM and its goal is to have community participation in making music. Two ideas are to have teachers and students perform in a nursing facility and in the lobby of Sparrow Hospital. Members are asked to contribute ideas to Verna and Joan before the next board meeting. Vice-president s report: Not present to give report Treasurer s Report: Not present to give report Joan Wierzba was recognized as Teacher of Year for Unfortunately, she was not able to be at the meeting as she is out of town.
