Our guest speaker was Des Malcolm, Managing Director of the Breathometer Corporation and President of the Rotary Club of Tullamarine. Des was instrumental (excuse the pun) in setting up the Rotary Breathometer program and many clubs have taken advantage of the opportunity afforded by grants from the TAC to purchase and instal the machines in popular local venues. In the pharmacology of alcohol there are many influencing factors in estimating one's breath alcohol content. The emphasis is now on public breath testing, not on counting your drinks or understanding the confusing standard drinks policy. The Victorian State limit is now 0.049g/100ml and the penalties for over-consumption are severe. RoadSafe VIC now embraces the "public breath test" concept to reduce the incidence of drink-driving. Studies conducted by the Monash University Research Centre conclude that there would be a 16% reduction in drink-driving offences should these instruments be made more widely available. Further, they ask: why are hand dryers compulsory in licensed premises and not public breath testers?" As with a standard police breath test, a waiting period of 10 minutes is required for the Breathometer. Mouth alcohol will always indicate a high reading therefore, the correct operating procedure is to wait 10 minutes after the last drink before testing or, at least, rinse your mouth with water to clear the mouth of residual alcohol. The Breathometer is manufactured in accordance with Australian Standards. The company's Quality Assurance Programme encompasses its calibration and servicing routines therefore, at any time, audited records can be provided advising the last period of calibration testifying to the instrument's accuracy. Should the calibration period exceed 30 days, the machine will turn itself off. However, the Breathometer Corporation gives an undertaking that this circumstance will never arise and that their machines will always provide accurate readings when used in accordance with the simple operating instructions. The Breathometers we have purchased combine a Breath Tester and a fixed, illuminated advertising panel. Our ads include a road safety message as well as the Rotary wheel. The ads provide a potential second source of revenue from the instruments. Ray Landgren tested a machine and blew BAC after one glass of red! Veronica O Sullivan said that a standard drink was 100ml and that the glass at Fredricks was double that at two standard drinks. Sixty per cent of money raised is allocated to local road safety initiatives, and we are currently assisting the participation of local high school students in the Fit 2 Drive program. Today Lisa Bagnati from the Moonee Valley City Council (MVCC) gave an overview of this highly beneficial program. Facilitated by Council, the program aims to reduce the number of young people directly involved in road trauma. Students from St. Bernard s College and Mt. Alexander College have been the first to benefit from our support and Community Chair Richard Lawrence, who attended the first session, said the students were very enthusiastic about the program. Last week, Richard also attended an official MVCC meeting at which he presented the BIG Strathmore Community Bank cheque for $3230 to Mayor, Narelle Sharpe. We have also been successful in a second grant application, receiving another $15,000 which will purchase three new machines. Potential venues are now being investigated. 5 Did you know these people contracted polio? F.D. Roosevelt - Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, April 12, 1945) was the 32nd President of the United States. Elected to four terms in office, he served from 1933 to 1945, and is the only U.S. president to have served more than two terms of office. In August 1921 during a family vacation at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Roosevelt contracted an illness, at the time believed to be polio, which resulted in Roosevelt's total and permanent paralysis from the waist down. FDR sought out innumerable cures including electric currents, ultraviolet light, massage and mineral baths - whatever might improve his atrophied legs. He also consulted a number of other physicians and therapists in a vain effort to revitalise his muscles. Kim Beazley - (born 14 December 1948) Australian politician and academic, Kim Beazley was leader of the federal opposition from 1996 to 2001, and from 2005 to He is the only leader in the party's history to return to the position after leaving it. Beazley became a victim of polio at the age of 5 and it caused a royal scare. Kim s mother had shaken the hand of the Queen shortly before Kim was diagnosed with polio. Since polio was known to be contagious some feared that the Queen may have contracted it during that time. John Laws - (born 8 August 1935) a stalwart of Australian talk radio in which he worked longer than any other broadcaster due to his enormous popularity. After 55 years on air Laws retired in 2007 leaving the 2UE building in Sydney with his popular quote 'You be kind to each other'. Laws suffered from polio as a child undergoing treatment in an iron lung. Ian Dury - (May 12, March 27, 2000) Dury was an English songwriter, singer and founder of the band Ian Dury and the Blockheads. He wrote many songs that were banned or refused air time by broadcasters such as BBC. Dury gained popularity as the punk music era commenced. He contracted polio on a trip to a Southend swimming pool which caused partial paralysis of his legs. Alan Alda - Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo (born January 28, 1936) is a five-time Emmy Awardwinning, six-time Golden Globe-winning, Academy Award-nominated American actor. He is perhaps most famous for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in the television series M.A.S.H. Alda contracted polio, aged 7, during an epidemic. His parents administered a painful treatment, developed by Sister Elizabeth Kenny, where hot woollen blankets were applied to the limbs and muscles were stretched by massage. This treatment, though brutal, allowed Alda to recover much movement. Mia Farrow - (born February 9, 1945) is a renowned American actress who has appeared in over 40 films winning several awards in the process. Mia is notable for her consistent humanitarian work and is a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador. She survived polio as a child and subsequently dedicated herself to its eradication. She has helped launch polio immunisation days targeting children around the world under the age of 5 years.

8 Great work for our Club by the East Pantry, Centreway, Keilor East Monica and Michael, owners of the East Pantry at 14 Centreway, Keilor East have a Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. collection box on their counter. They do not take tips but encourage their customers to donate to local charities. Monica says they are happy to support the Rotary Club of Essendon because of the great work the Club does in the community. It has always been their philosophy to encourage staff and customers to be community focused. The Rotary box has been cashed in on two occasions and a total of $210 has been collected.
