3 Why we need Superheroes Granting Magical Wishes for children with Life Threatening Illnesses across Greater Manchester. Every penny raised locally stays locally. Who are we? When You Wish Upon A Star is a small charity whose primary aim is to grant the wishes of children suffering from a life threatening or terminal illness. Each day we receive referrals from Hospitals, Hospices, and families from all over the Country, requesting a Wish for a child in their care. When You Wish Upon A Star comes into their lives at a time when the family of a newly diagnosed child is in deep distress. Our Wish Fairy sprinkles her Magical Fairy Dust and the Magic Begins A Wish is Born! You may ask what is a Wish? A Wish is Precious Time spent with family away from long stays in hospital, and painful treatments. A Wish can be a treasured meeting with a Sporting Hero or a TV Star: A visit to their favourite soap i.e Hollyoaks, Corrie or Emmerdale. A Musical Wish is a visit to The X-Factor Studios and meeting Simon Cowell and the judges or autographs from a favourite boy band A Girly Wish is to be a Model for the day including your own photo shoot in a professional studio and then walk the cat walk. A Once in a Lifetime Wish is Meeting Mickey Mouse, kissing a Dolphin, Having a Special Birthday party in Cinderella s Castle in Disneyland. All of our Wishes are extremely Special and well planned for each child and every wish is Tailor made.

4 Elinor is 13 years old, and was healthy until May Elinor became very ill and had a 10 month stay in hospital. She was then diagnosed with Alper s Disease, a progressive and rare neurodevelopmental mitochondrial disorder. Elinor and her family cannot say thank you enough for the most amazing experience of Elinor s life. The holiday of her dreams was exactly as she Wished it would be. A dream holiday in Florida! Mum Gillian says, Discovery Cove was amazing. Meeting and swimming with Dolphins and Stingrays was a true privilege. Elinor had the most wonderful time of her life. The dolphins we met were Luna and Capricorn and they were truly Magical!. We visited Universal Studios, also The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Words cannot adequately express just how much of a wonderful time Elinor and our family have had as a result of your generosity and thoughtfulness. You gave Elinor her dream and made her Wish come true. Ollie aged 5 was diagnosed with CNL2 Batten Disease. Here are a few words from Lucy, Ollie s Mum. It s hard to believe that its nearly been a year since we were sat in that small white hospital room being told that our little boy will lose his ability to walk, talk, see, and that he would become so ill that he will need to be tube fed. That one day his body will be too weak to do anything. Ollie was sat on his Daddy s knee whilst we were told that Ollie would die. To me that day only feels like yesterday. if I close my eyes I can picture the room, the Doctors, the look of pure horror on the junior doctors face. The tears were running down Mike s cheeks, but then my eyes set on my beautiful little boy sat there without a care in the world smiling at me. How can this world be so cruel? Riley was aged 4 years old when he fell asleep forever. Riley was diagnosed with a malignant Rhabdoid Tumour the size of a grapefruit in his stomach. It attached itself to his spine and heart, and despite an 11 hour operation, many bouts of chemotherapy plus intensive radiotherapy, none of it could save Riley. Mum Angela says, We as a family were helped by this wonderful charity, they arranged a wonderful holiday for us to Disneyland Paris, when we learned that Riley s condition had become terminal and we didn t have much time left to us. Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a child, but I am in no doubt that having this holiday at such a vital point in our lives, enabled us to remember all the lovely happy memories of Riley and his sister Lenina laughing and smiling with Mickey Mouse. The photos and the dvd footage we took helped us with the grieving process, and also gave us hope to keep going through the dark days that lay ahead.

Buys a child an ipad mini providing a lifeline to the outside world whilst in isolation, waiting and hoping for a life-saving transplant. 500 A teenager diagnosed with a devastating illness, can have an exciting Meet & Greet with their lifelong Idol, watch a concert in the best seats, take home a goody bag of celebrity souvenirs and a Selfie with their idol to treasure When a child is diagnosed with a terminal illness, memories become even more precious. A digital camera, a camcorder, a photo printer, and a memory box, will create and keep safe, all those very precious moments Allows a very sick child to fulfil a lifelong ambition to visit Mickey Mouse in Florida, with their family, and experience the magic of swimming with a dolphin.

6 Join our league of Superheroes This is your chance to step up for Cash for Kids, reveal the superhero in you or your company and make a real difference to local children. You can hold a super quiz, a pancake breakfast, or run a superhero dress up day at your school or nursery. Maybe do a superhero challenge and get sponsored by your family and friends. Take a look at our above and beyond fundraising ideas (Page 8). The wackier your idea, the better and no contribution is too small - working together we can make a huge difference. Your activity can take place at any time, but ideally between 11th and 15th May. 9 Above and Beyond Top Five Fundraisers for Schools: 1. Wall Stuck charge a fee for lengths of duct tape that particpants can use to stick a high profile volunteer like the Head teacher of your School to the wall. 2. Decide with Donations Students and teachers vote to decide with donations, the choice with most donations wins the vote. It could be a vote to decide on what task the volunteer will receive, like a pie in the face, bean bath or ice bath, or vote which volunteer has to do the undesirable action. 5. Stop that Sound Play a certain song eg Justin Bieber out through the school in between each lesson, students (or teachers!) have to raise a certain amount to stop the horrific sound. 3. Principal challenge See if your Head teacher or a favourite teacher will agree to do something drastic for example gunge the teacher, if you reach your fundraising goals. 4. World Record Attempt Go for a world record challenge like world s largest game of musical chairs, biggest scavenger hunt or longest football match. The sky is the limit!
