1 COMMUNITY GARDEN AT BELLS BEACH On Saturday 14 th March an afternoon was spent at the recently acquired Lions Community Garden at Indigo Road, Bells Reach, where members of the Lions Club of Caloundra West (with a few others roped in!) dug, pulled, weeded, pruned, planted and mulched the reestablished garden beds. There will be a plan of the beds showing what is growing such as sweet potatoes, strawberries, carrots, onions etc and the Club Face Book site will eventually be showing what is currently available for everybody in Bells Reach, Bellvista and Aura community to reap and enjoy. WRITING YOUR SPEECH FOR CHANGEOVER Writing your speech for Changeover? Dr Gareth Evans provided the following template for writing an end of year speech to the Greatspeech website. 1. Getting Started Begin with a brief recap of the highs and lows of the season, the matches or performances and any notable events that took place. Keep it upbeat especially if things haven t exactly gone according to plan Celebrate your successes however small Don t labour the failures everyone already knows all about them! 2. Review of the Year Several visitors enjoyed the afternoon and grabbed a free sausage provided by the Club at the same time. It was lovely seeing children getting stuck into a bit of digging although most of it was a true hands in soil activity. We hope that seeing some of the produce that had been dug out and some still growing gave them a sense of understanding that veggies are grown in soil and not just in aisle three of a supermarket! If anyone within this community would like to assist us in keeping, what is now a pristine fruit and vegetable garden, or interested in being part of our Club, please contact us through the Lions Club of Caloundra West Face Book site. TIP CORNER As we approach the end of the year, focus on what you have achieved, not what you haven t. Collective wisdom, also called group wisdom and co-intelligence, is shared knowledge arrived at by individuals and groups. Groupthink occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressures lead to a deterioration of mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment. Better an oops than a what if. A review of the year and the people involved makes a good middle section to this kind of speech but it doesn t have to be too comprehensive. Look on it as more of a broad overview than a blow-by-blow account. If you do decide to name people, it s probably best to name everyone; there are few quicker ways to make someone feel undervalued or unappreciated than by missing them out. Be as positive as results allow. This is not the place to have a go at anyone. 3. Looking to Next Year What lessons have been learnt? How should the team/club be going forward? What changes will be made 4. Thank, Inspire and Conclude Make any votes of thanks that you need to, and then aim for an inspirational conclusion that will have everyone enthused for the challenges ahead. End on a high and wish your successor every success. 17

5 LIONS CLUB OF CROWS NEST UPDATE. April has been a busy month and very exciting for the Club. Our community markets at the beginning of the month might have been very quiet stall wise, but our dedicated Lions hopped along to cook some tucker for travellers and holiday passers-by and wish everyone a happy Easter. (some yummy marshmallows and chocolate goodies might have also been shared). With the local show fast approaching the Club has been sponsoring one of the Show Girl entrants, Tayla Ryan. Fundraising activities have been 100 boards, raffles and special essential oils make and take session. LIONS CLUB OF PINE RIVERS The charity of choice for this Lions year is to raise funds for Chaplaincy for two local primary schools, Bray Park Primary School and Undurba State School, Kallangur. Our Treasurer Helen Adams presented a cheque for $2000 last week to Bray Park Headmaster, with President Christine Schofield presenting another cheque for $2000 at the Pancake Breakfast for Undurba School. These funds were raised through the Lions Christmas cake selling. LIONS YOUTH EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION CENTRE She will be presented to the Community, Saturday evening at the annual show ball. Good Luck Tayla. Tayla has also just been inducted as a new member to our Club and will play an active role in the Northern Downs Leo Club not far from taking shape. The Club is also extremely excited with three other new members being inducted into the Club on Thursday evening (19/4). We d like to welcome Fern, Joyce, Tayla and Sebastian (officially a big Lion now) to the Club and welcome to the Lion Family!! Twenty years ago, Lion Clyde Smith House was built and this week the keys were handed over to President Christine Schofield for a self-contained bedroom renovation. This new bedroom has been built into the front patio area of the main building of Clyde House and will now provide extra emergency accommodation for the youth in need who are under Child Protection Orders referred by the Department of Child Safety, Communities and Disability Services. 8 GRANTS AVAILABLE TO CLUBS (in brief) Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) Go to www. Australian Lions Foundation and open Application form and checklist, general grant. Read guidelines and form carefully. Check that your Club has registered as a Member of ALF. Up to $ is available, matched by the Club, for needs and specific items in the community. Study the checklist for eligible and ineligible items. Clubs may apply at any time. A letter is required from the Club to ALF stating the need, and also from the proposed recipient. Obtain written quotes. Details of the Club s bank account are required. Do not spend funds before approval is notified. State the name of the Accountable Officer. Always keep a copy of the application and attachments. If using a pen, please use a black pen (will photocopy) and print legibly. Send completed application to: Peter Boge, Q3 District ALF Chairman, 3 Webster Court, PETRIE Q I shall check the application, and if it is in order, endorse and forward to ALF for consideration. Do not vary the items approved before first obtaining approval from ALF. Queensland Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) Go to and community benefit fund will come up. Click on it and go through the tutorial. Read and listen carefully. Check that your Club has registered with the GCBF as a legal entity. Club will receive a partner number and password to log in. The first time, you will need to provide a copy of your Club s Certificate of Incorporation. You will need to provide a bank verification form stamped by the Club s bank. Up to $ is available for a wide range of needs in the community. Study the checklist for eligible and ineligible items. The tutorial will ask questions about the need, your Club, the area served, and so on. Clubs may apply at any time for the round that is open. Closing dates: 28 February, 31 May, 31 August, 30 November. 24 Approval or otherwise of application is announced before the next round. All grant applications are now submitted on-line, so if necessary, seek help from someone with computer skills. Do not spend funds before approval is notified. State the name of the Accountable Officer. List referees whom the GCBF can contact if necessary. Always keep a copy of the application and attachments. Send completed application to: GCBF at the address they advise you. Do not vary the items approved before first obtaining approval from GCBF. Officers at GCBF are helpful. (E) pboge@bigpond.net.au LIONS MORETON BAY 100 CHARITY BIKE RIDE The annual fundraising event for Lions Youth Emergency Accommodation Centre (LYEAC) will be held on SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2018 with three events being the 163km, the 100km and the 62km around the Moreton Bay region. LYEAC requests the assistance from the local Lions Clubs, Lioness Clubs and the Leo Clubs for their valuable help with the Rest Areas plus marshalling on the Sunday. This is an important safety requirement by the Police and Department of Transport and Main Roads. This year the two beneficiaries are LYEAC and Youth Insearch. 9 GLOBAL LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT. We re in May, and for many us less than two months away from a new role. It may be a Board Position, a Committee Chair, Tail Twister Whatever your role, it is time to start planning and thinking about how you will approach the role, what your deliverables will be, and what your priorities and goals are. The question is how to do this? Attend a Club Officer Forum. (especially if you are a President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Officer, Lioness, Club Service Chair or First Vice President (or other person with responsibility for Leadership), but everyone welcome), This year we will be in Miles (19 May) Toowoomba (20 May), Bellmere (near Caboolture) 26 May and Toowong (27 May) see your Secretary for details. Reflect on people who have done the job before you what did they do, what do you think worked, what would you add, what would you do differently, what do you think would work for you? Richard For Your Global Leadership Team BRIBIE ISLAND LIONS CELEBRATE. Bribie Island Lions celebrated their 47 th Charter birthday on 22 nd March at Blue Pacific Hotel. Bribie was charted on 19 th March 1970 sponsored by Redcliffe Peninsular Lions. Bribie Lions are proud of their achievements in the community over the 47 years and are well accepted and appreciated by the local community. They have met at the same venue for 47 years. A fun day was organised by Glen Hartley and Gordon West by the way of a car rally to test the skills of members in navigating and obeying all the road rules and speed limits A few got confused but no one got lost. The overall winner was Linda West and Peter Kaye and in second position coming in closest to the allocated time was Jo Meredith and Caz Jackson. President Cheryl entered her Hot Rod. A most enjoyable day was had by all followed by a BBQ lunch provided by Chefs Monica and Neville Shaw. 25
