TENERIFFE LIONS AWARENESS DAY. TOOWOOMBA WILSONTON LIONS AWARENESS DAY Lions Awareness Day was held on 3 rd March The Lions Club of Toowoomba Wilsonton made the decision to celebrate this event with a coffee and cake morning in the food court of Grand Central Shopping Centre. Members wore the yellow shirts of the club uniform and had signs advising interested members of the public to seek out knowledge on how to become a Lion. Teneriffe Lions Club - Lions Awareness Day at Powerhouse Markets. We had free Lions helium balloons for the kids, and a free Easter Egg guessing competition. Our group took up four tables within the food court. Members had the opportunity to spend time together without the sizzle of sausages or concerns on the weather. It was a wonderful morning, which was enjoyed by a large number of our members. The interest from the public was brilliant and proved that the community really do appreciate Lions for their work in the community in times of need. 17

IPSWICH HOST REGION FINAL On Saturday, 10 th March 2018, the Lions Club of Ipswich had the privilege of hosting our Region s Final of the Youth of the Year program. The afternoon s Public Speaking session was attended by over forty people with many being representatives from the three Lions clubs Oxley/Sherwood, Forest Lake and Lowood and the Lioness Club of Toogoolawah. It was very pleasing to see school representatives from the four schools attended by the four students as part of the audience. This is proof of the school s assurance that our Lions Youth of the Year program is held in high regard by its staff. Kody Roberts from Lowood State High School and Ariah Edwards from Toogoolawah State High School. The Public Speaking winner was Phoebe McAuliffe who was also the overall winner. The judges found it very difficult to make their final decision as they were very impressed with all four entrants. The four very worthy entrants were Rohan Steger from Forest Lake State High School; Phoebe McAuliffe from St. Aidan s Anglican Girls School; 18

MEET THE LIONS. Lions Clubs in Zone 12 braved the wind and showers to promote Lions awareness during membership month, at Happy Valley Park in Caloundra on Sunday the 11 th of March. The day was organised by Zone Chairman Rob Hobson and despite the weather there were plenty of people enjoying the sea breeze and many families in the park having fun. Dr Joyce Arnold (GMT District Co-ordinator) travelled up from Brisbane to be there, talk to people about Lions and hand out information. A number of people expressed an interest in learning more about Lions and possibly taking the step toward becoming a member. ROMA YOUTH OF THE YEAR. The Roma Youth of the Year (YOTY) event was held on Saturday afternoon, 3 rd March, for the interviews and at our dinner meeting on Tuesday night, 6 th March, for the public speaking part of YOTY. We had two entrants participate. The students were from St John s College. The teacher, Ms Cathy Cooper, was very enthusiastic, being a former entrant in times past, and encouraged the students. Ms Cooper was hoping to get some other students up to speed but time was the killer. Youth of the Year Chair, Lion Paul Hutchinson, said that it was unfortunate that students from Roma State College had been unable to participate this year. Both students, Miss Amelia Gane and Miss Kate Barsby, went very well according to our judging panel. Amelia Gane was the winner of the Public speaking on the night. Our judging panel consisted of David Tulloch, Agribusiness Manager NAB Roma, Stephanie Kay and Helen Macleod. Both girls went onto Chinchilla for the region judging on Saturday 10 th March. A free sausage sizzle was a great hit with all, together with lamingtons and balloons for the children. Being out in the community chatting to people about Lions and of course the weather is a great way to not only bring awareness to people who do not know what Lions do, it is also a great public relations exercise. Judge Helen Macleod, Judge Stephanie Kay, Judge David Tulloch [NAB], Entrants Amelia Gane, and Kate Barsby, President and YOTY Chair Paul Hutchinson. BANNERETTES AVAILABLE Multiple Bannerettes from Q3 District and Conventions, Lioness Clubs, various overseas countries and Districts, District Governors from across Australia 1980 s, 90 s and 2000 s. Interest was sparked by one man who was an Apexian years before and who is now considering becoming a Lion. Above all, it was a great opportunity for the Zone Clubs to be together and enjoy each other s company whilst chatting to the Zone Chairman about their clubs over the BBQ. Diane Hobson These were collected by a Past District Governor who has gone on to Higher Service and are now surplus to the needs of the family. They would like to pass them on to any interested Lions, Lions Clubs and Lioness Clubs. If any Lion or Lions Club wants further information, please contact Lilian O Kamura on

LIONS YOUTH EXCHANGE Dear Members of the Lions Family, On Saturday, 30 June, young people from all parts of the world will be descending upon Australia to be part of this year s mid- year Youth Exchange intake. These young people are aged between 16 and 22 years of age and are hosted by families for 3 weeks before attending one of 4 camps throughout Australia before heading home on Sunday, 29 July. We have young people of various nationalities and with a wide range of interests. We are looking for host families to show them great Australian hospitality. You may be only able to have them in your house as a member of your family for only part of those three weeks and if that is the case, I will find another host family to share the load. Please give this your serious consideration and act quickly to register your interest. The longer it takes to find a host family, the costlier airfares become for our international visitors. Hosting Application Forms are available on the Lions Youth Exchange website or alternatively, contact me and I will send one to you. Please contact me if you have any questions or wish to find out more about hosting. Thanking you in anticipation. Geoff Moor. Youth Exchange Chair, District 201Q LIONS AWARENESS DAY. 25

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT. We have run a few workshops over the past few months, and some of the questions people have asked are worth repeating here. What are the criteria for awarding a Melvyn Jones Fellowship (MJF)? There are no criteria, because it is a Fellowship not an award. It costs US$1000 and may be bought by anyone. In some countries some Clubs require prospective members buy themselves an MJF before they are inducted. However, if your Club would like to give an MJF to a member or member of the public, the criteria are up to you. How do we get a website for our Club? Contact Graham Foote (District Webmaster - lionsd201q3@gmail.com) who can hook you up with Oz Clubhouse a website template for Lions Clubs How do we get a disruptive member to leave? We hope that you can intervene so that the person can become an effective club member. If that doesn t happen, termination is covered in the Club Constitution. If you get to the point where you need to terminate someone, please seek advice from your Zonie or the District Constitution and Bylaws Chairman. You need to ensure that you follow natural justice as well as what is written in the Constitution Is there room for leaders with grey hair? Absolutely room for anyone who is willing to keep up with the times and help our organisation move forward. What is a Club Branch? Clubs may form branches to permit the expansion of Lionism into locations where circumstances do not support the formation of a charter club. They may be special interest Clubs (ethnic group, family, model railway enthusiasts), or it may be an area where the population cannot support a Lions Club ((Club Branches need 5 members, new Clubs need 20 to charter) How do we encourage more/different people to take Board positions? A broad topic, but here are some suggestions - encourage people to take responsibility for projects or parts of projects point out that experience in the workplace translates to Lions encourage Treasurers and Secretaries to have assistants have spots at your meetings to discuss leadership matters and what the roles involve promote District, Multiple District and International learning activities, especially Institutes and the Lions Learning Center - their spelling not mine 26
