THIRTY women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer every hour, one woman every TWO minutes One woman will die of breast cancer every thirteen minutes in the US. About Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure, now the world s largest breast cancer organization and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer with more than $2.2 billion invested to date. Research Dollars at work in Florida Since 1995, Komen has awarded over $10.4 million in research grants in Florida to Florida State University. The six Komen Affiliates in Florida invested nearly $7.9 million in their local communities last year for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, breast health education and outreach. In 2011, Komen awarded $55 million in research grants to 56 institutions in 25 states, the District of Columbia, Australia and Canada, adding to the more than $610 million in breast cancer research it has funded globally over the last three decades. WHO ARE WE? Since 2002, Komen SWFL has funded $5.9 million in local programs and $1.9 million in breast cancer research. In 2013 Komen SWFL granted $678,500 to community based breast health organizations. Komen Southwest Florida services a five county area including; Lee, Collier, Hendry, Glades and Charlotte. Family Health Centers Serving Lee & Charlotte Counties and Western Hendry County Jessie Trice Breast Cancer Prevention Project provides Risk Assessment, Screening and diagnostic services aimed at $ 72,176. early detection of breast cancer in women & men from low-income, African-American and Hispanic communities. Healthcare Network of SWFL Serving Collier County This project breaks down breast cancer barriers by funding breast care education, transportation, screening & $ 66,247. diagnostic procedures for uninsured/underinsured, low-income men & women for whom no other funding is available. Lee Memorial Regional Cancer Center Serving Lee, Glades & Hendry Counties The Komen Breast CARE Program will provide uninsured/underinsured low-income individuals diagnosed with breast $ 112,658. cancer access to staging diagnostics and treatment; genetic screening, psycho-social support, education and navigation. Lymphedema Resources Serving Charlotte, Collier, Hendry, Glades & Lee Counties The grant provides lymphedema therapy and compression garments as well as a six-week survivorship program and a $ 36,836. monthly support group that addresses lymphedema education and awareness. NCH Healthcare System Serving Collier County The breast health program provides all citizens of Collier County breast health education; community resource education $ 59,621. and compassionate support. A breast health nurse navigator ensures continuity of care from diagnosis to survivorship. The grant provides assistance to our most needy uninsured or underinsured patients. Neighborhood Health Clinic Serving Collier County The clinic provides health care for the working, low-income, uninsured adults needing clinical breast examinations, $ 52,770. screening mammograms, diagnostic testing, staging procedures, and follow-up care. Partners for Breast Cancer Care Serving Lee County The focus is to provide services for improved early detection through screenings and diagnostic testing, and provides $ 99,431. case management and education. Senior Friendship Centers Serving Lee County The Centers target men and women between the ages of 50 and 64 providing clinical breast exams, resources, $ 11,468. education, breast health care scheduling, screenings, diagnostic mammograms and follow-up. Virginia B. Andes Volunteer Health Clinic Serving Charlotte County The Breast Health Partnership s activities include mammograms, diagnostics, community outreach, support groups $ 129,310. and actively engages medical-provider partners to realize cost-free surgeries.
