2 About City Year WHAT IS CITY YEAR City Year is an education organization fueled by national service that partners with urban public schools in high-poverty communities to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year AmeriCorps members commit to a year of full-time service in schools, where they tutor students one-on-one, provide support in classrooms and organize school-wide initiatives to improve school culture. Founded in Boston in 1988, City Year works in 28 communities across the United States and has international affiliates in South Africa and the United Kingdom. WHO WE SERVE In high-poverty communities, too many students face obstacles that interfere with their ability to get to school every day, ready and able to learn. These students need extra support to help them overcome challenges they re facing. City Year AmeriCorps members serve where the need is greatest. HOW WE WORK City Year helps bridge the gap between what students need and what schools are designed to deliver. City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time, working side-by-side with teachers, before, during and after school. By serving in elementary, middle and high schools, we stick with students year after year, and become a consistent part of their school experience. Every City Year AmeriCorps member completes at least 1,700 hours of service each year. USE DATA TO PROVIDE TARGETED SUPPORT Research shows that students who are at the highest risk to drop out can be identified as early as sixth grade by three early warning indicators, the ABCs: poor attendance, behavior and course failure in math and English. AmeriCorps members provide individualized support to students who are falling behind, while monitoring the data in real-time so that when one student gets back on-track, we can shift our focus to other students who are struggling. TRAIN & DEPLOY TEAMS OF YOUNG PEOPLE City Year hires and trains diverse teams of young adults to give a year of full-time service in schools, and provides each one more than 300-hours of professional training every year. Each school where we serve has at least one team of 8 12 City Year AmeriCorps members, instantly increasing the ratio of adults to children in the building. That s good for students: they get more individualized attention and support, in and outside of class. It is also good for adults in the building, who have more time to collaborate and focus on the needs of the entire classroom and school. City Year AmeriCorps members offer tutoring, mentoring and engaging activities to improve attendance, behavior and course performance among elementary, middle and high school youth in Orange County Public Schools. We aim to boost academic achievement and student self-confidence, preparing more Orlando children for graduation. Over the past five years, City Year Orlando AmeriCorps members have delivered focused interventions in attendance, behavior, and course performance to more than 3,600 students and of those students, 83% of students who completed City Year Orlando s program maintained or improved in English Language Arts or math.
