Out of a choir of 50, around half knew someone who had either attempted or died by suicide. PAPYRUS were fantastically supportive when we chose them as our charity for A Choir Named Dave's Christmas concert. They were personable, generous and invaluable in the planning and organisation - from posters through to pin-badges and balloons to buckets. The work they do with young people is extraordinary and the communication we received was efficient and the gratitude they expressed was a real pleasure to hear. It was an absolute delight and a pleasure to fundraise for such a stunning and brave charity, who really do save lives. I wouldn't think twice about fundraising for them again. 3 What your fundraising means to PAPYRUS. As a supporter of PAPYRUS, you are part of a community of people with the shared vision that many young suicides are preventable. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people in the UK; 1,659 people under 35 took their own life in But together, there is hope that we can create a society free of the stigma surrounding suicide, with the resources to support young people who may be struggling. HOPELineUK is a confidential support and advice service phone, text or , for young people under the age of 35 who may be having thoughts of suicide, as well as anyone concerned about a young person who may be suicidal. One caller spoke to an advisor and then called back to tell us how much HOPELineUK helped them when they were struggling with life: I remember the first time I rang and wanted to die. I was intent on it. The person working on HOPELineUK was really understanding and helped me stay safe that night. On that call, I was helped to think about coping strategies I could use and what I could do to reach out for more support. I know they re there again if I need them and that s really helpful. We often receive feedback from our callers who tell us that by talking through their feelings and developing a safe plan with the advisor, they are able work through their thoughts of suicide and stay safe. PAPYRUS believes suicide need not be the inevitable outcome of feeling suicidal and that with the right help, support, and advice, together we can save young lives. Your help allows us to keep our services running, offering a lifeline to young people at risk of suicide and creating suicide-safer communities across the UK. With your support we can continue to raise awareness, deliver training, fight stigma and campaign for change. 4 As a national charity, the money you raise has a huge impact on the difference we are able to make, by both ensuring HOPELineUK is there for young people, as well as working towards building suicide -safer communities through our projects with volunteers across the UK. In 2016, PAPYRUS received 66,002 calls, texts and s to HOPELineUK. 80p in every 1 goes directly towards saving young lives through keeping HOPELineUK running, outreach community work and campaigning. 20 can pay for one 20 minute call to help a young person in distress overcome their pain and stay safe. 65 can keep our helpline, text and services running for over one hour. HOPELineUK Advisor 195 can cover the cost of training someone in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST), which is a two day, skills building workshop that prepares caregivers to provide suicide first aid interventions. 500 would enable 30 members of the community to become more suicide aware. 800 would enable 30 members of the community to learn how to identify a person at risk of suicide and understand the reasons why. ASIST Training in Birmingham would help us deliver 5 mental health and suicide awareness sessions to young people would keep our helpline, HOPELineUK, our phone, text and support services, open for vulnerable young people and those around them for an entire week would enable 30 members of the community to be trained in ASIST. 6 Supporting PAPYRUS at your workplace can be a great way to bring the team together, get to know your colleagues better and have a bit of fun too. Lots of companies support their employees with their fundraising ask us about match funding. How about the Great Office Bake Off? Can you convince everyone to give up alcohol for a month? PAPYRUS Coffee Morning? Could PAPYRUS become your company s chosen charity for the year? If holding a separate event isn t for you, how about hosting one of our collection tins for 3, 6 or 12 months? There are countless options for fundraising at a school or college, we ve given you a few ideas below but you are welcome to do something different! Fancy planning a charity Sports Day? Could you run a School Disco and sell tickets? How about a Charity Car Wash? What about a Wear Purple day instead of a non-uniform day? 7 Fundraising can be a fantastic way of getting your friends together, doing something completely different and meeting new people! By fundraising at university, either with friends, or through your Student s Union and RAG, you ll also be raising awareness of services which exist for those who may be struggling to cope with life right now. We are always keen to build up our connections with universities this gives us a real opportunity to raise awareness directly with young people and support those who may be at risk. We endeavor to support our incredible fundraisers as much as possible, so whether you need some advice or want to have a chat about your ideas we are here to help. Raising awareness is also really important can you put us in touch with your welfare officer or list us on your website? Don t forget fundraising also gives you those all important transferable skills that will make you stand out from the crowd after graduation and look great on your CV. 8 Sporting or Outdoor events can be fantastic ways to carry out fundraising! Whether you re a couch potato or a fitness fanatic, there s a challenge for you. Push yourself to see what you can achieve! Things to think about:what is the cost of the event? Are you self-funding it or can you guarantee raising enough to cover both the cost of your challenge and make more on top? Is there anyone else who you could get on board? Fundraising in a team can sometimes give you a greater sense of support and motivation than going it alone. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the #tractorselfie4rob campaign take on a life of its own! From the very first selfie taking place in a small Northamptonshire village to it quickly reaching South Africa, New Zealand, USA and so many other countries, it really does show the power of social media! I hope that my friend is looking down and enjoying the number of selfies that have been taken, particularly those showing off their John Deeres! It is fantastic that such a simple thing can help support such an incredible charity and I hope has helped save lives in the process. Why not push yourself even further and carry out a sponsored overseas challenge? There are many online fundraising sites designed to help you raise money for your chosen charity. Two of the main sites our supporters tend to use are JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving, however you are welcome to use others, such as; MyDonate and Givey. Take photos! - Fundraisers with pictures on their fundraising page raise 14% more per photo and we love to see them! Share your Story. People will give more if they know why you care Set a Target. Pages with a target raise 46% more than pages without! Post updates of your training or planning. - To keep people interested and involved Share your page with your networks. Utilise Twitter, Facebook, Instagram to post about your challenge and we can share it on out platforms too Tell everyone! You can even put a link to your page in your signature.
