1 FEBRUARY, 2018 Ohio Lions E-Newsletter Greetings fellow Lions, CC IPDG Betty Robbins Hoping everyone is healthy and staying warm this snowy, frigid day. Where has the year gone? Can you believe it s almost Convention Season? It s a time to meet up with old friends, time to make new ones, and a time to meet all our Awesome International Director Candidates. Read about them in this newsletter, and then plan on attending our Ohio State Convention in May at the Columbus Marriott Northwest and showing your support for them! Remember our State is hosting the USA/Canada Forum in Columbus this September and we need your assistance throughout the week to make this a huge success. Looking forward to seeing you at your Convention!!! CC Betty

2 FEBRUARY, 2018 RLLI LEVEL PROJECT GROUP The Regional Lions Leadership Institute Level 3 (RLLI3) group of 2016 has chosen a Mobile Eye Screening Unit (MESU) as their legacy project. The group will be purchasing a MESU for the Ohio Lions. After the necessary funds are raised, the group will then turn the MESU over to the Ohio Lions Sight and Hearing (S&H) Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization. The S&H Foundation has joined the RLLI3 group in their excitement of this project! The RLLI3 group feels the MESU will be a great asset for reaching out to large numbers of children to find eye sight impairments. It is important all Ohio Lions work together on a way to reach out to those in need of our assistance, especially children, and the MESU will help us to do just that. The MESU will be equipped and supplied so Lions throughout Ohio can conduct free sight and glaucoma screenings. It will be made available for use at community events, county fairs, health fairs, public and private schools, nursing and assisted living homes and anywhere else people may gather. Other states have had great success with their MESUs. For example, in the years the Massachusetts Lions has had their mobile unit they have been able to reach out to over a half a million people. HOW GREAT IS THAT!! Project Funding Our project has been approved for a $50,000 grant from LCIF. This grant requires that we also raise $50,000. To assist us in raising those funds the RLLI3 group is selling raffle tickets for $20 each with the grand prize being $2,000, 2nd prize is $1,000 and the 3rd prize is $500 with the drawing to be held at the 2018 Ohio Lions State Convention. Our group is asking each Lion and Lions Clubs to step on board and support us in this valuable project. How great it will be to reach out to people throughout the state that we wouldn't otherwise be able to reach?! All donations are tax deductible! Should the group not be able to raise the needed funds for our grant your donation will be transfer to the Sight and Hearing Foundation and used to continue helping us assist those in need of sight and hearing assistance in other ways, so your donation is a win-win all around.

3 FEBRUARY, 2018 Project Mission RLLI3 group mission is to carry out our "WE SERVE" mission by purchasing the MESU so we can provide a new level of service to our communities throughout the State of Ohio! Project Purpose To travel to communities throughout Ohio so Lions can provide free health screenings for vision and glaucoma to people throughout the state. Lions are dedicated to helping citizens preserve their vision. Conducting these health screenings is a grassroots way we can have a direct and positive impact on our citizens, especially the elderly and children. Our MESU could possibly provide over 50,000 screenings a year. HOW AWESOME THAT WOULD BE!! The RLLI3 group from 2016 includes Lions: Joan Bird, Jackie Christensen, Cathy Doyle, Carol Hawker, Linda Metrovich, Cindy Palmentera, Billie Pfeifer, Donna Saylor, Sharon Sweeney, Ollie Paxton-Tipple, and Judy Young. You can buy your tickets from any group member or Zone Chairs throughout the state who will assist you with getting your tickets. Our group members can provide you with more information about the project and answer any question you may have. We ll also get more word out about the project through District Newsletters and other means. We hope you will support the RLLI3 group and the Sight and Hearing Foundation in this project to further our vision as Knights of the Blind and help us continue our pursuit to eradicate preventable blindness! Lions Quest (L.Q.) Everyone knows that Lions are volunteers working toward improving their community, and that quest is an act or instance of seeking, pursuit, searching according to Webster. L.Q. is a prek-12 Life Skills program that works toward bringing parents, schools, and communities into a partnership working toward raising self-reliant children. My desire is to enable Lions to make one additional step toward achieving the mission. A few questions should be answered, namely, who is the intended audience; what is the message; and what do you want the reader to do? WHO: The audience is you, who are reading the e-newsletter. Thank You for your service. THE MESSAGE: To connect your club s actions with LCI s Mission Statement which in part is: volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understand through Lions clubs. What is your club s mission beyond the motto s We Serve and If there s a need, there s a Lion? Lions Clubs do great work, but there is a little room for expansion. Maybe your club members would be interested in expanding work with youth development. L.Q. is owned and operated by LCIF and is dependent on ordinary Lions to share with the teachers and administrators. No single Lion or person has the necessary knowledge or skills to make the entire program work. However, working together we can put the L.Q. materials into the hands of users. WHAT TO DO: Learn more about L.Q. { volunteer to serve on the L.Q. Committee, assist in raising funds, request a club program, or ask for more information from either: PDG Sheryl Schlater PDG Charles Newland 1608 Brook Park Drive, Troy, Ohio Barger Road, Leesburg Ohio (937) (937) E- sas51280@frontier.com E- cnjnewland@yahoo.com

6 Listed below are the candidates for the Ohio Endorsed International Director to be elected on May 19, I have listed them and their information by the District they represent. OH-1 Candidate for OH 13 endorsed International Director PDG MICHEAL T. GIBBS As we move into the second century of Lionism, it is vital that our leaders not only embrace our history but have the vision and knowledge to lead us into this new century. Micheal T. Gibbs is one of these Second Century Lion leaders! Gibbs brings a fresh perspective to every project and opportunity he encounters. Says Gibbs, I applaud the journey MD13 Ohio Lions have taken to get to this point, but like you, know that there is more that needs to be done to meet the needs of a new generation of Lions and leaders. As a Lion, Gibbs has built his leadership skills and network through trainings such as ELLI, ALLI, FDI, Lions University, LCI Learning Center, and LCI Webinars; conventions and Forums. He has used what he s learned to make a positive difference in clubs across Ohio. Gibbs adds, I will leverage my passion, dedication, energy and global network of connections, to work in the best interests of MD13 and the Lions of the world.
