2 Kalamazoo County 4-H News Kalamazoo County Urban 4-H Program Continues To Grow! Kalamazoo County Urban 4-H programming continues growing strong in the urban areas of Kalamazoo with two new partnerships; one with the Kazoo School on Kalamazoo s southwest side, and one with the Northside Association for Community Development (NACD). The Kazoo School is an independent school that has been operating in the city since Much like 4-H, they utilize a unique educational model that values experiential learning and highly engaging programming for their students -- which range from preschool through the 8 th grade. They have recently signed up almost all of their middle school students and many of those who participate in their afterschool programs as 4-H members. Using the Spin club model, as well as traditional 4-H programming, Kalamazoo County 4-H is providing after school programming and in-school enrichment to many of these new members. An in-school photography program is already underway in their middle school classrooms, and an afterschool gardening club begins October 29 th. It is our hope that this partnership soon evolves into its own community club for all 4-H members residing in the Southwest side of Kalamazoo; but until then, pre-existing clubs can expect to see a few new faces at their next meeting. Let s give these new families a big welcome into the world of 4-H! The second partnership is with the Northside Association for Community Development, where 4-Hers are restoring an urban garden and greenhouse. This site will be used to grow greens throughout the winter. They will then be opening up a store, located at 612 N. Park Street, offering organic, healthy products of their 4-H club to urbanites who want to eat right and support local business. This combination of entrepreneurial programming with agricultural education is one area in which 4-H excels so the next time you re on the Northside of Kalamazoo, stop by the Northside 4-H produce stand and help support the cause! Other partnerships and opportunities continue to present themselves every day, so keep checking in with the Kalamazoo County 4-H Twitter at and Blogspot at for more updates. 5 Kalamazoo Club 4-H News Cooper Shooters 4-H Club Rifle Target Shooting Our goal is to introduce school age (9-19 year old) youth to the shooting sports. We also want to encourage their continued involvement by providing, promoting, and perpetuating opportunities to safely and enjoyably participate in a high-quality, team-based sport. Led by trained adult coaches focused on enhancing the personal growth and development of their athletes. We meet at the Kalamazoo Rod & Gun Club. The next four meetings are on November 4th and 18th and December 2nd and 16th. 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month 6:45 to 8:30 pm Rus Hollister POULTRY PROJECT The Poultry Project has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 19th at 7 pm in Room B at the fairgrounds. We will be having a fun Poultry CSI session that we learned at the MSU Poultry Workshop in September. Also, if you are considering ordering some breed/show chicks to bring to fair next year, take a look at the McMurray Hatchery website and come to the meeting with your order or take a look at the catalogue at the meeting. We need to put in the order in early December so that we will get the breeds that we want. We have a connection to a local poultry leader that has some adult Jersey Buff heritage turkeys that she would like to relocate. She wants them to go to a family that would be interested in breeding them as they are very rare and a good market heritage breed. If interested or just want more info about this breed, call Jackie Stasevich at In addition, here is the 2014 Poultry Project list of ordering and pickup dates for 2014 for the Market Project. As far as we know the pickup place will still be at the Feed Bag in Richland. Poultry members can sign up for chicks starting at the January meeting or by calling Ann Hollister at ORDER DATE PICKUP DATE Turkey Feb 21 March 25 Market Geese March 28 May 6 Heavy Duck April 11 May 20 Roaster May 2 May 28 Market Ducks May 9 June 10 Broiler May 30 June 24 Cornish June 6 July 1 Ann Hollister - Poultry Co-Superintendent Jackie Stasevich - Poultry Co-Superintendent November - December H Family Newsletter Page 5

Any questions call Mike or Dave Juday at or Dave Dyer at Dairy The Dairy Club had a great time at the World Dairy Expo that was held in October in Madison, Wisconsin. We spent time at the National Dairy Shrine learning about the history of the dairy industry and visited the Nasco Catalog Store. The World Dairy Expo was an amazing experience! The club members saw vendors from all aspects of the dairy industry - from taking care of calves and cows, to taste testing fabulous Gouda cheese. Fun fact -there were visitors from over 92 different countries that either attended or exhibited at the show! We finished up the trip with a trip to the Jelly Belly Factory and learned about the history of the jelly bean - if you see any of the kids that went, ask then about the gross jelly beans they tried!
