What a year it has been! As always we have packed in a lot of activities and achievements ranging from UKSA, Walk the Wight, Global Rock and an amazing art exhibition, to gaining the Silver Artsmark Award to name but a few. As you are all aware, in the middle of a very busy summer term, we had an Ofsted inspection. I am now delighted to be able to tell you that we are officially still a good school. Please find attached a copy of the final report which as we had a short inspection is in the form of a letter. I hope that you will all agree it captures the essence of Medina House School. It is also available on our website and in September will be on the Ofsted website too. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who completed the Ofsted questionnaire or spoke to the Ofsted inspectors, which helped to give them your perspective of the school, and all the staff and governors for their unfailing hard work which has now rightly been officially recognised. On Saturday we had our leavers prom it was a privilege to share such a special celebration with our 14 leavers, their families, class teams and governors. I know you will join me in wishing them all the best as they move on to the next stage of their education at St Georges. I would also like to thank Aaron (Jellyfish) and Louise (Stingray) for all that they have done at Medina House and wish them good fortune for their new adventures. In addition, I know you will join me in thanking and wishing good luck to Alex as he leaves to take up his Headship at St Francis School in Ventnor. Last but not least, good luck to Donna who is leaving to go on maternity leave and congratulations to Sam McLuckie (Seahorse) and Mia Brett (Starfish) who are both getting married over the summer holidays. Finally and most importantly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your families for your unfailing support of the school this year and to thank an amazing staff team for all their hard work. Together, we have once again enabled our incredible children to be the best they can be. I wish you all a very happy summer let s hope the sun continues to shine! I am already looking forward to seeing all the children again on the 5 th September and to hearing all their holiday news! Best wishes From a very proud head teacher!

We would also like to say goodbye and good luck to Asa, who leaves us from Starfish Class today. And last, but not least it s farewell to a few members of staff. Alex, Aaron and Louise are off to pastures new and Donna is having a baby. We wish them all the very best.

4 School News Sibling Day 2018 On Thursday 12th July, 27 children came to MHS from a variety of mainstream schools to spend the day with their siblings and what a busy and positive day it was! Loved it that I have learned Makaton when acting to the Trolls song. Their behaviour was amazing and the bond between the brothers and sisters was a delight to witness. Many thanks to Shannon who took a Makaton signing slot, which was enjoyed by many. Also, thanks to all the other staff members, who coped admirably with very full classes. My sister uses a straw really well. The visiting children completed evaluation forms before they left and here are some of their wonderful comments :- He can sing! It s positively positive! She can tell people what she wants. He tries different foods he has never had! Medina House is great. And a bit surprising! Why do children behave better at Medina House? My brother is really, really quiet and clever at school! Can I work here when I m older? They do Maths and English. It s AMAZING! I didn t know my brother could speak so much more. Wow! My sister really loves music.

5 Here come the Hover Inspectors! On Tuesday 17th, 10 pupils from MHS were invited along to Hover Travel as hover inspectors. This was part of Hover Travel s Hover Care Programme to help them make their service more user friendly for children, young people and adults with SEND. They were all given VIP treatment and taken out on their own private hovercraft for a flight on the Solent. This included the pilot showing off by doing doughnut pirouettes in the middle of the sea, going sideways and backwards and floating. Each pupil had the opportunity to ask the pilot and Hover Travel staff a variety of questions and make suggestions for improvements. We are very proud that the hover inspectors have helped to enhance the future travel experience of SEND children and adults. Everyone had a great time, and all the children left with a fabulous goody bag.
