It was lovely to meet some of our families at this event. Year 12 Graduation We farewelled our Year 12 graduates and families last week in style with a themed dinner, Hollywood held in FJ Rose hall. Staff and students planned, prepared and served the graduation dinner - a credit to all involved. On behalf of the College community we wish Jesiah, Audrey, Jamie, Peter and Clarissa every success and thank their families for the love and support they have given their children throughout the primary and secondary years. Deaf Expo Marg Tope Acting Principal Thank you to staff who volunteered their time last Saturday to ensure VCD was well represented at this years Deaf Expo. Staff reported the VCD calico bags and other material were a big hit with people who visited the booth to learn about programs we off at this proud College. Our hospitality programs, Hands On Learning programs and ASDAN pathways were of particular interest to families.

2 Primary News Primary Deaf Sports The Primary Area attended the annual Primary Deaf Sports and participated in a range of sports including, running. shot put, vortex, long jump and high jump, as well as a Tri-Skills Program for the younger students. Congratulations to Precious, Alec, Issa and Dilpreet who volunteered for the day from the Secondary Area. Under some very difficult conditions, they helped make the day a fabulous day. Congratulations to Meyra and Ezrah who were awarded the trophy and medal for sportsmanship. All students were amazing!!! Well done 2

3 Senior News HEAD START WEEK What a great week we ve had with next year s Senior students. Future Year 11 s and 12 s have participated in a week of workshops, discussions, guest speakers and activities to help them prepare for 2019 and beyond. 3 A highlight has included Pathway Panel presentations by ex-vcd students Nyanakuek, Janette and Reece. Through these chats our students have gained some fantastic perspectives on the experience of different school leavers including further study options, challenges, career changes and the range of support services they used to get to where they wanted to be. Everyone was really engaged and asked excellent questions of all the presenters. Throughout the week students have been able to get to know their new classmates, develop expectations for their learning program and begin planning projects for next year. The senior team have been very impressed with the group and are looking forward to working with the new Senior cohort in 2019!

4 Year 12 Graduation Senior News 4 Last week we said goodbye to our 5 graduates, Peter, Jesiah, Audrey, Clarissa and Jamie. We wish them all well as they spread their wings and take on the new and exciting challenges of life after school. Peter is seeking a hospitality traineeship with support from Sign For Work. Audrey will be perusing Hospitality studies in Commercial cookery and Patisserie. Clarissa is exploring her passion for writing. Jesiah is exploring some employment options and Jamie is moving to rural Victoria to be near his family, he is seeking supported employment. We congratulate the senior team and the Tradeblock crew who under the guidance of Audrey orchestrated the Hollywood themed event. This work formed part of Audrey s Senior VCAL assessment. Congratulations Audrey, it was a hit!!

5 All School News Let the Day begin Punt V High What a fabulous day had by everyone involved!! A big thank you to all the staff for their team spirit and hard work. Without you these types of events would not be possible. Well done all athletes for your good sportsmanship and enthusiasm!! 5

6 Tradeblock Ten years ago, Newsboys Foundation funded the establishment of Tradeblock café. The story below was run in their 125 year anniversary book that was recently published. 6

9 VCD Programmes and Events FJ Rose Oration 9 For the annual FJ Rose Oration, held on Tuesday 13 November, the students were treated to a visit by the voluntary organisation Hear No Evil. This group focuses on the rescuing and adoption of dogs that are deaf and deaf blind and with Canine Compulsive Disorder. Joanne Heyman and Tracey Seychelle brought their dogs, Willow and Ivy. We learnt many deaf dogs are euthanised, because of a common and incorrect belief that deaf dogs are hard or impossible to train. As Joanne said, they were considered hard work, not suitable for adoption, had no quality of life and could not be used to make money. Since the inception of the organisation, over 150 deaf dogs have been rescued. The dogs are trained using one hand signs and we saw some special tricks from both dogs. Willow understands and obeys 12 signs. Hear No Evil are always on the lookout for financial support and rely heavily on fundraising and donations to continue their work with deaf dogs. It was a fantastic opportunity to see how our Deaf community can also include animals. Thank you to Joanne, Tracey, Willow and Ivy for joining us for the FJ Rose Oration.

10 VCD Programmes and Events VCD had a stall at the Deaf Expo held at the Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday, 10th November, Everyone had a wonderful time manning the stall and telling people about our magnificent school. 10
