Dallas Metropolitan Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women s Clubs, Inc. website: dallasmetroclub@gmail.com Our History During the decade of the 60 s, about the latter part of 1963, the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women s Clubs, Inc. began an expansion program. Under the leadership of the National President, Mrs. Florence Allen Holmes, contact was made in Dallas, Texas and a group of women in related work fields were called together by Mrs. Dickie Foster. Information concerning this organization was shared with these women and the decision was made to contact others for an official meeting to be held in the home of Mrs. Jewel Y. Lott, who was a member of the South Central Business and Professional Women s Clubs. This meeting ended with a decision to organize a group. Mrs. Holmes was notified of the decision. She came to Dallas and met with the larger group of ladies, and they were given an application for charter. The group decided to name the club the Florence Allen Holmes Business and Professional Women s Club. The Officers elected to serve were: Mrs. Nina Carter, President; Mrs. Birdie Johnson, Secretary, Mrs. Grace McMillian, Treasurer. Over sixty women were members at the time of the charter. As National Officers changed, ideas changed and a decision was made at the National level not to have clubs named after a living person. On May 1, 1968 a revised charter was issued renaming the organization Dallas Metropolitan Business and Professional Women s Club. The Dallas Metropolitan Club has served the community under the leadership of sixteen presidents. They are: Nina Carter, Jessie Campbell, Mattie Mills, Billie Baccus, Ruby Carroll, Doris B. Williams, Esther Evans, Dr. Versia L. Lacy, Doretha Hornbuckle, Edna L. Allen, Portia Greet, Lillian Brown, Frankie Roland, Lessie Terry, Evelyn Foreman and Gail Thames.
The current officers are: Gail Thames, President; Patricia Hall, First Vice President; Verna Wilson, Membership Director; Vicki Brown, Youth Leader; Nena Bradford-Hayden, Recording Secretary; Frances Jones, Financial Secretary; Lessie Terry, Treasurer; Joyce Billings, Chaplain; Vernell Stribling, Corresponding Secretary and Dr. Ethel Scruggs, Parliamentarian. The Dallas Metropolitan Club members are committed to the organization and support the mission of the association by being a 100% Life Membership Club. We were recognized and awarded at the 81 st National Convention as the only club in the Association with all Life Members. The Doris Butler-Williams annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon is our major fundraiser where we honor members of the community and highlight our scholarship recipients. This year s event is scheduled for November 4, 2017 beginning at 11:30am at Courtyard Marriott-Dallas Medical/Market Center, 2150 Market Center Blvd., Dallas, Texas. You are cordially invited to attend. Donation is $60.00 and it will help to sponsor scholarships to deserving Youth. We also host a Madd Hatters Tea and Lady of Elegance Pageant the first Saturday in May to raise funds. Some of the many community service activities performed by Dallas Metropolitan Club are Leadership training, Entrepreneur workshops and Technology workshops. Other services we have provided to the community includes clothing and lunches for women shelters, panties to Parkland Hospital for rape victims, dress for success, can goods for various food pantries to name a few. We recently adopted T.L Marsalis Elementary School in Oak Cliff. Last year we donated hundreds of books and pencils, offered tutoring and honored the teachers during National Teacher s Appreciation Week. The Dallas Metropolitan Club has been in the Bertha Perry Rhodes Hall of Fame for many years and continues to offer quality programs in the community. Our programs were recognized by National through first place awards in Banner Parade for two consecutive years. Banners are used to display programs implemented during the club year. The club keeps its commitment of being a service organization by supporting community efforts. Expansion and National Projects continue to be supported by the Dallas Metropolitan Club.
The Garland Club of NANBPWC, Inc. The Garland Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women s Clubs, Inc., established in 1980, is a dynamic group of ladies. We pride ourselves on our dedication to the community and our support of the Club s phenomenal youth component. The current elected Executive Board members are Wathenia (Tina) Clark President, Hedy Watkins 1 st Vice President, Carol Blakes 2 nd Vice President, Gilda Smith Reporting Secretary, Jacquelyn Jackson Financial Secretary, and Ruby Armstrong Treasurer and a Club Founder. One of the Garland Club s programs supporting the community this year was the Think Heart, Think Health Luncheon held on February 4, 2017, at the Sims Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Garland. The purpose of the event was to observe the American Heart Association s (AHA) Go Red for Heart annual emphasis, to promote the NANBPWC National Program, and to garner community support for AHA s Empowered to Serve movement. The Club partnered with the Garland Area Model Mission and Sims Chapel Missionary Baptist Church to provide both an entertaining and educational afternoon for over 80 women attending the luncheon.
As Mistress of Ceremony, Garland Club Sister Bennye Thomas kicked off the Luncheon with an inviting call-out to everyone. The then Garland Club President, Bobbie Castille, followed with a warm welcome. Each attendee received an AHA bag filled with items including a cookbook and heart and stroke information. Educational handouts were available as additional information.
A pen and an Empowered to Serve brochure lay with each table setting. Luncheon speaker, Dr. Jasmine Ward of AHA, Dallas Division, appealed to the attendees to signup to get the word out about living heart-healthy lives. Twenty-six participants volunteered. Entertainment opened with an inspiring repertoire of song from Shawn Belton-Miller.
One of the highlights of the Luncheon was a Fashion Show of Hats.
However, the ultimate highlight of the Luncheon was the fantastic contribution presented by primary luncheon host and Garland Club Sister Carol Montgomery to Dr. Jasmine Ward of AHA. NANBPWC Garland Club ($800) and Garland Area Model Mission ($200) donated a total of $1, to AHA to assist in its effort to educate Dallas area communities.
The Sisters of the Garland Club of NANBPWC, partnering with the Garland Area Model Mission, are proud of hosting a successful Think Heart, Think Health Luncheon which both educated and entertained those who attended.
