We are in the business of Youth Development for youth ages 9-18, with limited programming for younger audiences, and offer programs and clubs that give youth a chance for hands on learning! We are excited to get our 4-H year started and hope to see you at some of our clubs, activities and programs this year! Cathy Weaver Jessamine County Agent for 4-H and Youth Development Abby Sorrell Abby Sorrell Jessamine County 4-H Assistant 4-H Enrollment "To M ake the Best Better' 9 years old through 18 years old (by January 1st of current year) All 4-H members must re-enroll each year for the 4-H program. The enrollment process includes filling out the Jessamine County 4-H Enrollment Packet in FULL. If you are a 4 th or 5 th grade student in Jessamine County you will enroll in your classroom. If you are associated with a particular 4-H club you will fill out your enrollment packet upon the startup of that particular club or group. In order to travel with 4-H, and to be considered a member/4-h family in good standing you must have an enrollment packet on file, fully complete.

2 Achievement Program 4-Hers who were involved with 4-H over the previous program year (September 1, August 31, 2018 are encouraged to apply for the 4-H Achievement Awards! This program gives youth the opportunity to obtain scholarships for college and for 4-H events based on 4-H involvement! Interested individuals please plan to attend the 4-H Achievement Award Workshop on October 18 at 6:00pm at the Jessamine County Extension Office. This workshop will explain the program and give detailed instructions on how to be successful when applying. Youth and parents are welcome to attend. We will actually be starting our applications this night so if you want to bring a lap top feel free!! Please call the office to sign up to attend the workshop. Draft applications due November 9th FINAL APPLICATIONS ARE DUE November 30, no late applications will be accepted. Jessamine County 4-H Teen Council is open to anyone who is 9th grade and above and interested in working to develop leadership skills, and work to better both 4-H and our community! We meet once a month, we complete civic engagement projects to help Jessamine County in various ways, and plan fun activities for the council to participate in. Members of the teen council have a chance to travel to district and state wide retreats and leadership conferences! Anyone who is interested in becoming a Junior Counselor at 4-H camp should look into joining! We count your 4-H involvement in scoring to select Junior Counselors! Kick off Meeting: Monday September 24, 2018 Time: 7pm-8:30pm Where: The Extension Office Meeting Room We will be working on some exciting things for our upcoming year as well as reconnecting after the summer off! Food will be served!! 4-H Council Invitation and Leaders Meeting/Orientation The Jessamine County 4-H Council serves as the advisory board for our 4-H program. This council helps shape the 4-H program in our county; they make decisions on programming to offer, and help fundraise to support scholarships and other needs for 4-H members. If you are interested in joining this advisory council please Cathy at cathy.weaver@uky.edu. We meet once a month, on the 3 rd Tuesday except in December. The September Kick Off meeting will be Tuesday September 18, 2018 beginning at 6:00 pm. It is pot luck! Meat and drinks are provided. We would love to have you join! Each year we do a leaders meeting and yearly orientation along with our September 4-H Council meeting. We ask that all club leaders attend this event! We will be sending information to each leader about this meeting! Be on the lookout!

3 Middle School 4-H Please see the flyer on the back for fun district wide middle school opportunities. You do not have to commit to attending all the events! Call the office at or to add your name to our middle school information list! We will provide a letter with the KRS statute that counts you present on school days for 4-H events SAVE THE DATE! Middle School Retreat will Be October 25-26, 2018 at Feltner 4-H Camp! We will send more information to our 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th graders interested! 4-H School Clubs are up and running! All 4th and 5th graders receive a 4-H lesson in their classroom during their 4-H club meeting each month. Lessons support the KY Education Standards and are presented by the 4-H Staff. If you have a 4 th or 5 th grader in Jessamine County Schools be sure to ask them about Mrs. Abby or Ms. Cathy coming to see them this month! We are always looking for leaders for our various clubs and projects! If you believe you have a skill or knowledge in a particular area, contact the 4-H office and we will work with you to find the spot just right for you! Our volunteers are the backbone of the 4-H program and allow us to expand what we can offer the young people of Jessamine County. 4 4-H Project explanation 4-H Projects are available to fit the interests of all youth. Choose your projects based on your interests and your ability to follow through with that project. Some projects require special tools such as a camera for photography and tools for woodworking. Sometimes projects require some outside help. 4-H Projects can be completed either at one of our 4 -H project nights, or on an individual basis! These 4-H Projects can be turned in at the County Fair in July 2018 to compete for PRIZE MONEY and a chance to go on to represent Jessamine County 4-H at the Kentucky State Fair. Every entry at the county fair receives prize money! Each month in our newsletter we will highlight a 4-H project that can be completed individually. We will also advertise our 4-H project nights as they happen! Below is a list of some of the project areas offered! Be on the lookout in our monthly newsletters for more information about these categories and what you can be working on to complete these projects! -Home Environment- making things for your home such as a bulletin board or refinishing a piece of furniture -Natural Resources -Crafts including decoupage, paper crafts, painting and drawing -Gardening -Citizenship -Babysitting -Photography -Cooking -Electricity -Forestry including leaf collections -Wood Working -Sewing -Insects -Crochet -Quilting -Knitting -Ceramics -Cake Decorating This month s highlighted project is the 4-H insect project! See the flyer in this mailing about the project. We have project books available that can help you complete this project. Time to start collecting insects Source: Blake Newton, extension specialist for entomology It s never too early to start collecting for Collecting insects throughout the year gives young people the opportunity to gather a larger variety and can lessen their stress as county contests approach. This is especially true for first year collectors who are just learning the process. Insects tend to be more common during certain seasons. Here are some insects that are in abundance now or will be soon. Large insects including milkweed longhorn beetles, milkweed bugs and butterflies are on milkweed plants. Orange soldier beetles, locust borer beetles and ambush bugs are common on goldenrod. A variety of large beetles and moths are found around porch lights at night, especially on really warm evenings. Praying mantises are peaking in size now and are found in sunny weedy spots near roads, fences and ponds. Green stink bugs, squash bugs and ladybugs are in the garden now. First time participants should know that insect collections must have at least 25 insects and no more than 50, with at least four orders represented. Larger and more diverse insect collections are required as 4-H ers age through the program. Additional information about supplies and collecting insects is available online at or by contacting the Jessamine County office of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. 5 Jessamine County 4-H Specialty Clubs Enrollment Meeting Information Jessamine-County-4-H 4-H A-TEAM DOG CLUB Information: The A-Team 4-H Dog Club is for youth who want to have fun learning about dogs and how to train them, competing in 4-H events and making friends with other dog lovers. They meet at 6:30 pm on the second Monday of the month (excluding holidays) at the Jessamine County Fairgrounds. First Meeting: Monday September 10, 4-H BLUE RIBBON DOG CLUB Location: Kandoo Canines, 4976 Old Versailles Rd, Lexington, KY Information: The Blue Ribbon 4-H Dog Club of Jessamine County, Kentucky. Members are active in the dog community locally, statewide, and nationally. Members participate in showmanship, obedience, and agility. The goal of this club is to help member achieve there personal goals. First Meeting: Tuesday September 11, COLONELS 4-H HORSE CLUB Information: The Colonel s 4-H Horse Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Ag Learning Center at City/County Park. Come to the meeting and bring a friend!! Interested youth do not have to own a horse to be in the club; however, in order to participate in any of the riding activities you must own a horse. We have fun exploring 4-H. First Meeting: TBA Space is limited Please Call to reserve your spot. Cost: $30.00 for the year, covers a t-shirt and crafts

6 4-H RABBIT CLUB INFORMATION: Rabbits are the perfect animal for 4-H members who do not have enough land for larger livestock. Our club will teach members all about rabbits, their habits, needs proper care and management, as well as aspects of breeding, pedigrees and showing. Will meet 1st Monday of the month. No Rabbits at 1st meeting. But a parent must attend. For 6-18 yr olds. 6-8 yr olds a parent must come with them. FIRST MEETING; Monday, Oct. 1, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. 4-H ART CLUB 4-H KITCHEN STARS COOKING CLUB BEGINNER (ADVANCED WILL BE OFFERED IN SPRING) HOOF PRINTS 4-H LIVESTOCK CLUB INFORMATION: This is a NEW art club for ages Students will explore several areas of creative expressions including but not limited to acrylic painting, clay, pastels, watercolor, print making, leather works and more! Most of the items completed will be eligible to be entered into the Jessamine County Fair during July! Cost for this year's club and meeting schedule will be set at the first meeting. Club will meet once per month from October through May. FIRST MEETING: Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 6:30 pm- call to register (20 limit) Nicholasville, INFORMATION: This beginner cooking club will learn basic food preparation and nutrition skills! We will prepare a recipe from start to finish at each meeting. If you love to cook, or want to learn to cook this is the place for you! We will learn to prepare a variety of dishes, and the skills needed to complete those dishes! We will meet the 4th Tuesday of the month. FIRST MEETING: Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018 at 6:00-7:30 p.m. TO SIGN UP: Call or cathy.weaver@uky.edu to register. Space is limited to the first 16!!! Cost: $15.00 to be paid at the first meeting. INFORMATION: Are you interested in Sheep, Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Goats or Swine? Join the 4-H Hoofprints Livestock Club and learn more about all these animals, including showing and judging them. ALL youth who wish to show livestock MUST obtain 6 hours of education from a certified livestock leader in the county. Meetings count for hours. FIRST MEETING: Will be in December. More information will be available then. 4-H MARKSMEN CLUB INFORMATION: The Jessamine County 4-H Marksman's Club teaches youth both safety and marksmanship. Club members will practice regularly with trained coaches. 4-H offers competition opportunities to those who are interested! We have some equipment available for those interested in participating, but do not have their own. The season runs from April until September. The introductory and safety meeting will be held in March of More information will be available at that time. 7 Jessamine County 4-H is looking for leaders, coaches and volunteers for this year! Discover new friends and experiences while making a difference We are hoping to expand our 4 -H program by adding volunteers and coaches for new and existing programs! 8 Jessamine County 4-H Volunteer/Coach/Leader wish list! As a volunteer for 4-H you can chose the format you wish to offer a program in! We are looking for club leaders, project workshop leaders, judges, and coaches! You can chose to hold monthly or regular meetings during the school year, you can offer a short term program, 4 6 weeks meeting weekly, or a one day workshop! We also have speech and demonstration judge slots we are always looking to fill, which is a very short term commitment!
