1 EKU Student Wellness Resource Center Presents: Student Wellness Program Spring 2011 Building a foundation for lifelong personal health and wellness Good luck on your EKU wellness journey! 1

2 What is Wellness? Wellness is your life at a balanced optimum. Wellness is health in the deepest and broadest sense of the word. Wellness is a process rather than a goal. It is a journey over a lifetime. Small changes in behavior allow for huge changes in quality of life! Wellness is that special blend, that unique formula, that secret recipe. The ingredients are your own, and only you can create it however, you are not alone. The EKU Student Wellness Resource Center is dedicated to sharing the journey, connecting you to resources and programs and each other, putting Wellness at your fingertips. Wellness is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. World Health Organization "Health promotion is the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health. Optimal health is defined as a balance of physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual health. Lifestyle change can be facilitated through a combination of efforts to enhance awareness, change behavior and create environments that support good health practices. Of the three, supportive environments will probably have the greatest impact in producing lasting change" American Journal of Health Promotion 2

3 8 Dimensions of Wellness Emotional Wellness Having high self-esteem, confidence, satisfying relationships, a support network, and staying optimistic. The ability to control stress and appropriately and comfortably express emotions Environmental Wellness Learning and contributing to the health of the planet and a sustainable lifestyle. The ability to recognize our responsibility for the quality of the air, the water and the land. The ability to make a positive impact on our environment, be it our homes, our communities or our planet. Helping to eliminate or reduce or protect one s self from exposure to toxic chemicals. Financial Wellness Knowledge of resources that will help fund education and living expenses. The ability to maintain a balanced budget. Preparedness for all expenses, including short-term, long-term, and emergencies. Occupational Wellness The ability to get personal fulfillment from our jobs or our chosen career fields while still maintaining balance in our lives. Intellectual Wellness The ability to effectively learn and use information for personal, family and career development. Getting the most out of classes and education by asking questions, being open to new ideas, learning new skills, and studying effectively. Physical Wellness Optimal physical wellness requires eating well, exercising, avoiding harmful habits (such as smoking), getting enough sleep, recognizing the signs of disease, getting regular physical exams, and taking steps to prevent injury. Social Wellness Having a supportive social network, contributing to society, and valuing cultural diversity. Spiritual Wellness Possessing a set of guiding beliefs, principles, or values that give meaning and purpose to life. Spiritual wellness is also the capacity to love, have compassion for others, forgiveness, joy, and fulfillment. 3
