Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will find a group of shagging souls that ventured to Wrightsville Beach to party in the dead of winter. Word has it that it was a great adventure and may possibly be repeated next year. As this newsletter goes to press, we are bidding Mr. Kelly farewell and off to our new home Duck Woods Country Club. While we are excited about the move, we leave Kelly s with many fond memories and for some of us, a bit of sadness. We called Kelly s home for over five years and during that time, Mike and his team were model hosts, made us feel welcome and became good friends. We wish Mike best wishes as he continues his journey to a successful conclusion for his business and wherever his desires take him. Speaking of the Country Club, I met with both the General Manager and Food & Beverage Manager recently to talk about our arrival on the 6 th of February. They are excited about our coming and promise to make our Monday nights very enjoyable. Both organizations need time to get to know each other so over the course of the next few weeks, if you have a suggestion, please reach out to me. We have closed out the two surveys currently requested feedback from the NYE Gala and Membership feedback Events. On the topic of Events, we had 75 responses from the membership giving the Board much data to discuss and determine the best events to hold in Stay tuned for the results. As communicated in our last General Membership Meeting, the Board is in the process of modifying the bylaws. The primary purpose of these changes is to bring our income/expense in line with our budget/planning. Right now, we budget and you approve our budget from January to December however, we collect dues from October thru September. This lack of alignment causes much confusion over the year. We hope to correct that. At the February GMM, we will deliver draft copies and send s of the proposed changes and discuss. Then at the March GMM, we will ask the membership to vote on the proposed modifications. We will also issue proxies for those who cannot attend the March Meeting. Continued on next page

Club President Bill Broaddus took the floor to express our gratitude and appreciation to Mike Kelly and his staff for hosting the club for more than five years. Mike took a picture of the commemorative cake, which Elizabeth Demers then cut and served to all the members who had gathered for the memorable occasion. Most do and that is what your officers do for all of us. Unfortunately, we cannot and should not do it all. If everyone volunteers to do something, then the result is that no one must do a lot. There is a core group that gets actively involved but after a time, we all get burned out. That s where the rest of the membership comes in. We need others to step up and do their fair share. Therefore, I am soliciting you to volunteer to do your bit to make the club even better for everyone. Without volunteers, we cannot sustain the level of activity from the officers and other current volunteers. All the Best, Bill

3 East Coast Shag Classic Five couples from our club traveled to Wrightsville Beach, N.C for the annual East Coast Shag Classic, a four-day event. The purpose of the event, besides the great fun of meeting other shaggers and dancing to live bands, was to support Hope Abounds, a charity that assists women, children, teens and their families who are battling cancer. Highlights of the weekend included a silent auction, shag lessons and line dancing instruction. The Outer Banks contingent renewed their acquaintance with DJ Ken Jones and dance instructor Sandy Jones, who also entertained at our club s New Year s Eve Gala in Four of the biggest names in shag music thrilled the crowd. Dancers enjoyed Jim Quick and the Coastline, The Entertainers, Steve Owens & Summertime, and Band of Oz. On Sunday morning, the Hill Family Bluegrass Band topped off the memorable weekend. The Riff Tides, with our own Kent Zimmerman, will provide the fabulous 50 s music, and for a donation of just $10 (per person) you can dance, party and help the endangered sea turtles all at the same time. In addition, there will be a silent auction and raffle prizes. Your financial support will help NEST s efforts right here on the Outer Banks. Among many other efforts, last season alone, NEST volunteers identified and protected 52 sea turtle nests and guided hundreds of hatchlings safely to the ocean while providing education to beach goers about our four-flippered visitors. Please join us for the fun and participate in this incredible, local environmental cause. NEST is not publicly funded and would deeply appreciate your support. Hope to see and your friends there! New Beginner s Class Scheduled Starting March 6 th, Tommy, Joan, Jeff and Sandy will start a new Shag beginner s class. It will run for 5 weeks. The class is open to both club members and guests who want to learn the basics or feel they need a little refresher.
