1 Staff Matching The John Laing Charitable Trust matches pound for pound, generally up to 1,000, money raised by employees through their own fund-raising efforts for a charity of their choice, subject to the Trust s criteria. Applications are accepted from staff at any time throughout the year. The following pages show just a few of the many charities that have benefitted from our staff s fundraising efforts over the past year. 2 Help for Heroes - Employee Peter Shell, General Counsel On 4 March 2010 Peter Shell and his son Tim reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania after embarking at midnight to reach the summit at 19,340 feet in perhaps minus 20c and 50% of usual oxygen after 6 nights of camping at altitude in the cold. Peter said that he and Tim chose to support Help for Heroes because It is so easy to sit in our own safe and comfortable environment, and forget the enormous personal sacrifices which members of our armed forces may suffer whilst going about their duties on our behalf. It is very sobering to think what they may suffer on a bad day at the office compared to what we office workers may encounter. There are many good causes I could choose to support, but currently this one is highly topical and undertaking great work. Not only are the monetary donations highly appreciated, but the fact of giving must send a supportive message to those facing great dangers on our behalf. JLCT 1, Go Red for Richard House and Wear it Pink for Breast Cancer Care Employees - Allington House Staff In February 2010 in what has become an almost annual event, staff were invited to wear as much red as they could possibly manage for one of our favourite charities Richard House. This together with a Guess who is the Baby photo competition raised 160. An amount matched by the John Laing Charitable Trust. JLCT New York Marathon - Motor Neurone Disease Association Employee - Stuart Colvin, JLI Operations Financial Controller Stuart decided to raise funds for the charity after a close family member was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Even after a late mix-up in arrangements, Stuart enjoyed the challenge of running around 26.2 miles of his favourite city, the big Big Apple. A grand total of 1,290 was donated to the charity after the John Laing Charitable Trust matched sponsorship of 645. Stuart ran so fast the camera couldn t keep up with him and so he has supplied us with a photo of his cousin running 40 minutes behind him! JLCT

3 Teesside Hospice Pie and Pea Supper Employee - Alison Moutrey, Catering Manager, Cleveland & Durham Police Tactical Training Centre Alison together with friends organised supper with a live ska band and raised The money raised was for The Teesside Hospice in memory of Alison s friend s mother. The Hospice received 1, JLCT Guide Dogs for the Blind One Mile Swim in Open Water Employee - Carl Dix, Executive Director, Primary Plus Carl raised by not once but twice, swimming one mile in open water. The amount was matched to make a grand total of 1, for the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind. JLCT MOVEMBER November saw 8 Mo Bros from John Laing raise the hair raising amount of 2,485 doubled by the JLCT to a staggering 4,970 by simtaking up the challenge to grow facial hair. Movember rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days. JLCT 2, SPARKS Sport Aiding Medical Research for Kids Word Cup Party 2010 On 23rd June 2010, Allington House and other John Laing regional offices took some time out of their day to support England in their last World Cup Group Match against Slovenia before entering the finals the occasion was an excuse to have party, especially so as England won. Staff celebrated with beer, wine, Pimms and pizza. Allington House s Cafe 4 was in fine match mood, having been decked out with St George s Cross flags and bunting. A draw for SPARKS raised with Tim Grier winning 20 for guessing the correct time of the first goal scored! JLCT ply

4 Greatworth St Peter s Church - Employee - David Scott, Design Manager David Scott is churchwarden at his village parish church. With the cost of maintaining the c.800 year old building ever increasing and with income and attendance gradually declining, Dave took part in a sponsored cycle ride on behalf of the Historic Churches Trust raising 415 and amount duly matched by the John Laing Charitable Trust. David said Income of this nature allows us to attend to essential fabric repairs to maintain this cherished community facility. JLCT Great Ormond Street Children s Hospital - Raising the Roof - Employee - Adrian Ewer, CEO Adrian Ewer performed with his band Crisis at the Charity Gig in the City on 27 May 2010 to raise funds for the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity s Raising the Roof Appeal of which John Laing is a benefactor. The Gig raised 1,493 and this was matched by the JLCT. JLCT 1, Children with Leukaemia - Employee - Clare Fionda, HSEQ Manager Clare undertook a Combatathon on the day of the London Marathon, 25 April The event consisted of 4 hours of intense body combat and body attack aerobic exercise that was intended to mirror the effort and time it would take to complete the Marathon. Clare raised 100 which was matched by the JLCT. JLCT Macmillan Cancer Support - Employee - Angela Kenny, Project Coordinator Angela contributed to a bake sale in conjunction with Amey plc at Bristol Magistrates Court in October 2010 which raised the grand sum of an amount matched by the JLCT. 5 Derion House Children s Charity Employee - Diane Johnson, Cleaner at Horwich Police Station, Manchester On 25 July 2010 Diane raised 500 by taking up the very unusual challenge of walking across Manchester s Salford Quays in a ball! The Trust matched the amount raised and thanks to Diane, Derion House Children s Charity received 1,000. JLCT 500 OXFAM Trail Walker Employee - James Staines, Contracts Manager Parkinsons UK Employee - Kevin Mutton, JLI Operations Finance Manager Kevin ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon in memory of his grandfather who suffered from Parkinsons disease. Kevin raised 272 which was matched by the JLCT. JLCT British Red Cross Employee - Oliver Hannan, Project Manager In recognition of the excellent work of the British Red Cross, Oliver took part in the 2010 Runcorn Bridge Zipslide on 3rd October After raising 175 in sponsorship money, the amount was matched. JLCT James and a group of friends took up the The Trailwalker Challenge on 17 July 2010 and walked from 10 am through until 4 am the following morning and had by then walked 42 miles!!!! 315 was raised in sponsorship money and this was matched by the JLCT.
