Carbon dioxide enters from the atmosphere combine with hydrogen atoms to form glucose. The reaction of the dark phase is controlled by enzymes. any (7) Cellular respiration glucose is broken down during this process Glycolysis Occurs in the cytosol just outside the mitochondria. This phase requires no oxygen. 12

13 The glucose molecule (consist of 6C) is broken down step by step. Two molecules of pyruvic acid (3C) are formed. The energy rich Hydrogen atom release energy and stored in ATP. Co enzymes carry the Hydrogen atoms to the next phase Krebs cycle Only occurs if OXYGEN is present. Pyruvic acid (3C) enters the mitochondria. Pyruvic acid used in a cyclic series of reactions. Energy rich Hydrogen atoms and CO 2 is released. Energised hydrogen atoms combines with co enzymes. and transmitted to the next phase. CO 2 leaves the cell as a product of cellular respiration. Oxidative Phosphorylation H + atoms from the Krebs cycle are carried by co enzymes. H + atoms transferred from on hydrogen acceptor to the next, then energy is released Energy released combines with ADP and with a phosphate (cristae) to form ATP. Oxygen is the final hydrogen acceptor. Oxygen and TWO H + atom to form WATER H 2 O.
