Old Business Sarah Jhansen, MD Advanced Medical Sciences (AMS) Discussin Tim Lahey, MD Advanced Medical Sciences was presented and reviewed in the August meeting. It became evident that hw d we deal with the furth year curriculum regarding the gals and bjectives and hw des this curse fit int that plan. The decisin with the AMS curse is independent with the decisin regarding the furth year curriculum. The questin that came up regarding the curse is that the curse has changed drastically. Innvatin is very different then substantially changing the bjectives f a curse and the MEC needs t make a decisin n if they apprve the bjective changes and curse name change r nt. The ld bjectives and new bjectives were sent t the members after last mnth s meeting fr review. Over the past few years, Dr. Tim Lahey has been adding new sessin, nt with the intent f altering the curse bjectives but t capture the curse mre fully in Basic Science. The recmmendatin frm the review cmmittee was t change the bjectives and the name t reflect what is being taught in the curse. The sessins cntinue t address the ld curse bjectives, but the new curse bjectives are inferir t the new bjectives and better address the institutinal cmpetencies better. Dr. David Nierenberg shared sme histry behind the Basic Science individuals and hw they ver the years have cntinued t give up the fundamentals prtin f Basic Science. Dr. Nirenberg supprts the apprval f the AMS curse review given the fact that he is nly 5 mnths away, but asked that additinal basic science fundamentals be added the next time this curse is reviewed. Dr. Sarah Jhansen discussed the subgrup wh will be reviewing the furth year curriculum. Dr. Jhansen is still lking fr members. Dr. Adam Weinstein discussed the prgress and brainstrming frm the Clinical Immersin grup, and perhaps this grup culd help reintrducing their plans and help with reviewing the furth year curriculum. Dr. Cathleen Mrrw made a mtin t apprve the Year IV: AMS Curse Review and Actin Plan. The mtin was secnded by Dr. Adam Weinstein. Further discussin was had regarding the brader picture and hw will this curse fit int the furth year curriculum when d nt knw what the whle picture will lk like at this time. Dr. Cathleen Mrrw made a mtin t apprve the Year IV: AMS Curse Review and Actin Plan as prpsed with the exceptin f nt changing the curse title, and with the understanding that the bjectives will be re-reviewed after the upcming furth year curriculum review. SBM Themes Curse Review Julia Frew, MD and David Nierenberg, MD This curse ccurs in the first week f Term 1 in Year II. It currently has 22.5 curricular hurs. This curse is relatively new and has nt been previusly reviewed by the MEC. The bjectives crrelate well with the curse, with a few sessin missing sessin bjectives, this has been crrected. The curse is delivered in large grup frmat nly. There is n final exam, but are assessed in a series f quizzes, and several being assessed in depth with a final essay. During review it was fund that the evaluatins where nt the same as what has been used n ther curses. Diane Grllman has been wrking with the curse directr t ensure the evaluatin questins are being added fr next time. There was a discussin arund redundancy, and review can be helpful and nt taken beynd reviewing. Ensuring that the faculty are aware f what has been cvered in Year 1 and acknwledge planned redundancy r review. Dr. David Nierenberg mentined that there are tw ppulatins f students, ne ppulatin are the students wh say I have had that, I get it, and I dn t need that again, and the ther ppulatin that says, I remember it, I struggled with it, and I am glad that we heard it again. Dr. Harld Manning made a mtin t apprve the SBM Themes Curse Review and Actin Plan. The mtin was secnded by Stephanie Mrtn. The mtin passed by a unanimus vte. Year II: SBM Hematlgy Curse Review Elizabeth Bengtsn, MD and David Nierenberg, MD Dr. David Nierenberg presented n behalf f Dr. Elizabeth Bengtsn. This curse ccurs in the secnd Term f Year II. It currently has 37 curricular hurs. (+4 hur exam). As rated by students this ne f the tp fur t five curses. There was a majr rewrite f the curse bjectives that were included in the slides reviewed by the MEC. The gal is t have sessin bjectives fr every sessin. They are in mst f them, but nt in all f them. The exam is a bit ut f balance with the curse bjectives, but this has nw been aligned. Dr. Adam Weinstein mentined that last year that a third f the students felt that they were nt prepared fully fr the pediatrics clerkship. This included material in bth the knwledge and clinical skills area. Last year there were mdificatins t the On Dctring curse t emphasize pediatric clinical skills, and even mre changes this current year fr the 1-year students. The knwledge piece did nt have any changes in the SBM sessins, deliberately cvered and called ut the way ther significant/imprtant pediatric illness is cvered in the ther SBM curses and this may be a detriment as all students will be either managing r cnsidering ALL during their inpatient rtatins. The MEC requests that the curse create a sessin r cntract that discusses the cmmn/imprtant pediatric anemias and pediatric leukemia s, including emphasis n hw these disrders cmpare/cntrast t thse in adults. Aarn Barnes a mtin t apprve the changes t the Year II: SBM Hematlgy Curse Review and Actin Plan with the additin t the actin plan. The mtin was secnded by Stephanie Mrtn. The mtin passed by a unanimus vte. Year I: Basic Science f Micrbial Disease Paula Sundstrm, PhD and Tim Lahey, MD This curse ccurs in the spring term f Year I. It currently has 61 curricular hurs. There are 35 curse bjectives, the recmmendatin was t shrten this t 1-15 curse bjectives. This will be dne by remving bjectives that cannt be assessed, and eliminate Apprval Date: Page 4 f 5

Redundancy has been an issue with the presentatin in antibitics, it was determined that the presentatins f antibitics in the micr and pharmaclgy curse are cmplementary and that the redundancy is useful t the students. They will meet with infectin disease t address the redundancy. Sketchy Medical has been received well by the students and Laura Cusineau in Bi Libraries will lk int getting a cpy. There was a discussin arund Scial Determinants f Health and Culturally Cmpetent Care, and that there were 2 ut f 76 students wh cmpleted the evaluatins, fund that this wasn t effective. Fr tpics that include SDOH-related cverage, faculty will infrm students that discussin abut the drivers f SDOH will ccur elsewhere in the curriculum.
