In this rle, he will fcus n advancing its leadership effrts t develp a cmprehensive lifestyle medicine curriculum. The ACLM is a natinal specialty sciety fr clinicians emphasizing the use f lifestyle interventins in treating and managing disease. Dr. Katz helped develp and fund ne f the natin's first cmbined residency training prgrams in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine here at Griffin Hspital, serving frmerly as the prgram s Directr. Intrducing Cuisinicity A Website Where Gd Fd and Gd Health Cme Tgether Dr. David Katz is delighted t intrduce a new website called Cuisinicity ( This website, created by his wife, Catherine Katz, PhD, recnciles his devtin t nutritin with her passin fr great fd, and prvides recipes fr fds that are bth nutritius and delicius. The recipes are simple, cnvenient, ecnmical, and made frm whlesme ingredients. Several recipes have been featured in natinal media, including ABC News, O Magazine, Eating Well, and Preventin Magazine. Gdbye t Kim Dughty, wh wrked as a part-time Research Assciate while cmpleting her MPH degree at Suthern CT State University, and while wrking tward a Dctral degree in Public Health at the University f Massachusetts. 2 Current Prjects STILL RECRUITING! Egg Ingestin in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: Effects n Glycemic Cntrl, Anthrpmetry, Diet Quality and Cardimetablic Status. A Randmized, Cntrlled, Crssver Trial Study details: Fr many years, medical prfessinals have advised patients at risk fr cardivascular disease (CVD), including thse with diabetes, t limit intake f eggs due t their chlesterl cntent. Hwever, recent studies (including ur wn) have nt fund an assciatin between egg intake and CVD. Excluding eggs frm the diets f peple with diabetes culd lead them t eat ther fds high in starch and sugar, which culd increase their risk f CVD. Therefre, we want t learn whether eggs can be included in their diets. Our randmized cntrlled crssver study will cmpare the effects f tw ad libitum diets (ne that includes eggs per week vs. ne that excludes eggs) n hemglbin A1C, fasting bld glucse, insulin levels, bdy cmpsitin, weight, waist circumference, and diet quality in adults with diabetes. We expect t find that adults with diabetes wh include eggs in their diets will have an imprved diet quality, and imprved health-related utcme measures, cmpared t when they exclude eggs frm their diets. Wh we re recruiting: 14 mre adults wh have been diagnsed with Type 2 diabetes in the last 1 t 10 years, are verweight and have nt had any advanced cmplicatins frm diabetes. We are seeking men wh are at least 35 years ld, and wmen wh are pst-menpausal and nt n hrmne replacement therapy. Each persn wh cmpletes the study will receive $400 in cmpensatin. The time cmmitment is apprximately 34 weeks. Hw t apply: If yu r smene yu knw is interested in participating, cntact Ms. Rckiy Ayettey by at rckiy.ayettey@yalegriffinprc.rg r by phne at ext PROJECT UPDATE - Valley Initiative t Advance Health & Learning in Schls (VITAHLS) This initiative, led by the PRC and Griffin Hspital in partnership with Valley Schl Districts, invlves develping, implementing, evaluating and sustaining a cmprehensive Valley-wide schl-based prgram fcusing n nutritin and physical activity amng PreK-12 students. Our partners are the Ansnia, Derby, Seymur, and Sheltn schl districts, and Emmett O Brien Reginal Technical Schl. Since ur last prgress reprt in September, we have additinal news t reprt. Pilt Test f Rad t Health Nutritin Prgram During the schl year, the PRC develped a pilt versin f a nutritin educatin prgram called The Rad t Health, intended fr middle and/r high schl students. The gals are t mtivate, teach, and help students t develp skills t make healthful fd chices and adpt a physically active lifestyle. The pilt prgram fcused n the themes f fd as fuel, chsing healthful fds, empty calrie fds, prtin cntrl, fast fds, active lifestyles, and nutritin & perfrmance. We prvided a lessn plan and prgram materials t health teachers in 4 schls in Seymur and Sheltn, wh taught the prgram t their students. Prgram materials included a PwerPint slide shw, hmewrk assignments, and instructins fr hands-n activities fcusing n making healthful fd chices. The length f prgram deliver was typically 4 t 5 class perids. Fr the evaluatin, students cmpleted a pre/pst nutritin knwledge quiz and pinin survey, and teachers cmpleted a prcess evaluatin and pinin survey. The 231 students wh cmpleted the quiz had a statistically significant gain in nutritin knwledge. Thse wh cmpleted the survey prvided many suggestins t imprve the prgram, including shrtening the length f the slide

3 shw, making it mre entertaining, eliminating any repetitin f prgram cntent, including mre facts and tips, and adding vides and additinal hands-n activities. Teachers prvided similar recmmendatins in their survey. Additinal suggestins frm teachers included: making the lessns stand-alne s they can select the mst useful lessns frm a menu f ptins t cmplement what they already teach; including current trends in nutritin; and prviding mre indepth infrmatin if the prgram is intended fr high schl students. We are nw incrprating this feedback as we wrk with PRC student interns t revise the prgram in time fr it t be ffered in VITAHLS schls during the secnd half f the schl year. Preliminary Results f NuVal Nutritinal Scring System Pilt Study in Ansnia Schls During The schl year, the Ansnia Public Schls tk part in an implementatin and evaluatin f the NuVal Nutritinal Scring System in schl cafeterias, funded by a grant frm the CT State Department f Educatin. The NuVal system assigns a scre f between 1 and 100 t fds based n their verall nutritinal value (the higher the scre, the better the nutritinal value). Fr the interventin in Ansnia, NuVal scres were psted fr mst menu items available t students in the cafeterias f all 4 schls, and als fr vending machine items at the middle and high schls. PRC Research Assciate Kim Dughty cnducted the prject evaluatin, with assistance frm public health students frm Suthern CT State University. They cllected pre- and pst- interventin data, including the types f fds selected by students in the cafeteria line, and which fds they actually ate rather than discarded in the trash. They als cnducted fcus grups with students t learn abut their awareness, understanding, and reprted use f the system. Preliminary analyses did nt reveal any significant impact f the interventin n students selectin f entrees, drinks, r sandwich tppings. There was a small but significant increase in selectin f side dishes in the lwest NuVal scre quintile (5% f purchases at baseline vs. 8% pst-interventin). We believe this change may be due t differences in sme menu items ffered in this categry between the 2 time pints. We fund that many f the fd items in the schl cafeterias, despite meeting federal and state nutritin guidelines, had NuVal scres that were surprisingly lw, thereby limiting pprtunities t chse higher-scring items. Therefre, we did nt expect t see substantial change in sales f fds accrding t their NuVal scres. Nevertheless, we did bserve a psitive change in student selectins f mre healthful salad tppings such as grilled chicken. Our Ansnia partners n this prject were Dminick Glia, Fd Service Directr, and Diana Brancat, Schl Readiness Crdinatr. Prject Findings Faith in Cking Skills (Pilt Study t Evaluate Nutritin-based Cking Wrkshps in a Faith-based Setting) Interventin: We pilt-tested a set f 4 healthy cking wrkshps with 10 members f 2 United Methdist church cngregatins in Seymur. The gals were t imprve knwledge, skills, and efficacy in preparing and serving healthful fds. Each 2-hur wrkshp was taught by a prfessinal chef, incrprated sme nutritin infrmatin, and fcused n 4 t 5 recipes. Participants wrked in teams that prepared 1 r 2 f the recipes fr a wrkshp. We did nt charge a fee t attend. Outcme Measure: We cnducted a fcus grup t determine prgram feasibility and acceptability.

4 Results: Mst participants riginally thught the prgram wuld fcus n making traditinal recipes mre healthful. Hwever, they appreciated the pprtunity t try new recipes, btain fd preparatin tips, learn abut special cking tls and equipment, and sample the fds. While participants enjyed being able t taste several fd dishes in each wrkshp, sme felt they missed ut n the pprtunity t practice preparing all the dishes, since each team made a dish frm a different recipe. They wuld have preferred having fewer recipes per wrkshp, and having everyne prepare the same dishes. Participants felt there was enugh f a fcus n the healthy aspect f the wrkshps. Many felt they did nt need t knw the nutritinal cntent f a recipe, as lng as it was healthful. Perceived barriers t using the recipes at hme included the cst and number f ingredients, time spent in preparing the recipes, r family members dislike/lack f interest in the fds. With regard t prgram sustainability, participants felt that their wn church budgets lacked adequate funding t cver prgram csts, and that charging an attendance fee might be apprpriate as lng as it was affrdable. They said cking wrkshps ffered in a church setting shuld pen t everyne, rather than being limited t their wn cngregatins r thse f the same faith. Next steps: We expect t use the results t revise the prgram fr use with in ther faith-based settings. Fr mre infrmatin: Cntact Judy Treu by at judy.treu@yalegriffinprc.rg, r by phne at Music Vide Health Educatin Prject Fcus Grup Findings Purpse/Prject: T help guide the creatin f a vide library/curriculum t encurage tweens & teens t adpt healthy lifestyles, we cnducted 10 fcus grups with middle and high schl students t btain their reactins t 6 health prmtin vides. Three f the vides were 3-4 minutes in length and used rap music, ther music, and/r dance t cnvey messages abut making healthful fd chices; the ther 3 vides were 30-secnd public service annuncements that used metaphrs (e.g. bullying, lss f teeth) t cnvey anti-smking messages. The fcus grups were held in May and June 2014 at schls and Bys & Girls Clubs in Ansnia and Sheltn. We asked questins t learn students pinins f the vides, their perceptins f the vides age-apprpriateness, their preferences fr vide length and style, and their recmmendatins fr prducing ur wn vides. Results Overall, students seemed t prefer vides that are shrt in length (length f a cmmercial r PSA), and that get their pint acrss withut cntinually repeating the message. Students varied in respnse t the use f music and dance, with sme enjying it and sme finding it distracting frm the main message. In mst cases, messages delivered this way seemed t be less inspiring f actual change than thse that fcused n facts and n ptentially harmful utcmes f making chices that culd negatively impact health. Sme students liked upbeat music and messages if cmbined with guidelines n what t d. Cmpared t 8 th grade and high schl students, students in 6 th and 7 th grade seemed t have a difficult time understanding metaphrical messages and t prefer mre literal messages. Advice fcused n making vides shrt and t the pint and relatable t their age grup.

5 Next steps: We expect t use the results t develp a health vide library, and cmbine it with a set f guided discussins and educatinal tls fr use in schls and ther settings. Fr mre infrmatin: Cntact Judy Treu by at judy.treu@yalegriffinprc.rg, r by phne at Grant Prpsals and Awards RECENTLY FUNDED Leveraging Glbal Health Partnerships and Best Practices fr U.S. Special Ppulatins The CDC is creating a Glbal and Territrial Health Research Netwrk (GTHRN) that will serve as a platfrm fr cllabratin between PRCs and public health stakehlders t learn best practices frm innvative public health appraches t chrnic disease preventin and health prmtin frm arund the wrld, and apply them t vulnerable U.S. ppulatins. The Yale-Griffin PRC has recently received Special Interest Prject (SIP) funding frm the CDC t serve as a Cllabrating Center f the GTHRN. The verall gal is t leverage innvative public health appraches frm arund the wrld and apply them t address health disparities in ur lcal cmmunities. Haq Nawaz, MD, MPH, Chair f the Department f Preventive Medicine at Griffin Hspital, will serve as the Primary Investigatr, and Victria Cstales, MD, MPH will prvide verall supervisin. Valentine Njike, MD, MPH will serve as data manager and lead analyst. Dmestic cllabratrs include the Cmmunity Health Center, Inc., the Glbal Alliance fr Chrnic Disease, and the Yale Glbal Health Initiative. Glbal cllabratrs will be available t assist prject staff in translating prgrams t U.S. cmmunities and share infrmatin, expertise, and prject materials. Effects f ISOThrive Supplement n Bdy Weight, Bdy Cmpsitin, Hunger/Satiety and Cardiac Risk Measures in Overweight Adults We have recently received funding frm ISOThrive LLC fr a study t evaluate the effects f its prebitic supplement - essentially, a fd surce fr beneficial intestinal bacteria - n calric intake, bdy weight, bdy cmpsitin, and ther utcme measures in verweight adults. Since surveys shw that up t 45% f wmen and 20% f men in the U.S. have used a dietary supplement fr weight lss, it is imprtant t identify supplements that can be used safely and effectively t supprt weight lss effrts. The ingredients in the ISOThrive supplement can ptentially prmte the grwth f bacteria in the gut that play a rle in digestin, and can exert a bulking effect that culd help prmte a feeling f fullness. These ingredients appear t be safe and well-tlerated, but have nt been evaluated tgether as part f a rigrus clinical trial. Therefre, we are prpsing a randmized, cntrlled, duble-blind trial t cmpare the effects f 3 mnths f supplementatin with ISOThrive vs. a placeb n calric intake and bdy weight in 76 verweight adults. Secndary utcme measures include self-reprted feelings f hunger/satiety, bdy cmpsitin, bdy mass index (BMI), waist circumference, bld pressure, bld lipid cncentratins, fasting bld glucse, dyspepsia symptms, and self-reprted quality f life. Safety will be assessed by measures f cmplete bld cunt, kidney and liver functin and mnitring f side effects.
