The UI College of Dentistry participated again at the second annual President s Block Party, held on Sunday evening, August 19, 2012, at UI President Sally Mason s residence. The Block Party is the culmination of the On Iowa! Welcome Week for incoming freshmen to UI. The party features music, food, entertainment, and just three booths the College of Dentistry s booth is one of the lucky few. Thanks to 21 volunteer dental students, staff, faculty and administrators, nearly 3,000 undergrad students received a personal welcome as well as COD magnets; dental floss; and a bookmark highlighting clever uses for dental floss, oral health tips, and contact information about becoming a patient at the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. Katie Naberhaus s own memories of the welcome party when she was a UI freshman were what prompted the third-year dental student to volunteer at the College s booth. Dean Johnsen was pleased with the spirit of the event and the visibility the Block Party offers the College. The dean commented that he could see that everyone was having fun -- even the volunteers! After the event, Carly Sieger (Clinic Administration) said you could feel the excitement in the air, and she was happy to be part of such a welcoming community. Mary Lynn Eckert brought her husband, Michael, a professor in the School of Music, to help; they promised to return next year! (Block party, continued on page 4)

Registration is now open for volunteers who want to participate in Iowa s Mission of Mercy (IMOM). The date for the College of Dentistry s participation is Saturday, October 6. This year s IMOM will take place in Davenport, Iowa. We will be without senior dental students this year because they will be taking the mannequin portion of CRDTS that day. For this reason, we hope that participation by faculty and staff will be more this year than in the past. We need dentists, assistants, hygienists, and other lay volunteers. There should be plenty to do for everyone! There will be more information coming regarding transportation, etc., but at this time please go ahead and register online and notify me (Dr. Kanellis) when you have done so. This is to make sure I have a comprehensive list of who is covered by the College of Dentistry s malpractice. The online registration site is at www.iowamom.org. Please contact Dr. Patty Meredith (patricia-meredith@uiowa.edu) or me (michaelkanellis@uiowa.edu) if you have questions. Thanks, Dr. Mike Kanellis
