Other instructors: Dr. Amjad Shatarat Office number 05 Office phone Course Description: **This course covers the basic anatomy of the complicated region of the Head and Neck and highlights the clinical relevance of the structures considered. ***This course emphasizes basic Neuroanatomical structures and facts that are of clinical importance necessary for the practice of dental profession. 9. Course aims and outcomes: By the end of this course _students should be able to have a thorough knowledge of the vital anatomical structures in this region relevant to their future profession 2_students should be able to interpret the many symptoms and signs presented by a neurological patient and may confidently make a diagnosis, and prophesy appropriate treatment 2

Identify the major sutures of the skull. Clinical anatomy by regions, snell Face and Scalp 2 Identify the structure of the Scalp and muscles of facial expressions. Summarize vascular and nervous supply of the scalp and face. Clinical anatomy by systems snell Cranial Cavity (I) Cranial Cavity (II) The Cranial Nerves 3 4 Describe the meninges covering the brain, their vascular and nervous supply. Illustrate the venous blood sinuses of the cranial cavity and understand the direction of venous blood flow. List major parts and cavities of the brain and explain the direction of flow of CSF. Recognize the blood supply of the brain. Clinical Oriented Anatomy Temporal Fossa 5 Locate the origin and function of the twelve cranial nerves. Label boundaries, communication and contents of the temporal fossa. The Mandible and the Muscles of mastication 6 List muscles of mastication, their origin and insertion, vascular and nervous supply and the action they exert on the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ). 3

5 The Temporomandibular joint 7 Identify the TMJ, its articulating surfaces, capsule, ligaments and associated movements. Infra-temporal and pterygopalatine fossa 8 Label boundaries, communication and contents of the infra-temporal and pterygopalatine fossa. The Neck 9 Locate different layers of the fascial coverings the neck and the major cutaneous nerves supplying the area. Distinguish the triangular divisions of the neck, their boundaries and contents. Nose and Para-nasal sinuses The Mouth and palate 0 Understand the parts of the nose, the external nose and the nasal cavity, their blood and nerve supply. Recognize the different walls of the nasal cavity and the structures within. Understand the mouth, teeth and tongue as part of the digestive system showing consideration for their nerve supply. Enumerate extrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue, their origin, insertion, action and nerve supply. Pharynx 2 Keep count of the pharynx, its muscular mass, interior divisions and neurovascular supply. Larynx 3 Describe the larynx citing its framework (cartilages, ligaments, membrane and muscles) Identify the boundaries of the inlet and the divisions of the cavity of the larynx. The Eye 4 Describe the orbital cavity, its boundaries and openings. Identify the nerves and blood vessels of the orbit. Explain structure of the lacrimal 4

6 apparatus and its autonomic nervous supply. The Ear 5 Recognize the divisions of the ear with their associated structures, nerve and blood supply. Understand the mechanism of hearing. Central nervous system Introduction to Neuroanatomy Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) Spinal Cord Ascending and Descending Tracts Ventricular system Blood supply of brain and spinal cord Meninges Describe the organization and basic functions of the nervous system (Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems CNS & PNS). Distinguish between nuclei and ganglia, nerves and tracts, gray matter and white matter. 2 Understand the organization of ANS (Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems). Distinguish the gross appearance and structure (Gray and White matters) of the spinal cord. 3 Briefly describe the anatomical organization of the Ascending and Descending tracts. Understand the functions of ascending tracts in pain, temperature, touch and pressure sensation. 4 Describe the ventricular system of the brain, its communications. Understand the formation, function and direction of flow of the Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF). List the main arteries and veins that supply and drain the brain and spinal. Distinguish the three meningeal coverings that surround the brain and spinal cord (Dura, Arachnoid and Pia maters). Brainstem (I) 5 Identify and describe the parts of the brainstem. 5

7 Define the general external features for each part of the brainstem. Brainstem (II) 6 Recognize the important internal structures of each part and describe their functions.. Cerebellum 7 Identify and describe the parts of the cerebellum. Describe the internal structure of the cerebellum, taking notice of the afferent and efferent fibers. Cerebrum 8 Differentiate the subdivisions of the cerebrum (Diencephalon, Telencephalon, and cerebral hemispheres). Describe general external features of cerebral hemispheres (Lobes, sulci and gyri). Reticular Formation 9 Describe the general arrangement, afferent and efferent projections and Limbic System function of the Reticular Formation. Briefly describe the structure of the Limbic System (Hippocumpal formation, Amygdaloid Nucleus and the connecting pathways of the system). Basal ganglia Identify parts of the Basal Ganglia (Corpus Striatum, Amygdalid nucleus and the claustrum.) Thalamus and Hypothalamus 0 Distinguish the general appearance of the Thalamus, its subdivisions, connections and function. Cranial Nerves (I) Identify the name and number of the first (6) Cranial Nerves. Cranial Nerves (II) 2 Identify name and number of the last (6) Cranial Nerves. Cranial Nerves Injury (I) 3 Define the major clinical manifestations of each cranial nerve injury. 6

Teaching Methods and Assignments: Development of ILOs is promoted through the following teaching and learning methods: -Small Group discussions - Group presentations - Student demonstration activities (class presentations and Practical sessions demonstrations) 22. Evaluation Methods and Course Requirements: Midterm Exam Short Exam Final Exam Course evaluation forms 23. Course Policies: A-Attendance policies: Students are expected to attend all class sessions as listed on the course calendar. Students are not allowed to be absent for more than 5% of the credit hours of the course. All students are required to wear a lab coat during the laboratory session. B- Absences from exams and handing in assignments on time: Make-up appeals are considered only for students who provide documentation of a compelling reason for missing the exam. C- Health and safety procedures: college Members and students must at all times, conform to Health 7

9 and Safety rules and procedures. D- Honesty policy regarding cheating, plagiarism, misbehavior: As a student in this course (and at this university) you are expected to maintain high degrees of professionalism, commitment to active learning and participation in this class and also integrity in your behavior in and out of the classroom.
