43 rd Annual Conference Conference Schedule for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Join us in Orange County November 3 rd 5 th, 2017 Thanks to our sponsor: Thanks to our exhibitors: Biocomp Research Institute Crowne Plaza, 3131 Bristol Street, Costa Mesa, CA
Conference Schedule Friday, November 3 rd Pre-Conference Workshops: 1:00 5:00 pm 5:30-7:30 pm General Introduction to Biofeedback Peripherals Frank Degregorio This workshop is for researchers and health professionals who want to learn how to use peripheral biofeedback technology. The modalities that will be the focus of the session are Surface Electromyography (SEMG), Respiration, Temperature, Skin Conductance, Heart Rate (from blood volume pulse and electrocardiogram), and Heart Rate Variability. A general overview of the physiological basis for each peripheral measurement will be provided using the BioGraph Infiniti software and hardware. Participants will have an 'hands-on'' experience using the different modalities in conjunction with audio and visual multimedia biofeedback displays. CEs: 4 hours President s Reception Social Mixer and Networking Appetizers and Cash Bar Promenade Room I and II Neurolimbic Maturation Assessment and Default Network Training Dr. David Kaiser Introduction to Default Network Training (DNT) and observe how to evaluate brain maturation of 55 brain areas, revealing both strengths and weaknesses, using 19-channel EEG recordings. We balance cerebral blood flow between network hubs and left/right homologues with EEG-based hemodynamic neurotherapy. We also reduce habits of excessive neocortical blood flow in general, which appears to be a common source to many neuropsychiatric and behavioral problems. The use of ILF (ultradian rhythm training) in conjunction with DNT will also be discussed. CEs: 4 hours
Saturday, November 4 th 7:30 9:00 am 9:00 12 pm Morning sessions have variable times, please check time of each talk 9-10:30 am Lightning Talks John Mekrut Juan Acosta-Urquidi Grant Randolph Continental Breakfast Promenade Room 1 and am From Good to Great: The Use of Biofeedback in Employee Assistance Programs as a tool to build Resilience in the Workplace Beth Argus and Drs. Cherbosque and Sideroff A mission of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) is to enhance the wellbeing of employees. A challenge in EAP is to offer effective strategies in a few sessions. Among the most important issues many employee consult EAP is to receive help in their ability to manage change, stress and uncertainty in their professional role. As a way to answer this need the UCLA Staff and Faculty Counseling Center developed a 3-7 session psychoeducation program geared to provide employees at UCLA practical skills to increase resilience, decrease stress, anxiety and depression. This program is also being used to help individuals participating in the UCLA WorkStrong Program, which is a program designed to promote recovery and prevent future workplace injuries. Attendees will learn how to design a short-term program using Biofeedback (HRV, EMG, Temp, Respiration, SC) and other Stress Management tools to increase psychophysiological awareness and self-governance skills. CE: 1 hour
10-11 am Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Dr. Alberto Odor Artificial Intelligence (AI) affects all aspects of our life. Medicine is one area that AI improves. We use it for prediction, personalized medicine, natural language processing, decision support systems, etc. We will see the principles of AI and its use in medicine through interactive videos and didactic discussions. 10:30-12 pm Student Lightning Talks Leighton Gramp Lucia and Cody Nicolas 12:30 1:30 pm Sit down Lunch and Raffle Prize! Promenade Room 1 and 2 Business Meeting In Memory of Elmer Green and Chuck Davis CE: 1 hour pm Ask the Experts Panel: How to become a professional Drs. Gary Schummer, Amir Ramezani, and Keerthy Sunder 1:30 2:45 pm The Imperative Usage of Self-Regulation Technologies in Health Care Dr. Siegfried Othmer Failure modes exist in the realm of human disease, disorder, and dysfunction that do not lend themselves to description in terms of a classic medical model, nor do they yield to prevailing medical remedies. This is the realm of functional disorders, of learned dysfunctions, and of maladaptive brain plasticity. The failure to recognize the expansive dimensions of such learned dysfunctions has enormous consequences in terms of the needless exacerbation of human suffering, the misapplication of medical remedies, Neurocognitive Assessment as a Means of Quantifying the Efficacy of Neurofeedback Therapy Dr. Yael Katz Neurocognitive testing is a way to measure brain function non-invasively. It uses paperand-pencil or computerized tasks to assess important aspects of cognition: attention, memory, language, reaction time, perception, and so on. The different tests are specifically crafted to measure particular aspects of brain function giving, researchers and clinicians a powerful microscope into what s happening under the hood. The tests are objective, and
and the resulting overall cost of medical care. The Self-Regulation Technologies constitute the imperative remedy for these conditions. That is to say, no effective alternative exists. With the recent addition of infra-low frequency neurofeedback to the inventory of potential remedies, the obligatory embrace of selfregulation technologies within healthcare is becoming increasingly compelling. Examples of medical interest ranging from traumatic brain injury to the dementias will be covered in the talk. Particular emphasis will be placed on developmental disorders and on addictions. the scores give a way to compare a person s functioning to the rest of the population, or against themselves at a previous time. In this way, neurocognitive testing gives a standardized way to get a snapshot of brain health and track changes. 2:45pm -3pm Break 3pm- 4:15pm Neuroplasticity of the Gut and Brain - Integrated approaches to Neuromodulation Dr Keerthy Sunder The bi-directional nature of Gut-Brain Dysregulation can use a top down approach to brain wave optimization targeting neuroplasticity as well as a bottom up approach utilizing nutritional supplementation to target gut brain barrier integrity and neuroplasticity. Explore how targeting brain waves to achieve self-regulation utilizing customized neurofeedback assists with neuroplasticity at both the gut and brain levels by a top down approach. And examine how targeting nutritional and Immune deficits to achieve gut brain barrier integrity assists with neuroplasticity at both the gut and brain levels by a bottom up approach. Pain Management and Virtual Reality Dr. Naileshni Singh Mental health can suffer when patient experience pain. Additionally, those with chronic pain may develop or aggravate symptoms of depression or anxiety. These individuals often report more pain with less efficacy achieved from common pain treatments. Opioids medications are also more prescribed in those with mental health issues and may be misused. There are effective treatments for patients with depression, anxiety and co-morbid pain which often focus on psychological treatments. One technique to address the above includes the use of virtual reality to assist patients while going medical procedures and as a complement to psychological treatments. Interventional pain procedures such as epidural steroid injections and trigger point injections are effective yet some patients may have anxiety before or during the procedures. Research shows that addressing psychological factors prior to a procedure may improve the post-procedural outcome (Rolving et al., 2016;
Johnson & Vogele, 1993; Mumford, Schlesinger, & Glass, 1982). Virtual reality may be low risk option to assist patients in reducing anxiety while receiving potentially painful procedures or treatments. The applicability to this type of therapy is wide reaching. 4:15-4:30pm 4:30-5:45pm Trait and State Parameters in qeeg Dr. David Kaiser Break QEEG and Neurofeedback for Detection, Treatment, and Management of TBI with Individuals and Athletes Reliability and validity of popular EEG parameters for clinical assessment and rationale for relying on only spectral entropy and theta unity for assessing brain function and development. Dr. Michael Linden Recently, football players have been developing dementia and CTE from repeated head injuries. There is urgency for more precise and accurate methods for assessing concussions, TBI and dementia in athletes. Research is demonstrating qeeg can be sensitive for diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Neurofeedback can be an effective treatment for concussions and head injuries in athletes of all ages. Neurofeedback has been used for many years in numerous sports to decrease the symptoms of concussions and TBI. Budzinsky studied the effects on older adults with dementia and termed it Brain Brightening and Palmquist recently replicated the results. Ultra Pulse Low Voltage Stimulation is currently being studied with retired NFL players with Dementia and showing promising results. Neurofeedback for concussions/tbi can be individualized and lead to not only quicker return to play, but emotional, cognitive and memory improvements. 5:45 6:30 pm
Drinks and Chat Social Mixer and Networking 6:30-8:30pm Dr. Omid Naim Keynote Speaker Dinner Banquet and Raffle Prize- Promenade Room 1 and 2 Sunday, November 5 th 7:00 9:00am 8-9am 9:00 10:15 am Continental Breakfast Promenade Room 1 and 2 Effortless Abdominal Breathing for Resolving Pelvic Floor Pain, Anxiety, and Gastrointestinal Distress Dr. Erik Peper Effortless diaphragmatic breathing can reduce gastrointestinal discomfort, pain during intercourse, and epileptic seizures. Breathing is more than increasing HRV. The breathing training includes trapezius/scale EMG and pelvic floor/transverse abdominal inhibition during inhalation and pelvic floor activation during exhalation. Physiological monitoring also includes respiratory strain gauges, peripheral temperature and blood volume pulse. When participants practice these this approach with imagery and generalization, numerous stress related disorders decrease. Kathryn Kimball-Open Focus 1 CE Experiential Activity Mindful Self-Compassion in Applied Psychophysiology Dr. Amir Ramezani This presentation outlines the psychological and physiological changes when practicing the three mental states that involve mindfulness, compassion for others, and compassion for the self. At the heart of the training, concepts of presence, attunement, and self-ascontext/relational-self will be discussed and practiced. Concepts will be translated to clinical practice and to the management of psychiatric and chronic medical conditions. The psychophysiological protocol is used to demonstrate concepts.
10:15-10:30 am Break 10:30-11:45 am Mobile HRV: Using Heart rate variability biofeedback outside the office to reduce blood pressure and increase wellness Yair Lurie You will learn how to use ambulatory heart rate variability biofeedback outside of the office and understand how HRV is affected by various behaviors. I will describe the psychophysiology of emotions and hypertension and teach you how to collect and analyze mobile heart rate variability data. You will learn various ways to monitor hypertension and assess the benefits of mindful breathing and heart rate variability biofeedback on a person s health. CEs:1.25 Integrating QEEG in Clinical Practice Dr. Gary Schummer The neurofeedback field is comprised of a diversity of experts; however, all of the funding, research, theory, and methods that are discussed are ultimately judged by the degree to which they facilitate cost-effective treatments. In spite of 50 years of research, neurofeedback remains an emerging treatment paradigm that has yet to be fully accepted by mainstream healthcare providers and third party insurance carriers. To facilitate the advancement of our field, a best practice model has been promoted that includes a proper understanding and integration of a neurometric assessment tool called quantitative electroencephalography (qeeg). This talk will provide an overview of information to help attendees understand fundamental concepts utilized in the qeeg and discuss various ways to successfully integrate this neuroimaging technique in order to help guide the development of more effective protocols. 11:45 am- 12pm Closing Remarks Thank you! CEs:1.25
