2 Hallelujah Concert 2009 The pupils from both fourth classes had a marvellous day in the R.D.S. Dublin on Saturday 12 th December. After many weeks of intensive rehearsal, thirty-five pupils left Lismore under the supervision of Ms. Hennessy, Mrs. O Mahony, Mr. Prendergast, Terry Whelan, Siobhan Leahy, Mrs. Geary and Ms. Buck. The repertoire was varied and included songs from Abba, Bugsy Malone, Irish ballads, Mo Ghile Mear and a pop medley. Our choir entertained the audience with their dance routines and were in receipt of many compliments afterwards. The guest artists included The Billy Barry Stage School, The Angels, Urban Strides and VV Browne. Our compere for the afternoon was Gigi Morley. On our way home we had a delicious dinner at the Manor Hotel, Abbeyleix. Thanks to the seventy-seven family members who came to Dublin to support us. It was a wonderful day! Ms. Buck s second class entertained the school and parents with a wonderful version of Michael Jackson s Thriller. The dance routines were excellent. Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh, Lios Mor, Co. 3 Christmas Productions The Elves and the Shoemaker. Congratulations to the pupils of sixth class who presented a wonderful production of The Elves and The Shoemaker in Lismore Heritage Centre. This was a great experience for the pupils as they were involved in the production process, auditioning, devising programmes, advertising, and costume design. Well done on a very enjoyable performance. First Class Nativity The children in Mrs Lonergan s class entertained us all with their Nativity play Born in a Barn. It was lovely to see all the young children getting so involved and really mastering their lines. All the parents thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Senior Infants Nativity Senior infants explored the plight of a little angel called Whoops a Daisy who always encounters difficulty carrying out assignments. The innkeeper had his problems too. There was some lovely singing and acting in this play. Well done! Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh, Lios Mor, Co. Phort Lairge. Ph. / Fax No E Mail Lismoreprimsch.ias@eircom.net Page 3
4 Christmas Trip to the Cinema Third and Fifth classes went to the cinema in Dungarvan to see The Nativity. Junior Infants to 2 nd class also went to the cinema. Junior & Senior Infants and 1 st class went to see Fantastic Mr. Fox and 2 nd class saw A Christmas Carol. They had a wonderful morning there. Children helping Children Some very responsible pupils in sixth class organised a cake sale in the school to raise funds for the charity Children Helping Children. Initially, they advertised the event and then they calculated the amount of confectionary they would need and finally baked their produce. They had a fantastic selection of confectionary available from chocolate cake, cookies, shortbread, rice krispies buns to jelly in plastic containers. All tastes and pallets were catered for. They even held a raffle for a gingerbread house. These enterprising girls know how to raise money! Congratulations on raising 400 for the charity. Success at Credit Union Poster Competition Congratulations to Celia Cullinane and John Kennefick who both came first in their categories at local level. Celia and John were presented with their prizes in school. The presentation night in Cappoquin had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather. John enjoyed further success at chapter level in Clonmel. He was presented with his prize at a ceremony in Clonmel on Saturday December 5 th. His entry is gone to Dublin to be adjudicated at All Ireland level. Best of luck John! Operation Christmas Child The boxes collected from our school will be delivered to poor children in Romania this Christmas. In all one hundred and ninety-five boxes were collected from our school. Thanks to all who contributed so generously. Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh, Lios Mor, Co. Phort Lairge. Ph. / Fax No E Mail Lismoreprimsch.ias@eircom.net Page 4
5 St. Vincent de Paul Hampers During the last two weeks the children have donated large quantities of non-perishable items to the hamper appeal. This food will be distributed to families in the locality. Science Week This year the Heritage Centre organised another event in conjunction with Science week. the emphasis was on sustainable energy with particular reference to wind and solar energy and the importance of recycling. This was very interesting and informative for both fifth classes who attended the event organised by Arlene Kenny of the Heritage Centre. Santa Sale Once again, members of the Parent s Council set up a Christmas shop in the hall. All gifts were wrapped and gift tags added making Christmas shopping a stress free experience for the young customers. There was a festive atmosphere in the hall created by the decorations and the music. The children were delighted with their purchases all of which were priced at 3. Thanks to all the parents Visit from Astronomy Ireland On Thursday November 19, Joseph Durrin from Meath came to Bunscoil Bhóthar na Naomh. He gave a wonderful presentation on the world of astronomy to the children in their class groupings. The photographic footage was exceptional quality. Mr. Durrin had graphs showing the comparisons in size and mass of all the elements of the solar system. He was also able to answer accurately the diverse questions posed by the interested pupils. It was a joy to see one so knowledgeable at work. Santa s little helpers!!!!!!! Joseph Durrin from Astronomy Ireland Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh, Lios Mor, Co. Phort Lairge. 6 Gymnastic Classes We are very grateful to our Parent s Council for subsidising a six week gymnastic course for all classes. This is a very specialist area of the curriculum and it is wonderful to have experienced instructors coming to the school. The children only had to pay 3 each. Building Extension Currently tenders are being examined for the extension to our school. It is hoped that work will commence in the spring. Swine Flu Vaccinations We expect the HSE to contact us early in the New Year regarding vaccinations for swine flu. Normal procedures will be adhered to where parents will receive notice of a date and consent will be requested. New Parents Council We welcome the recently elected Parents Council. JI Paul Feeney Ber Coughlan (Ass. Secretary) SI Keith Hornibrook Justina Flynn (Treasurer) 1 st Class Gerry Lennox (Chairperson) Becky O Keeffe (Ass. Parents Council Notes. The incoming members of the parent s council would like to thank the outgoing members and some members whom will remain with us, for the tremendous work they have done over the past three years. No doubt we will continue to ensure that the lives of all the children in the school will benefit from the generous support you and your families give throughout the year. Through your voluntary contributions collected every Friday, we are continually helping to improve the facilities and activities which will further enhance the lives of our children. May we take this opportunity to wish the children, parents/guardians, the wider community, our secretary, the teachers, our principal, special needs assistants, our parish priests and the trustees a Peaceful Happy Christmas. 7 After receiving a leaflet about children helping children, an idea was started about holding a bake sale to raise money for charity. We started baking a few days beforehand and soon the day came. On Wednesday the 2 nd of December we set up our stands in the hall and sold jelly, crepes, cakes, biscuits and juice to juniors, seniors, 1 st class and 2 nd class. And on Friday the 4 th of December we sold the remaining treats to 3 rd class, 4 th class, 5 th class and to the remaining pupils of 6 th class. We would like to thank all those who helped us and Mr Prendergast who made it all possible for us. Finally we would like to add that we raised nearly and all the proceeds have been given to Concern. By Sorcha Leary and Saoirse O Gorman Christmas Morning Have a Happy Christmas! Early in the morning before dawn I woke. I was so excited. When I got dressed I checked my stocking there was sweets. I went to the kitchen. There was a present. When I found my name tag it was exciting. I tore open my present, it was a car. I played with it. After playing with my toys I watched a DVD. I heard a noise in the kitchen. It was my sister Clare she was having her breakfast. I went in and gave her a gift, she was delighted. She wasn t surprised that I played with my toys already. Me and Clare went and watched the television. Then we were all up. We were all happy. The Snowman On Christmas Eve it started to snow. But it was too late to go outside. I hoped it would be there in the morning and it was. I went outside and everywhere was covered in snow. I started to roll up a big ball of snow it got too heavy so my sister and my friend helped. Then I rolled up another two balls of snow. It was very cold outside so as soon as I built it I decorated it. I put two lumps of coal for the eyes and a carrot for the nose. I put a hat and a scarf on it as well. By Margaret Tobin 5 th class By John O Donnell 5 th Class Santa s Journey One Christmas Eve Santa was really busy getting the toys packed. All the children are excited. All the elves are making loads of presents. Mrs Claus is putting cookies, biscuits cake and milk in the sleigh. Rudolph and all the other reindeers are all giddy and excited for the big journey. Not so long the sleigh went flying into the sky. All the elves waved good boy to Santa. Soon the sleigh was gone. Santa would take out a map sometimes to show where he would be going. Soon Santa went down a chimney. All the reindeers waited on the roof. Santa put presents under the Christmas tree. Then he went back up the chimney. Into another house. In no time at all every child had toys, presents and gifts for tomorrow. So Santa headed back to the North Pole. By Mary O Brien. 8 Sports Corner Boys Primary School County Football Final To prepare for our County final we had a practice match against Tallow at home and away venues. The first day Tallow took the spoils, but by the second day we were back to our winning ways defeating them by a margin of 15 points. That boosted our confidence a lot for the County Final which was played in Bushy Park on a bitterly cold and wet day. It took along time for us and Ballygunner to settle, but on the stroke of half time Steven Mangan found his range with a stunning free kick. Lismore led at the interval by a single point, Lismore 0-1 Ballygunner 0-0. The second half saw Lismore become more and more dominant, holding possession and scoring the all important scores. Goals on the day came from Jack Prendergast, Eoghan Murray and Daniel O Keeffe followed by a late point by Sam Ryan securing victory for Lismore. The final score was Lismore 3-2 Ballygunner 0-0. All attention has now turned to the small ball, with all classes perfecting their skills each morning at wall ball. The finals of our own school league are well underway at present, putting an end to a very successful term. A huge thanks to Mr Prendergast, Mr Smith and Mr Moran for all their time, help and advice.
