1 J a n u a r y 1 6, K rew e o f Harambee Tuesday, 1 2: 0 0 Noon 1 2: 1 3 p.m. Histori cal St art In the Fall of 2000, a group of African Americans came together to discuss how minorities could become more involved in the celebration of Mardi Gras in the spirit of the African American culture in the Shreveport area. This group formed the Krewe of Harambee. Harambee is a Swahili word meaning to pull together. The Krewe of Harambee Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Mardi Gras Parade is held this year on Monday, January 15, This unique parade combines a celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the over-the-top energy of a Mardi Gras parade. Markey W. Pierre was one of the founders of this Krewe. She is the managing partner for the north Louisiana office of Southern Strategy Group. She was a member of the 2003 CABL Leadership Louisiana class, the 2008 chairman of the board for the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce and the 2006 chairman for the Independence Bowl. A native of Princeton, Markey received her B.S. in business administration from LA Tech, her masters in business administration from Nova Southeastern and her Ph.D. in business administration from Walden University. 2 P a g e 2 50 Years of Service! (From left) Eli Golden, Carlton Golden, Rachel Golden, Grady Golden, Susanne Golden, Alan Tipton, Mary Tipton and Ansley Tipton On Tuesday we recognized Grady Golden for 50 years of service to the club. Grady recognized how much Rotary means to him by becoming a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation. At the same time, Grady honored his son Alan Tipton by naming him a Paul Harris Fellow and he elevated son Carlton Golden from PHF +2 to PHF+3. Both Carlton and Alan are members of our club and were sponsored by Grady. Grady, a Byrd graduate, received his B.S. degree from LA Tech. He is currently chairman of the board and vice-president of Builders Supply, after having served as president of the company for 23 years. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association selected him to serve on their board for four years and the executive committee for two years. In 2006, the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce honored Grady as the Business Leader of the Year. He was inducted in the J.A. s Business Hall of Fame in His company Builders Supply was honored as Better Business Bureau s Torch Award for Trust- Performance-Integrity in Builders Supply was selected as the Bossier Chamber of Commerce s 2013 Business of the Year. The Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce named them as the J. Pat Beaird Top Industry of the Year Award in In addition to his Rotary involvement, Grady has served in leadership position on the Committee of One Hundred, First United Methodist Church, Shreveport Bossier Executives Association, American Red Cross, Better Business Bureau, Holiday in Dixie, Home Builders Association and Louisiana Methodist Children s Home. Grady and his wife Susanne have four children: Carlton Golden, Karen G. James, Alan Tipton and David Golden, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
3 P a g e 3 Another 50 Years of Service! (From left) Lawrence Calhoun, Ann Richardson Peters- Calhoun, Donnie Richardson, Shy Richardson Gardner, Gene Richardson, Harryette Richardson and Gene Bryson. Another club member celebrated his 50 years of service by also becoming a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation. Gene Richardson is a second generation member of our club. After his recognition, Gene honored his two sisters Ann Richardson Peters-Calhoun and Shy Richardson Gardner by naming them as Paul Harris Fellows. He also elevated his brother Donnie Richardson to PHF+1. Gene has participated in many civic, business and community service organizations: Plumbing Board City of Shreveport, Air Conditioning Board City of Shreveport, LA Association of Business & Industry, Rutherford House, Norwela Council of Boy Scouts of America, American Red Cross, Mechanical Contractors Association, Committee of One Hundred and many others. He was recognized as Boss of the Year by the American Business Women s Association, 1993 Hall of Honor from Loyola College Prep and the 1995 Bishop s Distinguished Service Award from Catholic Diocese of Shreveport. Gene and his wife Harryette have three children: Amy Richardson Wood residing in Virginia, Allen Richardson residing in Atlanta and Carter Richardson living in Hawaii. In regard to his Rotary involvement, Gene said that his one regret is that he did not attend any Rotary international conventions until 2010 when the convention was in New Orleans. While there, he became acquainted with Disaster Aid USA and he now serves as an Ambassador for them. Gene also holds Rotary s polio eradication dear to his heart as he is a polio survivor having contracted polio in 1947 (age 7). He said that he is very fortunate that he was left with no residual effects. Another claim to fame for Gene is that on March 2, 1992 as he was sitting at the head table at a Rotary meeting he went into cardiac arrest. A cardiologist member of the club (Dr. James Ciaravella) revived him on the stage. The program for that day was rescheduled! For many years, Gene has maintained 100% attendance at Rotary. If he finds that he cannot make a Tuesday lunch, he attends another club meeting.
