2 DEAR CANCER EXPERT, Are you interested in meeting, supporting, and partnering with people who are passionate about the problem of colorectal cancer, and are committed to doing something about it? Then I invite you to consider sponsoring and attending the 4th Annual Southeastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium Conference in beautiful Little Rock, AR on June 19-21, Over the last 3½ years, the Consortium, formed in 2015, has brought together an energetic group of advocates from both the public and private sectors to exchange and compare ideas and experiences related to colorectal cancer and its prevention in the Southeast region of the nation. The delegates, representing 13 Southeastern states, have included advocates, health center and hospital workers, researchers, academics, physicians, nurses, corporate managers, survivors, and government leaders, among others. The Consortium has met three times (Atlanta in 2016, San Juan in 2017, and New Orleans in 2018), has attracted attendees at each meeting, and has vigorously addressed creative ways to increase colorectal cancer screening. Among the numerous issues and specific topics that have been discussed are: multi state messaging and information exchange; ensuring up-to-date knowledge among primary care providers; geographic, racial and ethnic disparities; insurance coverage; patient navigation; state and federal policies; and garnering funding. It has been easy to see the collective passion and commitment of Consortium delegates as they learn from each other and design programs and strategies aimed at increasing colorectal cancer screening rates across the region. During the upcoming conference in Little Rock, the Consortium will focus on approaches to sustain and build upon colorectal cancer screening programs so that a greater segment of the population is reached, and barriers that hamper such efforts are overcome. As before, several questions of central importance will continue to underlie the conference agenda, including: What is happening around the nation and the Southeast with regard to colorectal cancer and its prevention? What data should be collected regarding screening engagement, how can it be gathered, and how can it be harnessed in moving forward? How do we address the uninsured and medically underserved? How should we deal with the emerging problem of increasing colorectal cancer incidences in younger adults? What are the roles of health insurers and large comprehensive medical systems? How do we engage primary care physicians and Gastroenterologists? What is the responsibility of public health professionals? Consortium delegates fully recognize the particular challenges inherent in promoting colorectal cancer screening in the Southeast. The region is characterized by remote locations of large segments of its population, low socioeconomic status, less-than-optimal medical awareness and knowledge, high chronic disease rates, inadequate health insurance, and many other factors that collectively constrain efforts at preventing colorectal cancer. Indeed, according to the United Health Foundation s America s Health Rankings Annual Report for 2018, seven Southeastern states rank among the bottom ten in overall health, and six rank among the bottom ten in cancer death rates. And, as in the rest of the nation, the issue of colorectal cancer in young people (i.e., those under 50 years of age) has become an important issue calling for a deeper understanding of its origin and targeted development of approaches to its remediation. Despite these challenges, Consortium members are steadfast in their determination to increase screening rates in their respective states, and to be a model for other regions across the nation. 3 2019 SYMPOSIUM INFORMATION Who is hosting the 2019 Annual Symposium? The Arkansas Colorectal Cancer Roundtable hosted by the Arkansas Cancer Coalition was established in 2015 to engage public, private, medical and civic organizations in the effort to promote colorectal cancer prevention and early detection. The Arkansas Cancer Coalition (ACC) is a non-profit network of cancer control members and organizatiosn united in order to reduce the human suffering and economic burden from cancer for the citizens of Arkansas. In 2015 a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of American Association for Cancer Research, was focused on the three U.S. hot spots with excessive colorectal cancer death rates, including the Arkansas (Mississippi Delta) (cite). The 80% by 2018 initiative, including partners from the NCCRT and the CDC aided in establishing the Arkansas Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and acted as a catalyst for including CRC screening in the states comprehensive cancer plan. The Roundtable adapted the following objectives to increase colorectal cancer screenings in Arkansas. Objectives: 1. To provide updates on colorectal cancer; attendees will be equipped with accurate and timely information on the most recent cancer trends and cancer control strategies. 2. To establish strategies to increase the use of proven colorectal cancer screening tests among the entire population for whom screening is appropriate. 3. To provide health professionals, professional organizations, policymakers, and the general public with a practical blueprint for increasing the practice of screening for colorectal carcinoma (CRC) and adenomatous polyps over the next decade. 4. To garner support from Arkansas Cancer Coalition partnering organizations and increase population based and system change of programs and practices that support CRC screenings.
