1 Belfast Buildings Trust Ulster Schools Debating Congratulations to Year 14 pupil Dakota Reid Bamford who was one of 6 pupils from NI selected to participate in the Best Individual Speaker Competition held on Friday 27 April in Belfast Harbour Office, Belfast. The motion was This House Believes that it s not the taking part that counts, it s the winning. Dakota found out on the evening that she was debating for the motion. Following the debate Dakota was presented with her runner-up prize and was photographed with Lord Trimble, the competition Patron and Lord Duncan of Springbank, Parliamentary Under- Secretary (Northern Ireland Office and Scotland Office). Issue 47 April 2018 London Marathon Congratulations to Ava Manson who was selected to represent Northern Ireland in the British Road Racing Championships race covering the last 3 miles of the London Marathon route on 22 April Cancer Focus NI Thank you to everyone who contributed to the recent non-uniform day and to the staff who baked or donated for our Bake for Break event. Biology Department News Dr Paul McVeigh, STEM Ambassador from Queen's University took time out of his busy work schedule to discuss the applications of Gel Electrophoresis with our Year 14 Biology students and to give them hands on experience on how to run a gel and subsequently interpret the results.

Special congratulations to Simon, Jay and Jonathan who made it through to the next round with Jay achieving a Merit Certificate at that level. UK Youth Rocketry Competition STEM Club thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the UK Youth Rocketry final held on Friday 27 April. They successfully launched the rocket they have been constructing for the past few months. This included designing the rocket from scratch, researching the parts they needed and building their design. The rocket reached an impressive 430 feet - a very good score for first time contenders! The students showed resilience, determination and teamwork to complete a second launch and the judges were very impressed. Many thanks to Mr Knowles of Denroy Plastics for his sponsorship.
4 50th International Chemistry Olympiad 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad is the leading chemistry competition for the brightest A Level Chemistry students across the UK. We are delighted to that our pupils achieved 2 silver awards - Arwen Greenwood and Drew Watson (Year 14) and 4 bronze awards - Jenny Grant, Miguel Gedtal and Scott Mc Dowell (Year 14) and Dieon Karikunnel (Year 13). Carrickfergus Music Festival The Belfast High School String Quartet (Holly McKinney, Sophie Foreman, Anna Adams and Erin Peel) and the Junior Strings each won their classes. The adjudicator was very impressed with the high standard of string playing displayed by both of these groups. Congratulations also to Isabel Stafford Santana for her cello solo. Erin Peel won the competition for solo stringed instruments as well as the Musgrave Trophy for the most outstanding string performance of the festival. We wish her every success as she goes forward to compete for the Rosebowl (overall prize and a 200 bursary) against other prize winners on Friday 11 May.
5 Ski Instructor For the last 2 years, Year 12 pupil Niamh Wait has been working at Craigavon Ski and Snowsports Centre as a volunteer for Special Olympics Ireland and Skiablity Northern Ireland. This work involves teaching children and adults with special needs snow skiing skills, ranging from introducing complete beginners to the basics of skiing through to racing techniques for more advanced skiers. As a result of this work Niamh, who has also enjoyed success racing with the Ski Club of Northern Ireland, was sponsored by Special Olympics Ireland to gain a ski instructor's qualification. Niamh has now completed this process and has recently qualified as a Level 1 Ski Instructor through Snowsport England. Amy is now working towards her Diploma to Year 10 pupil Ruth Morrow who won the EPTA s Intermediate Competition held in London.
7 Former Pupil Acting Success Jack Boyle, now 23, graduated from QUB with a 2:1 in Drama. He performed as an actor from a young age and from the age of 17 has successfully performed in the Grand Opera House, Belfast Waterfront, The Mac and most recently the Lyric Theatre. After finishing university Jack attended the Lyric Drama Studio to develop his acting training further, leading to his performance as Don Hernando in Helen Edmundson's The Heresy of Love. It was in this role that Jack was spotted by his agent and he now works as a professional actor in NI through Independent Agency. Jack returned to the Lyric in April 2018 to perform in Dr Scroggy's War, directed by Philip Crawford (Head of Creative Learning), playing the French Marshal Joseph Joffre. Jack continues to pursue his professional acting career through theatre, television and film, whilst also taking opportunities to teach and facilitate drama and acting to younger students. There is considerable competition for places on the course with approximately 70 applications each year for 12 places. In the last 7 years 33 young actors have been successful in gaining places to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, RADA, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Lir Academy. Ulster Schools' Individual Table Tennis Championships Congratulations to Jack Norton, Jonathan Beasant, Conor Nugent, Aaron Doulas and Ben Buchanan- Rolleston who competed in the Ulster Schools' Table Tennis Championships held at Lisburn Racquets Club on 18 April. Special congratulations to Conor who won the U16 Individual Championship. Conor won the final by 3 games to nil (11-7, 11-6, 11-8).
8 Ulster Schools Cross Country Success Congratulations to our junior girls team (Taylor Diven, Jana McQuillan, Rebekah Peel, Holly Diamond, Ava Manson and Anna McKeown) who won silver medals at the Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships held on Wednesday 21 February at Mallusk. Special congratulations to Ava who also won silver in the individual junior girls event. Irish Finals were held in Waterford on Saturday 10 March. Hannah Emerson Congratulations to Year 10 pupil Hannah Emerson who has qualified as a Ju jitsu assistant leader. Hannah has also completed her brown belt. She led an introductory lesson to her Year 10 class and all the girls thoroughly enjoyed trying a new sport. England Athletics Indoor Championships Congratulations to Ellie McCartney who won silver in the pole vault in the recent England Athletics U20 Championships held in Sheffield. Ellie's 3.75m vault equalled her personal best and was a new Irish and NI junior record.
