3 October 2017 Message from the Executive Director Welcome October! After a hot, really hot, September, we look forward to a crispness in the air. Bring on the pumpkin spice!!! There is a lot to report: Please note, there will be a resident and family meeting regarding the redevelopment of our long term care beds on October 16, 2017 at 630 pm in the café next to the nursing hub. There are notices around the home for more details. All are welcome. We have a new piece of equipment. Our organization has connected all of the peoplecare homes with a smart TV with a camera so that we can conference with each other without leaving our home. This alone is great but we want to maximize the equipment and plan to use it for Skype, movies and games with the residents. If you would like to assist your loved one to connect to someone through Skype on your own account, you can make an appointment to use the TV. For now, the TV will be available on weekdays when a manager is in the building. We have new faces around the home. While some may be worried about so much change, we want to assure everyone that care and services will only get better with the fresh ideas and rich experience these new team members bring to Golden Years. Jennifer Hastings is excited to join us as the Director of Resident Care. She is brand new to peoplecare and we feel lucky to have her with us. Jeff Willson has joined us the Assistant Director of Resident Care. Jeff has been with peoplecare for several years and looks forward to supporting residents and staff here. Jeff is a kind and caring nurse, and he understands the culture of this organization. We look so forward to Jeff s leadership. Danny Pereira will be joining us a little later this month as an Executive Director in training although I think it is fair to say, I am sure I will learn as much from him as he does from us! Danny will spread his support over the whole home. Please welcome each one of the new team members and know we are all here to serve your needs. Calling all family members! The Family Council is looking for new a chair. Ray Gibb has decided to step down after a successful run and this will leave an opportunity for an interested person to guide the council through an exciting time of Golden Years future. You will not be alone! Both the Social Worker and the Director of Programs are happy to help in any way needed. Ray is happy to field questions and guide a new leader for a successful transition. His is goldenyearsfamilycouncil@gmail.com and he looks forward to meeting new people or rekindling with those already familiar with the home. A reminder to all residents and families that smoking is governed by a few rules and policies. Smoking is only permitted within the smoking area. There should be no smoking within 9 meters of any door and as a courtesy to others, please be aware of open windows. Butts should be disposed in the cans provided within the smoking area. Also, please note that alcohol must be given to the charge nurse to keep in the med cart. No liquor should be left in the resident s room as a safety measure for both them and other residents. Please slow down when driving through the parking lot. We have several residents who enjoy a stroll outside and it could be disastrous for one of them to have to dodge a speedy car that appears out of nowhere. Keep in mind that some residents have diminished hearing and sight and their reflexes and balance are not what they once were. Slow down, please! Finally, I would like to say 86 days until Christmas! We know from past years that many families like to give to staff at this time of year. Why not think about donating a prize-table gift for their staff Christmas party? Our goal is to collect a gift for all that attend the staff party. You can pass it in to any manager with thanks! From our home to yours, happy fall and happy Thanksgiving!! 6 Where Does The Flu Come From? Why Are We Susceptible To Flu Every Year? Influenza is a virus that's spread from person to person. It originates, actually, among birds and other animals such as pigs, and new viral strains of influenza come to this country and to Europe from Southeast Asia. That's the global pattern. Close to home, influenza is a virus that we have in our throats and we transmit to each other when we're in close contact and also when we get the virus on our hands and touch each other and touch our noses and our mouths and that way we can transmit the virus from one person to another. Unlike measles, which comes in only one form, the influenza virus comes in several forms and changes year to year. And that's why each year we're pretty much susceptible to the influenza virus that's going around. That's why we have to get vaccinated against influenza each year in the fall. And that's the best way to protect ourselves against this very serious disease: Getting ourselves vaccinated, and getting everyone in our family vaccinated.
