ADEA Poster Deadline: 9/8/14 Six Flags Great America Tickets An Interview with Dr. Robert Schneider Dr. Robert Schneider, who is retiring after thirty years as a faculty in the Department of Prosthodontics and Hospital Dentistry, talks about his artistic work with glass and his love of motorcycles. When did you begin doing glass art? I started doing stained glass over 30 years ago. The last 7-8 years I became interested in fused glass and have done it as a hobby with art shows and displays around the area. Many examples of my work can be seen on my website at How did you become interested in it? It started with an interest in glass blowing after seeing some of Dale Chihuly s work ( but the equipment was too extensive for a hobby so my wife and I took an evening stained glass course in Cedar Rapids and I was hooked. Philosophically speaking, what do you like about being an artist? I guess the basic connections between being a dental ceramist and working with fused glass are very similar and rewarding. A lot of the same principles of dental ceramics are used in glass fusing, like coefficients of expansion, types of glass, temperature rates of firing and cooling are very critical to an optimal outcome. What types of glass do you work with? Stained glass and fused glass can be of similar types depending on their fusing coefficients. I really like working with dichroic glass and use a lot of it. Dichroic is a really nice type of glass that absorbs one wave length of light and reflects another. It really stands out in both stained and fused projects. Much of the glass jewelry you see today has dichroic glass worked into it to reflect the light and really sparkle. See Dr. Bob Schneider, 3

2 Page 2 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Lynn Schaul The Dows Institute for Dental Research and the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics are pleased to welcome Lynn Schaul. Lynn is an administrative services coordinator who recently accepted the permanent full-time position in Dental Research. Her responsibilities include IRB liaison and coordinator for the college, the Predoctoral Student Research Program administration, data reports, and other additional responsibilities. She previously assisted in dental research, has worked at the University as interdisciplinary graduate programs coordinator, and was the IRB liaison for gynecologic oncology research and also Huntington s Disease research. Lynn enjoys spending time with her cats and American Eskimo dog, playing the guitar, and baking. She and her husband enjoy watching White Sox games and traveling to Maui on vacation. Be sure to say hello to Lynn and welcome her to the College of Dentistry. Calling All Creative Script Writers! We need your help. We need your creativity. And you might want to do something different during the summer break so, here s the plan: Remember the COD Super Bowl commercial? We surely do! It was well received by all our viewing audiences. Do you know why? Because of its wonderful script, created with your peers help. Now, it s your time to dream big and make the College heard and viewed on TV The College of Dentistry is planning to release two new thirty-second commercials in the fall of The purpose of the commercials is to drive the COD brand awareness by promoting Professionalism of our students Quality/cost of care Positive patient relations with the dental students/faculty We need a good script for each commercial. If you have a script-writing bug in you, release it! You ll ask, And is there a reward for it? Yes, there s something you d like: the author or authors of the selected script will get a pizza party for eight. So, get your pen ready and help us make the College of Dentistry even better! For additional information, please contact either Irina Bassis, Dental Administration (irina-bassis@uiowa.edu) or Dr. Michael Kanellis (michael-kanellis@uiowa.edu), Clinic Administration.

3 Page 3 Dr. Bob Schneider continued from 1 Do you create your glass from scratch? I purchase sheets of glass in varying sizes from commercial manufacturers. There are catalogues available or you can look online. There are so many types/colors of glass; it is a difficult decision which one to purchase and how are you going to fuse them for the final result you anticipate. I have had my share of failures when the work didn t come out nearly as planned or cracked when I took it out of the kiln. Do you have any other creative interests for instance, have you ever tried painting or sculpture? I don t paint, but my wife does (and she has done some nice oils but she would like to do more with watercolors.) I don t know if I have the patience for painting, but I would like to do some clay sculpting in the future. Do you have ideas for future glass art projects? I am always working on new ideas. I like to combine glass/metal/wood into some interesting projects. Also, in keeping with my prosthodontic experience, I have been mentally designing a 3-D Posselts envelope of mandibular movement out of fused and stained glass ( I know -- boring prosthodontist, but I like it). I would also like to expand the fused glass into some glass casting projects (melting glass into a mould, kind of like casting a crown but without the centrifuge). My kiln is a pretty good size so I can do some larger projects. Is there a glass artist whose work you admire? For instance, have you been to Murano (Venice, Italy) to see their glass work?) Absolutely, yes, we have been to Murano and have a few pieces at home. Beautiful stuff, I wish I had the skills. I also love Dale Chihuly and his blown glass work. We have been to his shows, and I am totally amazed at what he can do and create with hot glass. Are you still riding your motorcycle? If so, do you have any trips planned? Yes my wife and I ride our motorcycles as time permits. We have four and just converted our Gold Wing to a trike for our longer trips, my wife has her own motorcycle and I have another with a side car because our dog, Shiraz, a chocolate lab mix, loves to ride, also. Additionally, a few years ago my wife brought me an Indian that I only ride sparingly. It is a 2003, the last year the original Indians were made. See Dr. Bob Schneider, 4

4 Page 4 Dr. Bob Schneider continued from 3 (Above): Dr. Bob Schneider s 2003 Indian motorcycle. So, what do you plan on doing with all your free time? My wife and I have lots of hobbies and things we can do. We do plan on participating in more art shows in the Midwest and other places around the country. I will likely also give a few fused glass courses locally as there always seems to be an interest in the techniques. We like to also ride our bicycles and live by the reservoir so there is some very good riding around our area. More motorcycle trips and traveling, I would like to motorcycle around Nova Scotia and across the US and Canada. I will spend a little more time with my parents as they retired to (Above): The Schneiders Suzuki with side car. Arizona a few years ago. There is always something that needs to be done, and I have quite a few lectures scheduled into 2016, I think that should be enough to keep me off the streets at night. (Above): Bob and Mary Ann Schneider in front of the Tree of Shame, composed of motorcycle parts from unfortunate bike accidents on the Tail of the Dragon ride (11 miles with 318 curves) through the Smokies. We wish the best of luck to Dr. Robert Schneider as he and Mary Ann embark on new motorcycle trip adventures and creative endeavors.

5 Page 5 Dr. Pablo Galindo-Moreno Visits the College of Dentistry Dr. Pablo Galindo-Moreno, DDS, PhD, Associate Professor in Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry, from the University of Granada (Spain), visited the College of Dentistry on August 5, Dr. Galindo-Moreno gave a lecture on peri-implant marginal bone loss, which was attended by faculty and residents from the Departments of Periodontics and Prosthodontics. Among other information pertinent to the topic, he presented the results of an interesting publication recently accepted in the Journal of Dental Research ( This is Dr. Galindo-Moreno s third visit to the College since February 2013 when he spent a week in the Department of Periodontics with the support provided by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation through the Charles Finley Visiting Scholar Education Grant. We hope this strong connection with Dr. Pablo Galindo-Moreno and the University of Granada keeps on bringing enriching academic experiences to our College. (Above, left to right): Drs. The College of Dentistry was pleased to host St. Ambrose University Health Careers Adventure Campers for a hands-on activity on Wednesday, July 23. Since 2009, in collaboration with the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), St. Ambrose University has organized an annual summer day camp for middle school age (7th and 8th grade) students, that focuses on health careers. The College of Dentistry has hosted this group five of the six years of its existence. Twenty-four (Above): Group photo of the campers. student campers, along with five program chaperones, were treated to an information/instruction-based presentation by Dr. Julie Holloway, head of Prosthodontics, followed by an opportunity to make impressions on each other in the Operative and Preventive Clinics and pour up the models in the Freshman/Sophomore Support Lab. Prosthodontic graduate students, Drs. Maged Abdelaal, Jorge Garalcoa Pazmino, Ahmed Mahrou, Alessandro Milani, Kan Wongkamhaeng, as well as predoctoral students, Erica Recker, Amy Scallon, Tim Schramm, and David Summers, volunteered their time to give expert guidance and supervision for the activity. Feedback from the camp leaders was very positive: We had a great time visiting the College of Dentistry. It was mentioned on almost every camp evaluation as one of the days they enjoyed the most! Greg Mahaffa s Sister and Family Keep Calm and Carry On Following a Devastating House Fire Greg Mahaffa, Dental Administration, reports that his sister, Sarah, and family (husband, Kevin; children, Aida and Forrest), who have a bluegrass band called Blueberry Hill, were recently performing a free concert in their hometown area of Darrington, Wash. Their concert was to thank emergency responders who had been called to the area in July because of a devastating mud slide in nearby Oso that killed more than 40 people. While they were playing, a friend relayed a mes- (Above, left to right): Forrest, Kevin, Sarah, and Aida Miller. sage to them that their (photo used with permission from Blueberry Hill) house, which was some distance from the mudslide, had caught fire, and everything had been destroyed. Knowing there was nothing the family could do, the Miller family just kept on playing. Sarah plays the bass; Kevin plays the guitar; their daughter, Aida, sings and plays the mandolin; and their son, Forrest, plays the banjo. A friend of theirs, Loren Postma (a.k.a. Uncle Loren) plays the dobro. For those who are interested, the group s web site can be found at:

Doug Litwiller, UI Facilities Management) offers some energy saving tips Tip #1: Check your furnace filter at least monthly. If it appears dirty, replace it. A dirty furnace filter reduces the amount of air the furnace blows around the place, making it work longer to keep your place comfortable and increasing the amount of energy it consumes.
