Double Rainbow Appears Over DSB 2 Dr. Theodoros Katsaros, a new faculty in the Department of Periodontics, was born and raised in Greece; his family still lives in Athens. In 2008, he graduated with his dental degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He served in the army from 2002 until recently and practiced general dentistry in military hospitals and private practice for five years before moving to the U.S. in Dr. Katsaros attended the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, School of Dentistry and graduated this past June with the certificate in periodontics and an MS in dentistry. The College of Dentistry Welcomes Kristal Cookman Recent Publications Houchen Bindery Schedule Jay Shulman: Noon Presentation, Tuesday, September 21, noon-1 pm, Galagan C, DSB Kristal Cookman, Department of Periodontics, is originally from Riverside, Iowa, but she currently resides in North Liberty. Kristal graduated from Kirkwood Community College with a dental assisting degree and practiced for five years before pursuing her dental hygiene degree. She received her AAD in dental hygiene in 2014 and worked in private practice before joining the College of Dentistry staff. In her free time, Kristal enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and friends, and staying active with CrossFit, running and biking. She also enjoys keeping up with Hawkeye athletics. Dr. Steven Levy Receives Extension for NIDCR Grant Award Dr. Steven Levy, Preventive & Community Dentistry, and colleagues at the UI Colleges of Dentistry, Public Health, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have received a one-year extension of their current NIDCR grant award, Fluoride, Dietary, and Other Factors Related to Young Adult Bone Measures and Dental Caries. The award extends the current project until August 31, Dr. Levy is principal investigator. Other research team members include Drs. John Warren (Preventive and Community Dentistry), Karin Weber-Gasparoni (Pediatric Dentistry), Teresa Marshall (Preventive and Community Dentistry), Justine Kolker (Operative Dentistry), Drs. Joseph Cavanaugh (Biostatistics), James Torner, Linda Snetselaar and Trudy Burns (all Epidemiology), Ms. Elena Letuchy (College of Public Health), Dr. Kathy Janz (Liberal Arts), Dr. Punam Saha (College of Engineering), and Dr. Julie Eichenberger-Gilmore (Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center). Current assessments at age 23 include dental caries examinations, bone assessments dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the hip, lumbar spine, and whole body, peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pqct) of the radius and tibia, and multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) of the tibia.

2 Page 2 Alison Schell (D3) and Leah Barshinger (D2) Selected to Attend the 2016 Hinman Student Research Symposium (Above left): Leah Barshinger (D2) and Alison Schell (D3) have been selected to attend the 2016 Hinman Student Research Symposium, which will be held October 28-30, 2016, in Memphis, Tennessee. The symposium s activities will include competitive scientific sessions with awards for the best presentations, as well as a reception. Drs. Raymond Kuthy and Steven Levy Serve on Dental Public Health Review Committee, Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Drs. Raymond Kuthy and Steven Levy, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, have served, or are serving, on the Dental Public Health (DPH) Review Committee, Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). This committee reviews site visit reports and other information about dental public health advanced education programs (AEPs) and makes relevant recommendations to the full commission. Dr. Kuthy recently completed his four-year term; Dr. Levy has begun his term as a commissioner and chairperson of the DPH Review Committee. Is Navigating the Publishing Landscape a Challenge? Join Us! The Taylor & Francis Publishing Panel on September 28, 2016, from 2:00-3:30 pm, in UCC 1117, will focus on teaching you how to prepare your manuscript, select a journal suitable for your publication, and understand aspects of publishing such as the journal publishing cycle, principles of peer review, publication ethics, plagiarism, author s rights and current publishing models. The panel will include: Volker Thomas, a current Taylor & Francis editor; Corey Creekmur, a current Taylor & Francis editorial board member; and Alina Ladyzhensky, a library marketing associate from Taylor & Francis. Miriam Landsman, a current Taylor & Francis editorial board member, will moderate the panel. Water, juice, and pastries will be provided.
