Satheesh Elangovan (Periodontics) and (lower left) Veeratrishul Allareddy (OPRM) gave continuing education talks last month at Sri Ramachandra University (SRU), in Chennai, India. Dr. Elangovan gave a presentation, Bone Regeneration: From Chair Side to Bench, with both clinical and research emphasis and Dr. Allareddy gave a presentation, CBCT of the Oral and Maxillofacial Lesions. Close to 200 residents and faculty members from dental colleges in and around Chennai attended these talks. Sri Ramachandra University is one of the leading dental colleges in India and one of the four colleges that was visited last year by a team from the College of Dentistry (Drs. Dan Caplan chair, Preventive & Community Dentistry; Satish Khera, professor emeritus, Operative Dentistry; Mike Murrell, Family Dentistry; and Veerasathpurush Allareddy, OPRM). The goal of last year s visit to these dental colleges was to explore potential collaborations.

2 Page 2 Research at the College of Dentistry An Interview with Dr. Arwa Owais, Department of Pediatric Dentistry How did you become interested in dentistry? I grew up in a small town in Jordan and lived very close to a community health center where my mother worked as a nurse. I used to go to work with her, to job shadow different health professionals. As a curious child, I used to spend more time at the dental clinic watching people arrive with pain, and leave with the pain relieved. It was a profession that required problem solving, communication skills, hand skills, and passion for others. I liked this multitasked profession that helped people. This is why I became interested in dentistry. I would like to add that I was the first dentist in Jordan who was trained in both pediatric dentistry and dental public health. What is it about your silver nitrate research that interests you? I like to do clinically applicable research and help people (mainly children) in a way that is accessible to ALL people, regardless of their geographical location, ability to pay, and access to dental care. Not only this, but I like the non-invasive and inexpensive approaches. Silver nitrate and silver diamine fluoride were agents that were proposed to help reduce the global burden of the caries. My research addresses the management of caries at different levels. I was amazed when I joined the University of Iowa again in 2013 that my previous mentor, Dr. Michael Kanellis, was still interested in this topic, along with the silver nitrate clinical expertise of my friend and DEO, Dr. Weber-Gasparoni, and other mentors who all encouraged me to pursue this path and make The University of Iowa a U.S. leader in this area. The College and the Department offered me the greatest support and helped me get started with this project. (Above): Teeth after silver nitrate has been applied. How can your research be applied to pediatric dentistry? (Above): Teeth that have received the silver nitrate application. This research will provide preliminary evidence for the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of silver nitrate in the management of caries in children. It is an extra tool that will be available in special circumstances: children in developing countries who have high caries rates and unmet dental needs, with limited access to care; very young children with decay who must wait several months for restorative appointments in the operating room; children awaiting bone marrow transplants who need to have an infectionfree mouth prior to their transplant treatment; and children with limited access to care due to either transportation or financial issues. For those patients with transportation problems, dental professionals may be able to apply silver nitrate in homes or institutional settings and thus reduce the need for patients to travel to dental offices or clinics. The medical management of caries using silver nitrate and silver diamine fluoride may also limit the number of children needing treatment under general anesthesia to stop caries disease. It is worth mentioning that conventional treatment for caries in children under general anesthesia costs around $14,000, while silver nitrate costs around 1/100th of that cost.

3 Page 3 American College of Prosthodontists Releases First Clinical Practice Guidelines for Patients with Dental Restorations The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) has released the first clinical practice guidelines for patients with dental restorations. These guidelines apply to the lifelong care of teeth crowns, bridges or veneers. To develop these guidelines, the ACP led a scientific panel of experts composed by American Dental Association (ADA), the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA), and the ACP. The experts evaluated and debated two comprehensive systemic review findings: Recall Regimen and Maintenance Regimen of Patients with Dental Restorations, Part 1: Tooth-Borne Restorations, and Part 2: Implant-Borne Restorations. The new clinical practice guidelines include the following recommendations: maintain regular dental hygiene practices; patients with restorations should visit their dentists at least every six months for clinical examinations to clean, adjust, repair, or replace their restorations; and patients should be educated how to care for their restorations at home. The clinical practice guidelines as well as the findings of the systematic reviews are being published in the Journal of Prosthodontics through December 31, 2016, and free access to selected research is available. The guidelines and systematic review findings are also being published in Journal of the American Dental Association (Bidra AS, Daubert DM, Garcia LT, et al. JADA. 2016;147[1]:67-74); General Dentistry (Bidra AS, Daubert DM, Garcia LT, et al. Gen Dent Jan-Feb;64(1):14-21); and Journal of Dental Hygiene (Bidra AS, Daubert DM, Garcia LT, et al. J Dent Hyg Feb;90(1):60-9). The Colgate-Palmolive Company awarded an unrestricted educational grant to the ACP Education Foundation. The UI College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics Biorepository has been created to advance oral health research. Interested participants are interviewed and a biological specimen (saliva) will be collected. All data/biological specimens will be coded, de-identified and stored in a locked biorepository lab at the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics (DSB). The specific nature of the research it may be used for will vary but will always related to health research. Patients will receive a $5 gift card or 4 hours of free parking at the DSB. Special Symposium to be Held Monday, July 25, 8-Noon: Patient Engagement: A New Frontier for Clinical Research A special symposium, Patient Engagement: A New Frontier for Clinical Research, will be held July 25 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in MERF The event will be sponsored by the UI Institute for Clinical & Translational Science (ICTS) and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Patient engagement has become an increasingly important aspect (and in some cases a requirement) of research funded by the NIH, PCORI, and private foundations. This half-day symposium will demystify issues surrounding patient-engaged research and will highlight new funding opportunities. The event will feature presentations by national leaders in patient engagement and UI faculty who have experience in conducting engaged research.
